View Full Version : Next Weekend's Box Office Predictions (High Crimes, Big Trouble, Van Wilder)
My predictions for next weekend:
1. PANIC ROOM - 20 MILLION
2. HIGH CRIMES - 14 MILLION
3. ICE AGE - 12 MILLION
4. THE ROOKIE - 11 MILLION
5. BIG TROUBLE - 7.1 MILLION
6. CLOCKSTOPPERS - 6.8 MILLION
7. BLADE 2 - 5.8 MILLION
8. VAN WILDER - 5 MILLION
9. A BEAUTIFUL MIND - 3 MILLION
10. E.T. - 2.9 MILLION
11. WE WERE SOLDIERS - 2.3 MILLION
12. LORD OF THE RINGS - 1.9 MILLION
13. SHOWTIME - 1.8 MILLION
14. DEATH TO SMOOCHY - 1.7 MILLION
15. MONSTERS BALL - 1.6 MILLION
16. RESIDENT EVIL - 1.4 MILLION
17. KISSING JESSICA STEIN - 1.2 MILLION
18. SORORITY BOYS - 1.1 MILLION
19. THE TIME MACHINE - 1 MILLION
20. MONSOON WEDDING - .7 MILLION
KISSING JESSICA STEIN has been doing really well and is doubling it's theaters count this next weekend and will be playing in around 300 theaters. It should continue to do pretty well and will for sure be in the top 20. I see it being #17 with around 1.2 Million. I'm hoping it continues to do well because if they keep adding theaters every weekend and it keeps doing well maybe it will actually come to a theater near me. I want to see it really bad.

my predictions:
Panic Room will probably claim the top once again, with a healthy 19.6M. its good since Fincher really needed a hit.
Van Wilder might do ok, but the moviegoing audience doesn't really seem very receptive to teen comedies nowadays (like Slackers, Sorority Boys, some others I forgot)
I think High Crimes will do ok business, but nothing to write home about. It does have Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman again, but the ads and trailers haven't been very persuasive (I just loathe Morgan Freeman's constant use of the word wildcard ("I'm the wildcard" "I love being the wildcard")) I think it'll make about 12M in its opening weekend.
Big Trouble, I think, will do really well, at least for the cast involved. Jason Lee will probably attract the View Askew crowd, while Allen gets the family crowds. I think it'll make around 17M in the opening. But I'm really bad at predicting, so it could go many ways

What about THE ACCIDENTAL SPY starring Jackie Chan? In JoBlo's release page it lists this as a 4/5/02 release.

PANIC ROOM will probably stay in the #1 spot. HIGH CRIMES will follow close by, probably with $14-$20 mil. BIG TROUBLE will open with $9 mil, and VAN WILDER will most likely wrangle in $7 mil, then drop like a rock.

Hate to say this, but Joblo's a little behind on his release updates. THE ACCIDENTAL SPY is looking for a new date.
I predict HIGH CRIMES will edge out PANIC ROOM next weekend. The latter should suffer a post-holiday 40% drop. Meanwhile, Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman are a formidable b.o. team. So far this year teen movies have done mediocre business. I see the trend continuing with Van Wilder. The delays may have done BIG TROUBLE more harm than good. Also, DEATH TO SMOOCHY just proved that audiences aren't in the mood for black comedies. Here are my initial predictions.
1. HIGH CRIMES (2600+ screens) - $19 million
2. PANIC ROOM - $18.5 million
3. ICE AGE - $12.5 million
4. THE ROOKIE - $10 million
5. VAN WILDER (2000+ screens) - $9 million
6. BIG TROUBLE (1800+ screens) - $8 million
7. BLADE II - $6.5 million
8. CLOCKSTOPPERS - $6 million
9. E.T. - $3.5 million
10. A BEAUTIFUL MIND - $2.5 million

i dont think the delay will do harm to its money-earning. unlike say Rollerball, or The Time Machine, where the delay was a sign of how bad the movie is, BT was only delayed because of 9-11. other than that, its been getting a lot of good buzz
Regarding BIG TROUBLE;
its been getting a lot of good buzz
From whom? I just checked Rottentomatoes and I found three negative reviews and one positive. This movie needs good reviews to do well at the box-office. If it doesn't open well, there's not enough breathing room the following weeks for good word of mouth to take effect.

It doesn't matter what the stupid critics say. Usually those critics are payed to review the movies, and are paid to rate it in such way. They Gave Smoochy good reviews, and look what happened. They gave plenty of reviews we thought they were wrong about.

I am starting to think BIG TROUBLE will fail horribly. First since people are not into dark comedies right now(which was obvious due to people totally ignoring the spectacular DEATH TO SMOOCHY). Plus SMOOCHY had a much bigger cast than TROUBLE, Robin Williams is much more "bankable" than Tim Alenn(whose biggest hits are CGI DIsney movies). And the double punch of Edward Norton and Danny DeVito out weighs Jason Lee and Rene Russo by far. I just think TROUBLE will do the same as SMOOCHY.

The topic is about how well the movie's going to do at the box-office. All I'm saying is that a quirky comedy like BIG TROUBLE needs the help of critics to open decently. And for your information, DEATH TO SMOOCHY got clobbered by the critics. It got a 38% fresh rating at Rottentomatoes. Ebert gave it a half a star, for Christ's sake. It would be nice if you did some research to back up what you say.

Oh, well here in Florida, Smoochy is getting awesome reviews. So thats why I said that MAX. Well, I guess I just suck at guessing, cause I had big trouble, which was hilarious, get 31 million, but it made only 4 million, or something like that.
