Popcorn; By Ben Elton
Should be directed by:?
Should Star: Quentin Tarantino (If you've not read the book you'll think I'm crazy, I'm not)

The Screwtape Letters; By CS Lewis
Possibly the best book I've ever read, this must NEVER be filmed. It wouldn't work.

The Discworld Novels; By Terry Prattchet
I couldn't pick one of this series but the most promising from a film standpoint would be Guards! Guards! Mort or Hogfather
They should be directed by Terry Gilliam and feature Christopher Lee as the voice of Death (the lead in the last 2 books i mentioned)

That's all I can think of right now

I would love to see a theatrical version of David Morrell's The Brotherhood of the Rose.

Or a well done theatrical version of Robert B. Parker's Spenser novels. The tv show was ok, but I think an R-rated movie could be great.

CS Lewis didn't REALLY write screwtape, did he?? I know that he did a forward, but I thought he just "came into" the volumes of letters by accident... that'd be cool if he actually DID write them and make it look like a mock doc kinda thing..anyhoo..

Books that Should be Movies....

~~"May We Borrow Your Husband," by Graham Greene, could make a pretty neat "romantic Comedy" kinda thing..

ermm... BULLET PARK by John cheever!!!
that would be a TWISTED fucking movie.

"Sentimental Education" by gustave Flaubert was probably already made into a movie somewhere, but I dont have the time to track it down.. it'd be cool though.

"A Disaffection," by James Kellman, would make an INCREDIBLE Danny Boyle kinda thing..

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula le Guinn. Should have been made by Stanley Kubrick.

Union Dues. Novel by John Sayles. Guess who should do the film?

American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Terry Gilliam. Some studio jackoff would give it to Tim Burton.

All I can think of at the moment is the hilarious BIMBOS OF THE DEATH SUN by Sharyn McCrumb. With Sigourney Weaver and Michael Douglas in the leads, with Terry Zwigoff at the helm, this novel would make the best fanboy fun-poking/homage-paying film since GALAXY QUEST.

Bolivian Diary by Ernesto Guevara de la Serna

it'd make one excellent film with a guerilla team in the Bolivian jungle, but because the American film industry is so image concious nobody would ever make a film based on pro-communist literatute.

Even though it is an Alex Cross novel and Along Came a Spider blew ass, Cat & Mouse by James Patterson is the best book I've ever read.

There are so many plausable twists in this book. You have to read this book.

Another interesting book I think would be a good movie is a book called The Bloody Red Baron.
It's one of those "what if" books. Baron asks the question what if the Red Baron was a vampire and what if he led vampires into dogfights against allied soldiers.
Very gruesome and interesting you should check it out.

Okay, I'll leak some information... My friend and I are planning on making The Catcher in the Rye and 1984 (title changed to "2084", I would suppose) around 2012 and 2014. Yeah yeah, it's far away, and we're only 17 right now, but have faith in us... If things go our way, you WILL see these books turned into two really good movies on those dates. We also plan to film Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson around 2009, and Battlefield Earth (LIKE THE BOOK) (which is actually GOOD) in about 2034. It'll, of course, have a different name so that people won't automatically deem it as "the remake to the worst movie of all time".

Call me silly if you want, but you'll be sorry when this all actually happens, and they all end up being great movies. But I trust that most of the Schmoes here won't diss a fellow Schmoe trying to make it big.

Just so you know, two versions of 1984 have already been made. And an animated movie of The Hobbit was made. And the reason Catcher in the Rye hasn't been made is because J.D. Salinger (the author) won't give anyone the rights to it. He is extremely opposed to the idea of there being a movie made based on his book, so it'll probably never happen.

I've always wanted to turn Jerry Spinelli's "Maniac Magee" into a movie it would be a great family movie. They did a tv movie of it in 2003 but I've never seen it and has yet to make it to video. Maybe someday it'll get made properly. I hate TV movies, except maybe Duel.

and I second that Ender's Game adaption, they could make a profitable franchise considering there are other books. I don't understand why this hasn't been made.

