Whick one do you favor?
I'd say the latter. I love it. John Hughes should make more films.
Although that shot of Phoebe Cates coming up from the pool and loosing the bra was a great scene.

Definitely The Breakfast Club. Funny, intelligent, the ultimate teen film.

I agree, all that Fast Times At Ridgemont High did was mostly focus on sex. Breakfast Club did everything teens deal with.

Anybody who only focuses on the sexual aspects of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, or the Spicolli stuff, is really missing the boat. The whole subplot about JJ Leigh's character and her pregnancy was quite well handled. The scene where her brother Brad (the great Judge Reinhold), picks her up after her abortion, and acts like a brother should, is one of my favorite scenes in 80's cinema.

I went to high school in the early 80's, and it was a damned sight more like this movie than anything John Hughes ever put on screen. If you went to either the Treacle Academy or Convenient Plot Resolution High, I think Hughes might speak to you more than he does me...

Mr. Hand (from Fast Times at Ridgemont High): "What are you people? On DOPE?!?"

The Breakfast Club takes it I'm afraid!

As far as teachers go, I'll take Mr. Hand (the late, great Ray Walston) in RIDGEMONT HIGH over Paul Gleason's BREAKFAST CLUB asshole disciplinarian anyday!

The Breakfast Club totally. I'll take the rat pack over sean penn and jj leigh any day

The Breakfast Club by a landslide. By the way, it's Brat Pack not Rat Pack. The Rat Pack was Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. Dean Martin etc.

I love the characters in the Breakfast Club, much more than the lack of character in Fast Times (except for Spicolli).

Spicoli and MR. Hand win by a mud slide!

Brat Pack be damned. FAST TIMES is the more memorable film.

Two completely different types of movies though, not the most fair comparison.

Both classics, but my favorite has to be The Breakfast Club.

Which reminds me...I had detention a week ago, and as I was sitting there with others I couldn't help but think of The Breakfast Club. I was waiting for someone to jump on the desk and start dancing. But it never happened! hehehe

Lindsey, if you don't mind my asking, what were you in for? I hope this isn't a "regular thing" with you. :p

As for the films, it's a tough call. Fast Times was a more immediately entertaining movie in some respects (it has Phobe Cate's breasts!). Yet, Breakfast Club is overall a better-rounded film. In the end, my vote would have to go to:

THE BREAKFAST CLUB

THE BREAKFAST CLUB

Actually, this was my first time. I usually get out of them by lying my ass off, but it didn't work this time!

I threw a paper towel at my science teacher when he wasn't looking! oops! That wasn't very smart. :p

So your science teacher must have been a real prick or something? One time (eighth grade I think) I actually told a teacher's aide to "shut up," and there was no way that lying about it could have saved me. :o It was just one of many, many detentions I got during junior high (and we won't even talk about my in-school suspension). Just be glad you didn't have my 10th grade English teacher. The man was a complete asshole! (And was possibly inflicted with some sort of nervous disorder.)

Back on topic: has anyone here actually watched these two films back-to-back? I just rented Fast Times recently, while I haven't seen Breakfast Club in five years. Still, I think that the latter will hold up marginally better. It just needed more hot girls or something. Yet, FT had Sean Penn in it. That's automatically a plus.

Maybe this is one of these matches that really can't be won by either party, like "Robert DeNiro or Al Pacino?"

I came in here to vote for Breakfast Club. But after seeing the lack of love for the 80's classic Fast Times, I'm hereby switching my vote.

Buck said it best. Fast Times was deeper than you guys are giving it credit for.

Mr. Hand: Am I hallucinating here? Just what in the hell do you think you're doing?
Jeff Spicoli: Learning about Cuba, and having some food.

The Breakfast Club!

With so many quotable lines, one very simple moment may be the funniest to me...

John Bender is crawling along the ceiling vents telling his joke (blone walks into a bar with a poodle....) he then proceeds to fall to the ground...walks over to the other kids all with shocked faces and says....

"I forgot my pencil"

I crack up every damn time!!!

"What was that ruckus? what ruckus? I was just in my office and I head a ruckus! could you describe the ruckus sir?"

Fast Time here, and I agree with everything Buck said, well besides going to high school in the 80's... didn't do that. :)

I am a stickler for realism and marijuana fueled mishaps, but my heart belongs to the misfits of the breakfast club.

The Brain (Brian, my imaginary high school sweetie, smart, cute, and has a great stoned voice)

The Jock (Andy, isn't he a bit short for a jock, though?)

The Princess (Claire, lipstick application queen)

The Criminal (Bender baby)

The Basket Case (Allison, although she looked just fine without that terrible headband)

They crammed so much into one film, that has only one location, a giant high school.

Plus, Judd Nelson was cool in this one. Unlike the yuppie he played in ST. ELMO'S FIRE.

all good characters but TBC just seems more like a case study of high school kids instead of a comedy. i just think for laugh out loud situations FT is better.

I liked both movies in IMO...... Breakfast Club centered on 5 teens at the library where Fast Times tells the tales of teens growing up in high school. Though Fast Times has Phoebe's U know whats,Jennifer practing sex tips during lunch time & those Pat Benatar wannabe girls I do have to go with the majority of the replies and saaay Breakfast Club.

Although I liked both, I think I liked Fast times at Ridgemont High just a little bit more.

BREAKFAST CLUB's comedy is more bittersweet, not as blatant as FAST TIME'S. By all means, FAST TIMES is more laugh out loud funny.

Some part of me just wants to do cartwheels and compulsively lie about my sex life.

But JJ Leigh's exploration of sex is very poignant and true to life.

I'll say it again: Fast Times At Ridgemont High is not in the same vein as Animal House.

It stands perfectly alongside Cameron Crowe's other poignant serio-comic scripts, like Say Anyhting, Singles and Almost Famous.
