These BMW Films shorts have always been a fun thing for me to keep up on. They star Clive Owen as kind of like a non kung fu-just drive for hire kinda Jason Statham guy from the Transporter films. They have big budgets, great CGI, big action, car chase, gun shootouts, and surprisingly deep story lines for 9 minute film shorts. They are all produced by Tony and Ridley Scott and many of them are written by Andrew Kevin Walker and David Fincher, based off characters created by them and Fallon Worldwide.

My older brother, who is obsessed with cars just like me, introduced me to them years ago and when I became a fan of action films and action film directors I started to take notice of the big name directors (and even some smaller name guys) who have directed these interesting action shorts.

Here are some YouTube links to the 7 best (IMO) BMW films shorts:

Tony Scott's "Beat The Devil"

John Woo's "Hostage"

Joe Carnahan's "Ticker"

John Frankenheimer's "Ambush"

Guy Ritchie's "Star"

Ang Lee's "Chosen"

Wong Kai Wai's "The Follow"

My favorites are Ticker with Don Cheadle (the helicopter gun shootout chase and the twist ending rocked!) and Beat the Devil with Gary Oldman. I also enjoy the serene beauty of "Follow" with Mickey Rourke and Forest Whitaker. For those of you who enjoy flashy action, this is the perfect example of how its done. So...Which is your favorite?

I never saw Beat the Devil but I've seen the rest of them.

My personal favorite's were the one's Andrew Kevin Walker wrote, The Follow and The Ambush.

I loved Star though, too. The rest of them were awesome but were all about style and lacked substance.

Iņarritu's is the best one, followed by Ang Lee's, Wong Kar-Wai's and Joe Carnahan's flicks. But all of them are pretty worthy, with the exception of the Tony Scott pile of crap and the kind of lame John Woo clip.

I always thought Hostage was the best one.

I'm with Philip, I think that "Ticker" was so awesome in a physical and psychological sense. It keeps you on the edge of suspense wondering what is inside that case until the very end revealing that it's a heart ready for transplant. So beautiful and action packed!

It was a wonderful performance by Clive Owen and Don Cheadle as well.

No, he never did one which is such a shame since it is clearly his brand of filmmaking for sure.

They were all pretty good, yet all pretty much the same thing. I mean, what can you do with a guy and a car? Not much.

I liked Beat the Devil and Star just because they were a little different than the rest. Ticker was good too. The Follow was boring. Ambush was kinda pointless. John Woo's was dissapointing, but fun.

The Driver never had that much emotion or compassion for anyone he drove for. Ang Lee's was ok, but the music didn't match. My favorite is Ambush, you could tell Andrew Kevin Walker came up with something sick like that.

None of them were great but Powder Keg (Inarritu's) was my favorite.

The point of Ang Lee's was that the music didn't match. It was meant to be ironic, and that worked brilliantly.

Still, Innaritu's is easily the best of them all, and just a damn fine short film regardless.
