Talk about your latest 'Horror' DVD purchases. Anything from a title that is now available, an up and coming one, or that hard as hell to find ‘Out of Print’ horror DVD---which you finally found in a trade, E-Bay, whatever...

Ok, here’s my 1st entry:

I picked up the following used titles (in excellent condition) from MGM’s Midnight Movies Double-Features collection, from one of my favorite local stores that sells new & used DVD's at very rock bottom prices.

I paid $4.99 each for the following titles:

The Incredible 2 Headed Transplant & The Thing with 2 Heads

Cry of the Banshee & Murders in the Rue Morgue

Voodoo Island & The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake

Plus Takashi Miike's ‘Audition’ uncut SE from Lions Gate for only $4.99 too---very cool!

I finally picked up 'Magic' (1978) on DVD, from Dark Sky Films!

It's about time somebody saved this very underrated classic; Anthony Hopkins is Corky. A poor magician that has no self-confidence and a personality disorder, who ends up bringing a dummy called 'Fats' into his act, now his star is on the rise. Trouble erupts, as Corky seems to fear success and goes into hiding; without giving away too much here---lets just say Corky starts to show cracks in his sanity as he can't seem to function without Fats. Magic is amazing and genuinely scary! Hopkins is brilliant in the role and shows his darker side, which predates his Lector days…A must own DVD!

I just got Dark Sky's new Trilogy of Terror disc.

I've been dying to see this for over thirteen years now, ever since my parents told me about how scared I was of it when I was 2, and I can't believe I finally got to see it. Of course, I watched the sequel when it premiered on USA ten years ago, but this is the one that everyone's parents knows about. It's all about that fucking Zuni doll, man, and I'll be damned if that creepy little fuck doesn't still give me the heeby-jeebies.

I also went to this old video store I used to frequent as a child. Back in the early to late nineties that place had the best horror section around. I used to spend many an afternoon staring at that aisle from a distance, because the video covers were so horrifying I was afraid to go anywhere near them.

Anyways, back to the point... They were selling all of their tapes for about a buck apiece, and I picked up the copy of Demons 2 with the horrific cover art that terrified me at the wee age of 5. I believe this is the exact copy I saw almost fifteen years ago, and I had to have it. Plus, someone stole my DVD copy, so this will have to do as a temporary replacement.

I also bought an old, worn-out copy of Ishtar, but I don't think that's the kind of horror movie you'd want to see. ;)

The Good: Last night I purchased a copy of a little seen 70's horror gem 'Lets Scare Jessica To Death' for $9.99. I have been after this title for along time, so I am one happy schmoe. The Bad: Unfortunately, it was released by those turds at 'Paramount', the transfer is sweet, but this DVD is a bare bones affair---not even a trailer!

Thank God, the DVD was only 9 bucks and change.;)

IMHO the packaging is just too plain .:o I'm a purist when it comes to older films. I want the original theater poster as the box cover art not this new shit ! IMHO the original theater poster is a part of the films identity. How can I wax nostalgic when I look at the box cover when it's got '06 artwork on it! If I didn't know better I'd think it was a new (If you know what I mean) direct to video film and not a horror classic !!

Hey, don’t get me wrong ‘M’---I do understand what you’re saying. Having grown up during the 70’s myself, I was lucky enough to see some of the most classic and memorable ‘Horror & Sci-Fi’ posters. I certainly would prefer the original poster art when it comes to video & DVD. I hate the current trend of “Beautiful People” WB-Scream-stylized shots of the fucking actors! I’d rather go back to the days of seeing the posters that drew you in, the horror posters back then, grabbed you by the throat and didn’t let go. No question!!!!

What I was admiring was the simplicity of the design, because art and design is one of my passions. This seems like the slipcase, not the actual DVD box art…that is not of course this classic image from NOES; I have the original poster as well.

Cool film! Great to see you enjoyed it. I can't wait to watch it maybe later tonight. "Desperation" might just be my favorite book (it's a tossup between that, "It" and "The Talisman") and I'm glad I'm hearing good things about the adaptation.

And I couldn't have possibly thought about a better casting for Collie Entragian.

Feast (WS) (Unrated)

10-18-2006, 04:54 PM
I picked up quite a few for my Halloween horror fest:
Feast
Shaun of the Dead (re-buy)
From Dusk Till Dawn: Collector's Series (re-buy)
The Relic
John Frankenheimer's Prophecy (1979)
Silver Bullet
The last three were from the 4.88 Paramount bin at Wal-Mart.

