Bill Hicks vs. Denis Leary

I always hear people comparing these two comics. While I do admit I'm not a savage anti-Leary person the way some people are, I think Bill Hicks blows him out of the water. It's not necessarily the alleged joke-stealing accusations either, I just think Hicks is better. I've listened to his comedy albums countless times and they're always just as funny as they were the first time. With Leary, it's funny once or twice but then you don't really feel the need to listen to it again.

I can't help but think of Lenny Bruce, another great comic who died too damn early and garnered limited attention....all while frat boy comics like Dane Cook sell ten times as many records.

While I do like Leary in his movies roles, his stand up never hooked me ("Life suck, get a fucking helmet!" is the only line of his that still makes me laugh) and I love Hicks stand up. I was one of the people who were silently thanking Garth Ennis for acknowledging him in Preacher. I think I'm gonna go get out my Hicks albums right now...

Not that big of a fan of Leary's stand-up, but he rules on Rescue Me. Bill Hicks is (was?) the better comedian. Daniel Tosh runs rings around Dane Cook btw. If you've never heard of him...look him up.

Bill Hicks is one of the 4 or 5 greatest comedians of all-time. Denis Leary is good, sometimes even very good, but not even close to Bill Hicks. I will say that Denis Leary is also a really good actor. Unfortunately we never got to see how Bill Hicks was in that department...though I'm not sure he would have crossed over to acting anyway. He was never about just being an "entertainer" in the traditional sense.

Bill Hicks was a prophet, a philisopher, activist, shrewd observer of human nature, and simply one of the funniest people to ever have lived.

I like Denis Leary, I like some of his stand up, I always enjoy seeing him in movies, but he simply doesn't come close to comparing to Bill as a comedian, as a person, as anything.
