I love movies and the experience of watching these films at the theatre. Unlike most people, I am lucky and was employed at a theatre and am able to go and see films for free. However, the typical family is paying a good $30-$40 bucks to go watch a movie on a weekend. This is ridiculous. As a movie lover, I want the movie experience to be available for all families, and not be an experience that has to be only one weekend a month due to the extreme costs. Lower the costs and you will find that there are people out there wanting to go to movies and in the end, the profit will be increased anyways.
Movies are made to satisfy the public, but half the public must wait for the movie to come to dvd to rent. We need to really make it for the public and make movie cinemas cost affordable so families can enjoy movies at the cinema more often.

rising ticket prices are the main reason i dont see that many films at the cinema...if they lowered them i would go and see a hell of a lot more films instead of only those that i cannot miss on a huge screen

exactly, it's ridiculous... the big screen is something that everyone should be able to enjoy all the time.. going to the movies hurts the wallet as bad almost as bad as a ball game (if you get cheap seats) and that is unacceptable... too many families miss out on the experience of enjoying a good movie together because of it.. pisses me off

I have to drive 55 miles one way to the nearest theater that is worth watching a film in, so for me to go to a movie alone is astronomical, thus I don't do it much. By the time gas and tickets get paid for, any film I could've seen has cost far more than the DVD would be to purchase. Still and all, I'll pay the high cost to be able to see the movies I want to. I just wish there were more movies I wanted to see out there.

It is a shame that rising ticket prices are keeping families away from the theater. But there are matinees with cheaper ticket prices and what not - not by much, but hey - take what you can get.
Though it's not like there are THAT many family friendly movies out there - unless you count the million and one CGI movies with animals in them.

Depending upon your area some theater chains and venues charge for ticket prices differently. Like BigRed has touched on there are places that charge only a dollar per person but hate to say its gonna be 2nd/3rd Run flicks. So don't be picky now.
I myself do MATINEES! Hell No will I pay $9.75 + But if I find myself doin that I would be sooooooo much a rarity. And lastly, plan and limit when its MOVIE time for the family. It's not like ya have to fullfill goin each day/each week now.
And now and then movie time event is good to do.

I totally agree!
I am fortunate enough to work for a partner of Universal Studios and we get discounts at Universal Cineplex. However, our discount started out at $5! And now they have been raising and raising the prices. Now it's $6.50! Unfair! there's not even that much of a difference in the discounted price then the regular price.
I also believe that if the prices were lower, more people would go. They would still get a profit on food and drinks. Why don't theatres get that? Especially the competition with NetFlix right now. Why would people pay all that money at the theatre, when they can get all the movies they want for a monthly price at home?

I like go to the cinemas. But I rather watch a dvd at home with my own home theater system with my 60"widescreen. Lets say I take my wife and son too a movie on a Sunday afternoon. @ adults is like $5.50 and 1 child is $5.25 so thats $16.25. I get 1 large drink around $4.00 and one small drink for 3.00 and a medium popcorn for another $3.50.....for a grand total of $26.75..average or I could rent from Netflix and grab a cold drink from the fridge and invite 10 people over to watch a dvd..or buy a dvd for $15.00 still cheaper.
For the price of the tickets , they should give us free drinks and popcorn. I know the cinemas get a percentage but come on. Give us a break on something. I agree the lower the prices the more people will go to the movies.
Sure these big cinemas thats out these days put the drive-ins and other small cinemas out of business. But do you think these Cinemas are going to last themselves? Home techology is getting better. Maybe 10 years ago, who would think of us sitting in our own home with a big widescreen tv with amazing sound around the room. Pushing a button to pause the dvd to go to the bathroom and get a bite the eat.
You are going to see alot of neat things in the future. Dvds are starting to change already. I know the new HD-DVDs are about $25.00 /$10.. more than the regular dvds but the price will drop as the years go by. The HD-dvd players are $350.00-400.00. I am not ready for that yet.

Considering all of the shitty films that come out watching the occasional good movie is totally worth the cost. I mean, who wants to pay $8 to see Little Man? But The Departed, on the otherhand...

The cost of movies is definitely gettnig out of control. And it is not just the ticket prices it's the concessions as well. You pay $4 for a drink you could get at your local fast food place or convienence store for $2 or less. And the food is just as redicuously overpriced. I do understand that the theatres make the bulk of their profits form concessions but I think that $4 soda could be easily lowered to $2.50 and the theatre would make a nice profit.
As for ticket prices $8-10 is insane. I personally only go to matinees to avoid the overpriced night and weekend tickets. For a family with 2-3 kids this is a expensive evening. What I would like to see happen is lower concession and ticket prices across the board. I do not think a movie ticket should cost anymore that $5 and a family of four should be able to see a movie with refreshments for $30 or less. I know there is no chance in hell this will happen but it would definetly encourage more people to go to the movies.

The theatres where I'm currently living are cheaper than anywhere else I've ever seen. Any show before 6 pm is only $5.25. After 6 pm, the price goes up to, I think, $7.50. Granted $7.50 is still a bit steep, but it's significantly cheaper than anywhere else.
I'll probably be moving to Orange County soon, so I'm about to enter a realm of EXTREMELY STEEP ticket prices (the cheapest one is about $8.75).

Unfortuneately you don't know whether it's good or not until after you pay the $8.

Landmark has great prices and they show pretty good quality flicks. Plus, they don't card which I find very respectful. As for the mainstream theaters, they're annoying. On top of the overpriced tickets and overpriced food, they show commercials in front of the trailers and feature. Gosh, we should haven't to watch commercials if we paid to see the movie. There's no excuse for it. And they wonder why people download...