I really enjoyed Feast and was pleasantly by Prophecy, being that my only memory of it as a child was hairless mutant bears, and was surprised that it was actually a somewhat deep movie. Haven't watched Silver Bullet yet, but there's no way you can go wrong with Garey Busey and werewolves. There's not much to say about The Relic, it is what it is. From Dusk Till Dawn is still one of the best DVDs I've ever seen (even though it's not anamorphic) and the movie is probably the most fun I've ever had watching a genre flick.

And the dead one, it's probably the management at yours are retarted, my Best Buy and Circuit City always have everything I'm looking for (unless it's really, really obscue) and FYE usually has very little, and when they do have something it's price is really jacked up (From Dusk Till Dawn for 12.99 instead of the 7.50 I payed for it)

I purchased 'Feast' for 17.89, decent price considering some stores in my area had it at 19.99. Trust me it wasn't a total blind buy, due to the overwhelming number of postitive reviews. But, what really sold me on it...the script. Once I read it I had to check this crazy shit out! It was great that Clu Gulager's son casted his dad as the Bartender, love this guy. A great charcater actor whom most horror fans remember as Burt in 'Return of the Living Dead'!!!

'Feast' overview:

A High octane, kick ass, blood drenched horror romp
with an inventiveness that Hollywood's "Jump scare" junk can't match!:D ;)

9/10 Hell yeah, its a party time!!!

I have 'The Hitcher' on both formats, funny you brought up HBO showing it. Beacuse I can remember back in the late 70's and 80's they had what I call HBO late night staples. Heres a few: Phantasm, The Hearse, Piranha, Humanoids from the Deep and Ruby.

I had been meaning to buy this one for a long while (since I'm a big huge fan of the series) and with all the conversations I've had about them, I finally did it. I'm psyched that it's the Unrated version.

Recently......

I've been stocking up for a bit of a horror festival that I'm planning on having with a couple friends.

April Fools Day- A pretty clever, if not deep, 80's slasher movie. It isn't great, but it does try to do a few new things within the general format.

My Bloody Valentine- Pretty standard 80's slasher. Not great, but a solid watch.

Friday The 13th Part 3(D)- The best of the bunch. Bonus: my friend has 3D glasses he's bringing for all of us.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2- Not as good as the original, but still damn solid entertainment.

John Carpenter's They Live- Yep. I love it. Its Roddy Piper (who's character goes, as best as I can tell, unamed for the duration of the movie...) fighting aliens who are trying to subliminally take over the world by hypnotizing us through various mass media capacities.

Dracula 2: The Acension- I bought this at a VHS closeout sale at my local movie rental store. I haven't watched it yet. But really, how bad could it be?

Next week I'm buying, John Frankenheimer's Prophecy, The Relic, and the Infinifilm Special Edition of Nightmare On Elm Street. Then I should pretty much be ready.

Anywho, I picked up even more for my marathon of horror:
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2-Disc Ultimate Edition)
Pumpkinhead (the fullscreen MGM release, to tide me over till I find another Region 2 copy or until Sony releases it after the takeover of MGM in widescreen)
Hellraiser
Hellbound: Hellraiser II (funny how it was cheaper to purchase them seperately than get the two-disc set)
Malevolence (blind buy, I was curious and it was used)
2001 Maniacs (see above)
Pitch Black (original DVD release, R-rated version, I don't care for the unrated version)
Horror Express (Christopher Lee, Telly Savalas (sp?), and Peter Cushing in one movie for only a buck? Hell fuckin' yes!)
Dawn of the Dead (2004) (Unrated director's cut for 5 bucks)
Ginger Snaps (re-buy)
Land of the Dead (Unrated director's cut) (re-buy)
EDIT: Forget that I picked up Cemetary Man (a.k.a. Dellamorte Dellamore). Fuckin' classic movie.

Your post got me to thinking X---There is this very cool little mom & pop outfit around my way called 'Postively Records'. They deal in selling and buying new & used DVD's, and let me tell you this place is a freaking godsend.

I have found so many new & hard to find titles at this place, and were talking rock bottom prices as low as 3.99 to 4.99. So, If I ever come across 'Hell on Earth' I'll contact you by PM. I can ask the guy who runs the place (he knows me) to hold it and would be more then willing to pick it up for you....IF you're into the idea let me know. :D ;)

Hey no prob' X, you're right...forgot about Amazon there for a sec, but I am always glad to help out, so the offer always stands. This place I am refering to has helped me find so many titles on the cheap, lets say a new title hits your local 'Best Buy' for we'll say for around $19.99.

