I'm surprised nobody has made a thread about this yet. Sure, it doesn't look like the most dramatically apt war movie ever made, but goddamn do those dog fights look awesome, and I am admittedly a huge James Franco fan ever since Freaks & Geeks aired. Besides all of that, though, being that this is the first World War I aviation film in a long, long time, I'll definitely be there, and I hope this will be a fun, kickass flick.

yeah, the dog fights look amazing. Sadly, it will probably suck due to shitty acting and a bad story line (ala Pearl Harbor). I still might check this out on the silver screen though.

This movie had a production budget of $60,000,000. There is no chance it will come close to making that back in it's theatre run. I thought the trailer was pretty lame with the exception of some nice eye candy.

This is getting a big pass from me as I don't have a ball and chain to drag me to it :p

I went in with very, very low expectations, plus i guess seeing it for free was a bonus but i found Flyboys to be very entertaining. The script is full of cliches. So many i began to laugh, and the script definitely needed some work. But the aerial battles were fun, plus i played a game of who was going to die first and i was right most of the time. The love story definitely felt forced, and i found it a bit annoying that Franco's character andt the lovely lass could barely understand each other.
If you wait for this one on DVD make sure you have surround sound to boost your enjoyment.

Before I saw this, I heard 2 gentleman talking about it in the men's room.
One said, "It felt like a bunch of 15 minute segments just strung together to make a movie!"
Upon seeing it, I understood what he meant. It does feel as if it's one episode after another of a tv drama or in some parts a sitcom.
The dogfights however were quite something to watch. I too played the "who's gonna die first?" game.
Enjoyable film, but if you're not a fan of the genre wait for it on dvd!

I agree with Joshmo. I was entertained by this. Love the dogfights, and yes was playing the "Who was going die first?" game as well.

Nine posts... boy is this movie popular! Woo Hoo!!!
Oh well.
Yeah, I agree on the epiosodic nature of the movie. It does feel like a string of scenes instead of one whole thing. And there is little character development beyond the first dimension. I couldn't even remember their names. They were just: Fat guy, Black guy, Christian guy, Woodpecker guy, the guy from Torque, the guy who can't shoot, and the guy who had the girlfriend back home. And James Franco.
Was it just me, or did James Franco look like he was strung out on heroine towards the beginning? And would it kill him to get his teeth whitened?
All that said, this was a very enjoyable movie. Too long by far, but enjoyable. The problem was they kept putting in all these supposed "character" scenes with a lot of the minor characters with these empty subplots that went in ten minute arcs. Once one subplot ended, another began.
The production was just gorgious. This is easily one of the nicest looking movies this year. And the flight sequences were pretty hair raising - even if they were a tad unrealistic. I don't think those planes were that manuverable. It was like I was watching Crimson Skies: The Movie (that would make a good movie, BTW).
The love story was kinda... meh. But not really that grating. Plus if it was based on true events, I'm fine with it. But the language barrier was so strong it affected the audience.
And Martin Henderson's (guy from Torque) character was boarderline silly. He was constantly bitter and always in every single scene just to bring everything down. He would just pop up out of nowhere and say something like "Next time you won't be so lucky" blah, blah, blah.
Anyway, cliches aside, better than a lot of junk I've seen this year. But then again, it's been a pretty poor year.

It is a pretty good movie, just flawed.
And has surprisingly graphic violence for a PG-13 movie. Blood and everything.

Over done ,under acted crap. The story was flat, The Dogfight scenes were too far between and weren't really rewarding when you did get to one. Watching those planes whirl around in circles flying slower than some cars today drive, and shooting at each other in the EXACT SAME MANNER every fight isn't as thrilling as I thought it would be, Guess You had to be there.
