View Full Version : The best movies that no one has heard of

I try to explain to my friend's the reason why some people these days, mostly teenagers, have never heard of the great movies is because they werent alive to see them advertised on tv. And if they didn't come out in their lifetime, they arent good movies.
Great movies that no one has heard of, (or at least the people around me havent heard of):
Donnie Darko- Nobody I have come in contact with has EVER heard of this movie.
Deliverance- a bunch of friends and I were watching Pulp Fiction and the rape scene came on and I was trying to explain to everybody how the director based that on a scene from Deliverance. "Deliverance? What the fuck is that?" is the reponse I got.
Mean Streets- Before Goodfellas there was Mean Streets.
Taxi Driver- My friend: "You lookin' at me?" Me: No, asshole, its "You talkin' to me?" My friend: Whatever. [/b]Me:[/b] You know what movie that line comes from? My friend: I dunno, some mafia movie.
The French Connection- Oh no, the movie didn't just win best fuckin' picture for no reason at all.
Raging Bull- "Yeah, I think my dad knows that movie."
The Evil Dead- "What the fuck is the Evil Dead? What a gay-ass title".-- "It was a horror movie made back in the early 80's"--"Well, it sounds gay"--"The same guy who directed Spider-Man directed it"-- "Spider-Man kicked ass"
A Clockwork Orange- "That's the one where all the girl's get raped, right?"
Dawn Of The Dead- "Nope never heard of it"--"Have you heard of Night Of Living Dead"--"Yeah"--"Well, this was a sequal to that movie"--"I didn't see Night Of The Living Dead either."
Reservoir Dogs (yes, I do mean this)- "What is the fuck is that?"--"It's just one of the greatest movies ever made. Please tell me you know who Quintin Tarantino is."--"Nope never heard of him either"
I don't expect everyone to be a movie buff, but Jesus Christ, these are some of greatest fuckin' movies ever made.

ive had to whore some flicks out to people.
taxi driver, dawn&day of the dead were the main three.the original house on haunted hill is another one.everyone has seen the remake.when you mention that theres an older hohh they look at you like youre fuckin nuts.bloody shame.
The Dark Backward
I note that this film didn't receive any kind of acclaim but I think it is truly one of the most original dark comedies ever made. Just to see Judd Nelson and Bill Paxton being TOTALLY whacked is worth the watch.
What ever did happen to Adam Rifkin?

I dunno dude, I think people have heard of most of those movies, with the possible exceptions of Donnie Darko and Dawn of the Dead.

Apartmant Zero. It's a genuinely creepy mystery set in Buenos Aires, starring two talented, underrated actors, Hart Bochner and Colin (I get to play the Token British Jerkoff in half my movies) Firth.

I had the same problem with my friends in college once, my friend let me borrow his The Evil Dead video (yes he knows Evil Dead http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif. It was the first one) and the front cover had a drawing of Ash's possessed sister (I know her name but I can't spell it - honest) and she was green on it, probably to set the mood on the video. I was looking at it and the girl sitting next to me said "Whats that?" I turned round and faced her, and said: "Whats Evil Dead?" she nodded. Took the video from my hands and looked at it.
She saw the front cover and said: "Is that the evil dead?" I responded: "No! The evil dead is a spirit that possess the living..." I told her the plot and she couldn't get it still.
I was actually alive when Evil Dead 2 came out but I was only 2 ( http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif).

FINDING GRACELAND is the one unknown gem I find myself trying to get people to check out whenever I can.
Basic plot: a recent widower (Johnathan Schaech) heads out on a road trip to Memphis. On the way, he picks up a hitchhiker (Harvey Keitel) who firmly believes that he's none other than Elvis Presley in the flesh. The film is about their interactions and encounters with others on the road, including a Marilyn Monroe impersonator (Bridget Fonda), while the anniversary of "Elvis' death" approaches.
It's a sweet, brilliantly-acted, and nicely-written little drama.

I had somebody come over to my house to borrow a DVD to show to some kids at their school, he comes over and looks at my DVD collection (which is almost all 18 or 15) and he is like "Tombstone, what's that about?" and I'm like "you never heard of Tombstone? It's only the best western ever" so he goes "ok, what's this?" holds up The Shawshank Redemption, "that's The Shawshank Redemption" I say, he says "any good?" so I decline to answer that question. Then he looks at First Blood he asks "this sounds just like Rambo" anyway he took my copy of The Iron Giant (which I got free ok?!) and left to a hail of my verbal abuse!!

Has anyone ever heard of a Canadian movie called Treed Murray? I saw it recently and it was excellent. It's about a guy who is chased up a tree by a gang of muggers. The entire film takes place at this one tree. It's brilliant; check it out.

George Romero's Knightriders. 1981 With Ed Harris. Fun movie about traveling renaissance show, but they ride motorcycles instead of horses. Not as stupid as it sounds.

I saw this one back in May. Not a bad film, with a great Ed Harris performance, but at 2 1/2 hours, the story definitely started showing some wear and tear in some parts.

Most of the people I work are about as movie literate as your average house brick. I went into work last monday and upon being asked what I did at the weekend I replied that I had gone to the cinema to see Reign Of Fire. Cue blank expressions. Bearing in mind this particular fact you can imagine how blank those expressions then were when I said I had also watched Battle Royale and Dancer In The Dark on DVD. How blank were the expressions? The blankest blank. If a movie doesn't star actors of a certain calibre then it's totally off the radar for these people. Maybe i'm being overly cynical but it seems to me that 9/10 average joes won't even consider watching a movie with subtitles. If it has subtitles, well damn, it's just gotta be one of those arthouse flicks we all heard about. If we can't understand Memento then how the hell are we gonna undertand one of them artsy fartsy flicks? Sometimes I just wanna grab some people and shake them out of their self induced torpor. Rant over!!!!

I've heard Serpico referenced I don't know HOW many times in cop movies and TV shows, and I'll bet nobody has any clue it was a fantastic Pacino movie. I remember when it was announced that Tom Hanks was the first one to win back-to-back Best Actor Oscars since Spencer Tracy and nobody I knew had any clue who Tracy was.

A couple of really fine films. Let Him Have It is especially amazing. A great performance (one of the best of his marvelous career) from Tom Courtenay and a fabulous early performance from Christopher Eccleston. (Every time I see him, I see him in my mind, bellowing indignantly at Geoffrey Rush "I am Norfolk!" and Rush calmly replying "You were Norfolk. The dead have no titles." from Elizabeth. Damn, I love that scene...)

"Third prize is 'Fuck You!'" I just love that line...
Nice topic.
There are people I know who have never heard of such classics as Horror of Dracula, The Devil Rides Out, The Conqueror Worm, Duel, & Dead Ringers.