By the following week it ends up at 'Postively Records' for $5.99, some new, some used, but in excellent shape as the owner inspects every DVD that comes through his shop. I have seen this guy turn down buying anything that looks real beat up. The way I see it why buy a DVD for $20 bucks, when I can get it for $5 and change... ;)

Good notion. I love when rare and obscure movies come through Gamestop that aren't in their system (as they charge a standard $5.99 flat rate for DVDs not in their system) or when it's a better or out of print edition of a movie, but because of the standard pricing, they charge the same for each edition, regardless of the movie. For example: the copy of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - 2-Disc Ultimate Edition I got was at Gamestop, for the same price ($9.99) as the single disc "meat packing" edition. God I love company shortcomings.

I'll be sure to let you know if I ever get frustrated trying to find a movie, as I like to use Amazon as little as possible (I got a defective copy of The Rock: Criterion Collection there once and a scratched up copy of First Blood, so it's kind of turned me off of buying from the used section too much. Also, my copy of Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight has yet to arrive, after waiting weeks after ordering it...) and special ordering at MSRP can get expensive.:p

A recnt one I picked up looks to be a limited editon version of Dark Waters (1994). Comes in an oversized box with a little stone tablet or something. as well as Haven't opened it yet too busy watching other things. It's not Dark Water the original J-horror (2002) or remake with Jennifer Connelly(2005). Anyone know much about this movie? Any good or a bad blind buy?

Dead of Night (1945)
A classic horror film...creepy!

Phantom of the Opera (1943)
Claude Rains turns in one of his best performances as the mild mannered, tragic Eric Claudin, a violinist in the Paris Opera. Rains really makes us take pity for Claudin. This is not just another Universal horror picture Claudin's Phantom brings a sense of humanity, the fact he is the common man pushed to the edge.

April Fools Day (1986) a cult favorite around here...

The Vampire Collection: El Vampiro (1957) & El Ataud Del Vampiro aka The Vampires Coffin (1958)

For Mexican Horror Buffs...like ME!
The quality of these DVD's is a vast improvement over the old public domaine bootlegs.

DVD Features:
Available Subtitles: Spanish
Available Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 1.0)
Remastered from original vault elements
Commentary by historian Robert Cotter
Photo Essay
DVD-ROM: Complete 1976 French photo-novel of "The Vampire's Coffin"
U.S. radio spots
Abel Salazar's 1995 obituary from The Boston Globe
Still and poster gallery
Cast bios
Exclusive collectible card

Original uncut Spanish version & K. Gordon Murray's english Dubbed...check out the films in their original language with subs. Mexi-horror buffs will finally get to see both films in the original Spanish. Which I highly recommend!

And just to be the completest a-hole, I picked up

Friday the 13th Part 2
Friday the 13th Part 3
fan fave entries...

Friday the 13th Part 7
Friday the 13th Part 8
The weaker entries...

Of course the usual Paradung bare bones ones...but at 4 bucks a pop what the hell...

Must have DVD's all! :D

The energy that Leif put into his production is amazing for a film shot on super 8, it has the look and feel of the original Texas Chainsaw and Evil Dead. Plus, there are two cuts of Darkness on the 2-disc DVD. The new cut called The Vampire version on disc 1 and the original cut on disc 2 and its FREAKING PACKED with very COOL extras.

I haven't even gotten the time to review it yet. Won't be able to until later on this week. This is just a fan made dvd. The guy found a whole lot of rare and promotional stuff and put it all on one dvd. I don't even think the movie is on there, just extras. I remember seeing that making of NIGHTMARE 4 when it first aired on tv back in '88. I remember thinking how cool it was that they were showing you how they did the special effects and was kinda agitated that New Line didn't put it in their box set. I'm really looking forward to checking all this forgotten footage out and I'll let you know what I thought after doing so. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Hey guys surprise surprise I need your help! I've spent the last two hours trying to find my answers online but to no motherfucking avail! The first person to help with the correct info will be a legend in my eyes forever!

One site says the R2 and R1 version of HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME are UNCUT. However, I read somewhere that the R2 version is CUT, so I cancelled my order. If the R1 version is definately UNCUT, that's good enough for me.

The same goes for the R1 version of HE KNOWS YOU'RE ALONE. I'm certain it's UNCUT but can somebody confirm this?

I've just ordered the R1 version of THE PROWLER. This one's UNCUT isn't it? I'm sure it is.