David Gordon Green was supposedly attached to direct Confederacy of Dunces but that fell through for some reason.

"The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" by Michael Chabon is my all-time favorite book. It's been in the works for awhile now, but I'm dying for the the day I finally get to see it on the big screen.

Yea..good book, but who would the target audience be? It might be a little deep for kids (I know its assigned to be read in like 5th grade...but its not like most of them actually choose to read it). And older potential viewers that haven't read the book might dismiss the movie as a kids movie based on its trailer. Tricky...if done right it could be great though.

Children's books need to get made into movies. Period.

They are usually short enough so that not much has to get cut (I like KAVELEIR AND CLAY and AMERICAN GODS as much as the next guy, but they'd be 7-hours long to do the stories justice), and they are often very visual and have FANTASTIC plots and thoughts. Some that shoul,d get made:

STAYING FAT FOR SARAH BYRNES, Chris Crutcher

STAR GIRL, Jerry Spinelli

THE GIVER, Lois Lowry

HOUSE OF THE SCORPIONS, I can't remember her name right now

And many, many more.

Couldnt agree more!

Luke Rheinhardt's THE DICE MAN is always the first novel that springs to mind when this question is asked.

Such a shame John Scleisenger's version never got made.

Totally see Darren Aronofsky, David Fincher, Oliver Stone or David Cronenburg directing it. The tongue in cheek satire would work a treat.

It's in the process of being made. Wolfgang Petersen is attached to the project. There have been a few script issues recently, but I'm hearing a goal of a possible 2009 release if everything falls into place.

"Dracula": You know, the PROPER adaptation, not a pussy romantic one. Dracula was written a true evil bastard and hence, his tale should be told the way it was intented.

"Intensity" Directed by David Fincher. Starring Thomas Krestchmann as Edgler Vess.

The ORIGINAL "War of the Worlds" it NEEDS to retain the stakes. Hyper-technologically advanced seige on technologically infant stage Earth and it's inhabitants.

"The Monk" great concept, wonderful sense of what the social taboos were like back when the novel was released.

"Doctor Jeykll and Mr. Hyde". Let's see some REAL Hyde action.

"I Am Legend" This has to be done SOME time.

Hallmark did that two-part Odyssey adaptation a few years back... it was actually not half bad. I agree, though, that a proper adaptation perhaps with a little more star power would do it good, though. But otherwise... it was pretty well done.

I nominate Ender's Game and Good Omens as the best books never to have been adapted. Ender's Game is well on its way, though, and Good Omens was almost ready a few years ago with Terry Gilliam at the helm, and starring Johnny Depp, but it was scrapped!!! :(

Catcher in the Rye wouldn't adapt to a good film, because the plot itself is fairly simplistic. Boy runs away from school, has adventures in New York, goes to see his sister. It would be very boring, and really normal. The whole point of the book is Holden's perception on things, and since the book is written in the 1st person, the only way to translate that to the screen would to use excessive voice over... and we all know that there's no way THAT would work.

Then again, they filmed 'Naked Lunch', so who knows...

SIREN30

At the Risk of sounding redundant:

1. The Man Who Laughs- yes, it was a silent film w/ Conrad Veidt but it was very loosely adapted. The story is Victor Hugo's best, imo, and is just waiting..and waiting. My dad wrote a screenplay for this film but there is really little chance of it being picked up. I just hope someone does it.

Other than that one, here are some other great options for film:

2. Kristen Lavransdatter by Sigrid Unset -it was inexpensively filmed in the seventies, I believe. But this story has the capacity to be the greatest biography-based epic ever made.

3. Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen-It's the only one left. And every film adaptation so far has been great so it's got some major shoes to fill. See my blog page about this Jane Austen subject- http://learnthebigapple.blogspot.com/2006/04/jane-austen-at-movies.html

4. Jack and Jill- Louisa May Alcott...an underrated and almost unknown story with lots of fabulous characters and tons of potential. It's just as good as Little Women.

5.Katherine by Anya Seton----this is one of my favorite books and will never be made because it's so unknown. But she is one hell of a heroine.
