Okay, my fellow schmoes. I know for a fact that if you're anything like me, your room or living area is probably covered, wall to freaking wall with CD's. As with anything else, some of these CD's are well liked, and others are.... well.... less than loved. And, if you're anything like me, there's some CD's lining the far corners of your place that you have no idea what they are.

"I was gonna label it later" and a whole package of blank CD's later you've got dozens of unmarked, unlabeled, and in most cases unloved CD's floating around, in jewel cases that you have no possible origin for, or worst of all, stacks of uncased CD's sitting right in front of you, daring you to listen to them. .

And I'd understand your trepidation in going back through these piles of round plastic mystery. Sure, you may find some hidden gems among them, but on the same token, you may find somethings that only serve to encapsulate your impressionable youth in the form of some truly terrible songs.

This is a risk I'm willing to take. Sitting next to me I have a countless number of old burned CD's. These CD's previously laying in unopposed ruin, forgotten by the changing tides of time.

I shall attempt to rediscover them, to see what's good and what's bad, in an attempt to discover once more the "Hell yeahs!" and "What the Hells" of the past.. I'm spelunking the caves of my youth, and I won't look back.

I urge you people to do the same.

Okay, my first CD. I'm scared.

Song 1

I have no idea what this is. It sounds cool enough....... until the lyrics start God these are awful. The singer has a horrendous voice, its very hard to describe, but I'll give you some idea. Picture William Shatner singing really bad White Zombie style knock off lyrics in the style of a really bad Las Vegas Lounge Singer, now amplify that stupidity by about a million times, and then stick shards of white hot glass through your eyes. That's the only way to truly replicate the pain of hearing this song.

NEXT

Song 2

Nirvana- "You Know You're Right"

Yay! A good song. Cobain is probably, from the little Nirvana I've heard, at his most coherent here. He still slurs his words, but his Boomhauer-esque mouthful of marbles approach to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" isn't really used here. The lyrics, such as they are are quite generic. The chorus is the song title repeated over and over (and over and over and over) again. I can see why this wasn't released on any major studio albums. Its not a very polished song, and its really a little too generic to leave any major lasting impressions. I still liked it though.

Song Three

Theory Of A Deadman- "Nothing Can Come Between Us"

Okay, I'll take it. This isn't the worst Nickelback "inspired" music I've ever heard. I actually kind of like the lyrics here, they're not great, but they're catchy. The actual instrumentation is solid- but nothing really stands out. All in all, a perfectly harmless little song.

Song Four

Saliva- "Always"

Blah. Whatever. Saliva hasn't ever really been one of my favorite bands anyway, and when they play generic metal I don't hate them. But this is too much. If this is what passes for a "ballad" thses days, I weep for the days of "I Remember You".
So yeah, not so good.

Song Five

Black Sabbth- "War Pigs"

Well, two out of five isn't bad. There's two versions of this song floating around on most P2P sites. They're both fantastic. I happen to have the CD version here, the other of course being the Demo version that slowly crept onto P2P servers over the years. No matter how many times I listen to it, I can't deny that its a fantastic song.

Song Six

Neurotica- "Ride Of Your Life"

Well now, if it isn't my old friend Neurotica........

I'm at a point now where I can't figure out for a moment why I actually liked these guys. Their big "hit" here is a terrible song, that just so happens to be pretty catchy. But "catchy" isn't good.

Song Seven

Rob Zombie- "Scum Of The Earth"

Okay, I'll admit it. I'm a big fan of Rob Zombie. Sure his 2001 CD "The Sinister Urge" was far inferior to "Hellbilly Deluxe", but its still got a few catchy little pieces of music. This is one of them. I dig it. Its not the best song in the world, but its far from the worst.

Song Eight

Metallica- "Shortest Straw"

Ugh. I loved this song way back when, now I don't. In retrospect Mettallica at this point in their career were boring. Everything they recorded had this "We need to be long. We need to be EPIC" mentality that clashed horribly with their musical ability. They're solid musicians, but they're not the type that can record a six minute and fourteen second long song and not bore me to tears.

Song Nine

Metallica- "Eye Of The Beholder"

I can't stand this song now. It absolutely reeks of arrogance and pretence that's almost unbearable. Although its shorter than "Shortest Straw" (by a whole second) it still feels too long.

Song Ten

Marilyn Manson- "The Love Song"

I'm not a huge Manson fan now (and never really was, actually) but I totally dig this song. Manson has the lyrical dexterity to handle a song that has him sounding both somber and angry in equal turns. Its pretty catchy too.

Song Eleven

Lim Bizkit- "Rollin."

My ears are bleeding. That's all you need to know..........

Song Twelve

Kelly Osbourne- "Shut Up"

Must. Not. End. Life.

Song Thirteen

Evanesscence- "Their One Big Song"

I used to love this band for one reason. Their lead singer was a hot rocker chick. Yeah, that's it. Nothing else about this band is any better than any of the other better chick-led metal bands out there.

Song Fourteen

Nickelback- "Hero"

Wow.... That damn Spider-Man trailer must have really brainwashed me into thinking this song was any good. I'm not a Nickelback fan, and I'm not a fan of the song either.

Song Fifteen

Thrid Eye Blind- "London"

Brrrrr. I don't know why I like this. I really missed the boat on the two week span back in '98 that 3RDEB were hot, but I like this song. Just don't ask me why.

Song Sixteen

Black Sabbath- "Children Of The Grave"

Yay! The third good song on the CD. Although the White Zombie cover is heavier (and therfore better) I just can't stop loving the original. The riff here never stops, and Ozzy's vocals are spot on. Good deal. :)

Okay, lets see if we can end this on a high note with the last song.

Avril Lavigne- "Sk8er Boii"

Remeber those "what the hell" memories I was speaking of earlier? Yeah. This is one of them. I don't know what I was thinking here. This is pure late 2000 pseudo-punk shit. I hate it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, that turned out very... well.. mixed. I managed to scrounge up three solid songs, a couple decent ones, and several that make me want to burn the CD agan (but in a different way ;))

Overall, I really can't put a solid qualifier on the overall quality of this CD. On the whole I'd say its a very mixed bag.

Here's hoping my next CD is better. :D