I've gotten sick of waiting so I've also ordered the R1
THE FUNHOUSE. This is UNCUT too right?!

Any help would be awesome. You wouldn't fucking believe how hard it is just to find out if a fucking film is Cut or Uncut! Actually, you're horror fans too, so maybe you would!

teenkiller
05-20-2007, 02:27 PM
Well I own The Prowler and The Funhouse dvds so I just checked the back:

The back of The Prowler boasts "...rarely-seen sleeper from the golden age of slasher films- now presented COMPLETELY UNCUT AND UNCENSORED!

The back of The Funhouse doesn't say any such thing. All I could find is that it is rated R.

On another noted I just added Basket Case 2 to my collection and a FRIDAY the 13th Megadisc which boasts features similar to that on the NIGHTMARE disc I bought two days ago.

Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

!MorganOnyx!

Just arrived after very nearly 5 weeks of waiting! If I order a R1 from Play, it arrives within 5 days because the stock is already at the UK depo. This shit place said they take 3-5 days! My fucking ass! 3-5 days for an email to confirm I've ordered the fucking thing! It was about 2 weeks before they even despatched it, and a further 3 for it to arrive all the way from the USA! Fuck that shit for a game of soldiers! :(

I think I am going to have to run out today and pick up a copy of Monster Squad. I have been waiting for that one for far too long to not grab it.

I've read a bit about the DVD's extras and I hope they turn out good. I know it has a making of (five-part?) documentary. Sometimes those turn out great, other times, not so much. I believe I also read that it has recent interviews with the cast and crew. Seeing the kids, now roughly 30-years-of-age should be interesting.

It was actually new and sealed. I had it brought to me from the UK, and it looks like it's the only version they've got. The HMV store employees, I was told, haven't heard of a an 8th disc, and they tried to sell FVJ as the the "8th installment". Ignorant bastards

Yeah that's the one! Bastards told me it would take 3-5 days. There was no information on the site that explained R1's would take 5 fucking weeks! It's a UK based R1 site! You would think they would have them in stock!

Anyway, the film was pretty decent. It wasn't as scary as what I had hoped and the "doll scene" was a tad disappointing (the room was overly lit - it should've been quite dark), but it was another slice of uncompromising slasher pie from the main man. Loved the twist at the end, I didn't really see it coming. I had an inkling but that was all. :D

Speaking of the 'Monster Squad' DVD, Lions Gate really dropped the ball! Why? No Promos! No effort to do any kind of marketing campaign. After speaking to someone closely involved in the video biz, I was informed that the problem was due to a lack of awareness. THATS WHY YOU HAVE A MARKETING DEPARTMENT LIONS DUNG---TO BRING AWARENESS!

It is really hard to obtain a copy anywhere in N.E. Pa.

The Suncoast Pictures at my local mall sold out in less then 3 hours. I was told by the manager that 'Lions Gate' did a low print run...the manager said the his store had 4 copies.

Yeah. I went to the FYE in Franklin Mills Mall to pick it up and there were no copies. I went to the mall again today and dropped by FYE and they actually had one copy left so I quickly snagged it. Considering all the great features on it $14.99 was not a bad price. Hopefully sales will do well to convince them to obtain the rights to Night of the Creeps. Another film that is sorely lacking the dvd treatment. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Hey Killer,

I went to the FYE across the mall from Suncoast and it was the same story, sold out. Pretty Screwy shit of you ask me, I STILL don't understand what the deal was with LG. As far as 'Night of the Creeps' goes, I hope that a company like Dark Sky or Anchor Bay get to distribute it.

But, I still think this whole thing stinks here regarding how LG handled the release of 'Monster Squad'. With the right kind of push they really could have sold this DVD. imho~

You have a PM.

Not to say Walmart is cool or anything. But the one near me has about a dozen copies sitting on the shelf. The price is $14.99. WHich isnt that bad. The DVD store in my area has a few copies for $20 a pop.

SamSanchez

I think the low quantities is more of a TransWorld (FYE, Suncoast, Sam Goody, etc...) thing. When I used to manage an FYE, of all new releases, we used to get about 2-3 of older or lesser known new releases. 1 (if not 0) for very obscure releases, about 8 for bigger releases that weren't THAT popular, and like 20+ for stuff like 300.

Kind of like when I worked there, we only got one copy each of Constant Gardener and History of Violence which aren't exactly very obscure.

Ok, I have a dorky complaint.

I just bought return of the living dead special edition and the back of the box reads...

"On his first day on the job at an army surplus store , poor Freddy unwittingly releases nerve gas from a secret U.S. military canister,"

Um, it was a medical supply store . The sign is even in the first scene of the movie! The store was full of skeletons and prosthetics and cut in half dogs, How can they get this wrong???

I know it's not a big deal but come on dvd people, DUH!

Recently (as in, within the last month or so), I've picked up...

I Drink Your Blood - Pretty damned cool 70's flick.

Lair of the White Worm - Not really 100% on this, but I'm fairly positive this movie sucks.

Cannibal Ferox - Stupid entertainment, rip off of the far superior Cannibal Holocaust. Very entertaining, though.

Four of the Apocalypse - Excellent western from Lucio Fulci. Really, truly a great film, possibly the most well-directed of Fulci's career.

Rabid Grannies - A total bore, and I had always heard this one was good... apparently the Region 1 DVD is almost totally devoid of any gore... which is a pretty essential component of motion pictures with titles such as Rabid Grannies.

Scarecrows - Great, atmospheric horror film.

Of Unknown Origin - Decent early-80's man v.s. giant rat flick. I'd like it better were it not for the last 60 seconds...

They Came Back - Apparently a French zombie movie, I'd never heard of it and it's still not been watched. Anyone seen it?

Lifeforce - Started out well enough, then proceeded to get stupider and stupider. Tobe Hooper is wildly inconsistent.

Class of 1984 - Exceptional, with a typically great performance from Roddy McDowall.

Body Snatchers - Solid horror effort from one of my favorite directors, Abel Ferrara.

The Beast Within - Lame and uninvolving. Philippe Mora is sorely lacking as a director. Mad Dog Morgan ain't bad, though.

Contraband - Yet another Fulci effort, this one a gangster pic obviously influenced by The French Connection. Fulci exercising his love for extreme violence in an action setting. So-so.

Dagon - Stuart Gordon is one of the most talented presences in the horror genre these days, and Dagon is pretty cool, but it is flawed... some truly pitiful CGI effects cripple certain key scenes. Not nearly as good as Gordon's earlier...

Castle Freak - Fantastic; grim and dark, with strong acting and a menacing atmosphere.

The Baby - One of the strangest American movies I've ever come across. Man in his late 20's raised in a state of permanent infancy by his domineering mother. Bizarre, but compelling. Directed by Ted Post, who went on to helm Magnum Force.

Effects - Very cool effort from Pittsburgh filmmaker Dusty Nelson, who had ties to the Romero scene from that neck of the woods. Many of Romero's friends and standard crew were involved with the making of Effects, most notably Tom Savini (who plays a villain), Joe Pilato (who plays the hero, a very different role than his Capt. Rhodes in Day of the Dead), and John Harrison (who plays THE villain, in a pretty effective role, and composed the much-maligned score for Day of the Dead, and for Creepshow). Highly reccomended, anyone out there seen this one?

Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies - Kind of a horror movie...

Odd, I find Best Buy here, to be a great place for Horror.

I went to Wal-Mart for something to do, and grabbed...

MoH - The Washingtonians
MoH - Sound Like
Shaun Of The Dead
Severance

Considering I was only planning on getting maybe one DVD... I did pretty well. :D

From Walmart last week:

Death Proof
HalloweeN 2/HalloweeN 3
Return of the Living Dead SE
The Fog(Carpenter version, obviously)
Rosemary's Baby
And a triple feature: April Fools Day, Tales from the Darkside: The Movie, and Stephen King's Graveyard Shift.

then a bit of background info. OK, so for four years I worked at a local Hollywood Video. Now, less than 4 years later, the new management has driven that same store into bankrupcy.

When I worked there, DVD was a new format, and we were a 'test store'. Meaning that because dvds were only about 15% of our inventory, and generated over 65% of our business, the company decided to invest and sent us close to 2,000 older titles on DVD. This trend continued, making that store one of the best in the 3 state area for finding older titles on DVD.

So I hit up their going out of business sale, and for cheap, I snagged:

Beyond Re Animator
Eaten Alive (Tobe Hooper)
C.H.U.D,
Near Dark
Rabid
Dead Man's Shoes
Lord of Illusions
Child's Play 2, 3, Bride and Seed of Chucky
Christine
Children of the Corn
Pumpkinhead
Candyman
Silence of the Lambs

Paradise lost...it was really average and quite boring, if it wasnt for the exciting half an hour or so near the end it would have been a waste of money. I just didnt care who got the chop and who lived.

Charmed while not horror its a horror/sci fi/soap show lol i love it!
