Anyone wanna flame me?
I'm SICK of people's reactions when I tell them I haven't seen any of the movies. Makes me want to slug 'em. ALL OF THEM! MUAHAHAHA!
Anyway, I haven't seen them because they don't interest me. And when I say that (and I don't bad mouth any of the actors or filmmakers involved) it gets a BIGGER reaction.
I don't know how to answer them! Someone help!

You're not really missing anything. They're all decent movies (I'd give each a 7/10 for different reasons), but they're nothing really special. Particularly if you don't like fantasy/adventure type flicks, I don't expect you'd be blown away or anything. They were a phenomenon, so for that reason they're very notable, but I don't think they're amazing movies or you should be chastised for not checking them out. There are atleast a thousand better movies you've probably not seen that would be worth seeing before something like this that doesn't even pique your interest.

Try and see Fellowship of the Ring, because I really liked it and found it to be the best of the trilogy. Everything else becomes pretty much expected and redundant -- did anyone tell PJ that stopping the action to a slow motion crawl while the Enya-like soundtrack wails gets a little tedious after a while?
The series rebounded with the third, but the thrill of the battle sequences, the emotion prevalant in the first film, were now drained due to a slight bit of bloat. I like the films, but they aren't above criticism -- although I will say they are better than the books, none of which stimulated my imagination.

you.....havent.....seen......Lord of the Rings????
me dies of shock
if they dont interest you in any way theres no point in seeing them, i really dont understand some peoples reactions when they hear someone hasnt seen a particular film

I suggest you see them, not because I think they're great movies, but because it's worth it not to have people break your balls about it. Some people cream themselves over these movies so if they see someone who hasn't seen them they go apeshit.

First of all, if anyone busts your balls about Lord of the Rings: laugh at them. I don't care what anyone says, these films were not cinematic feats. They didn't bring anything new to the table as far as cinematic pioneering goes. Just keep in mind if you ever do decide to sit down and watch them, you're gonna have to sit through 9 hours of nerdier-than-Star Wars jibberish.
Then there's the whole "best fantasy novels ever made" rebuttles. Yeah, that would mean something if everyone loved anglo-saxon fantasy.
Back to the Future. Now that's a fuckin' trilogy.

I agree with what most people are saying. Don't worry about what other people say to you when you tell them you haven't seen the trilogy. Don't watch them just to please them or so you don't have to have your balls busted. If you want to see them, see them. If you don't, don't. It's that simple. Don't worry about what others think or say.
BTW....I haven't seen the trilogy either. ;)

if you were going to see any, I'd definatly tell you to see the Fellowship
(i personally think Sean Bean's performance was the best out of them all, anyways) but it's no big deal--they're not for everyone and if you're tired of people's reactions, then just lie and say you have seen them!

Unfortunately, these films' popularity is for all the wrong reasons. I just realised that what I wrote makes it seem like I dislike the films. Allow me to make it clear that I think that the seperate films but especially the trilogy as a whole are the single most incredible cinematic achievement of all time, and the films are definitely among the best of the new century. But I don't say this blindly - rather, I can't help but marvel at the unbelievable levels of cinematic craft Jackson, his crew and his cast reached with this epic undertaking. It's a monumental cinematic achievement that dwarfs any Hollywood epic of the past years - Gone with the Wind, Ben Hur, Lawrence of Arabia humble themselves in its presence. I recommend you see it, if not to enjoy the films (as many people dislike them) but to at least marvel at the cinematic landmark they are - the visuals, the camera work, the acting, the costumes, sets, lighting, visual effects, CGI, locations, writing, action, music... it's all unmatched. Absolutely unmatched. Forget fanboy mumbo-jumbo - at least see it for the reasons I stated.

It's no problem at all that you haven't seen them. They're good but not absolutely fantastic. Now if you tell me that you haven't seen the "Star Wars" trilogy, we've got a problem. :D

When it comes to trilogies I'd take a time travelin' (Back To The Future), a boomstick-blastin' (Evil Dead), whip-wieldin' (Indiana Jones), agent annihilatin' (The Matrix) or empire ending (Star Wars) trilogy over a bunch of talking and walking hobbits anyday.
Although, I'll admit to only having seen the first and half of the 2nd LOTR film. I personally prefer Jackson's oldert flicks (Brain Dead, Bad Taste and Meet The Feebles).

Lord of the Rings is the product of a B-movie shitty storyteller surrounding himself with the best in each department. The result is a voluptuously shallow made for t.v. movie.

I dont blame u Tweek.
Up until about 2 years ago i had never seen any of the GODFATHER movies, simply because they looked boring as shit.
Now i really love them, but i really had to force myself to watch them just to see what all the fuss was about.

I fell asleep during episode one, loved the original trilogy and episodes 2 and 3

That is by far the most exaggerated assessment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy I have EVER read. Congratulations :)

I haven't either. Fantasy's not my thing in movie or book form. I saw the first LOTR and it didnt capture my attention. Honestly I forgot most of it within a few days. I want to go back and give it another chance sometime, but I don't see it as the end all of movies.

To Tweek,
There's nothing wrong with the LOTR trilogy. If you don't see it, that’s fine... but making the assessment that people would rag on you because you haven’t is just silly. Very FEW people would actually do that, and those few are dumbasses who shouldn’t be generalized alongside the rest of us.
Personally, I love these movies... it’s on my top ten best trilogies’ list, and The Fellowship is one of my favorite movies ever, I’d recommend them all to just about anybody who can tolerate longer films.
I say watch them. I don’t see why not. You can’t make an honest judgment on the films if you haven’t seen them. And It’s not going to kill you, anyways. You can still hate the movie after you watch it... you’d just argue your point better if you do.

Just watch Clerks II instead. Sums it all up, saves you nine hours.

Looking back I find the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy to be very overated and that the only good parts about the films are the graphics (soon to be outdated, probably already are) and the massive fight scenes. And to be honest, the massive fight scenes get old fast and by the third film I was sick and tired of them.
I couldn't stand the books either, but the movies were a large improvement on the books cutting a lot of the fat (but not enough.)

BINGO! The most over-rated piles of cinematic shite ever. I tried watching the 1st one, twice... Got 40 mins in each time, and just simply couldn't fucking stomach it.... Tried the 2nd one just to see if it was any better, or any less fucking boring... No luck there either. I fucking hate these movies.

Just keep going with "They don't interest me" reason - if people don't like it, they'll have to get over it. I don't think you SHOULD see them, but I thought they were all very good and cool movies, but I like that type of movie and genre. I recommend them, but I wouldn't put a gun to your head and tell you to watch them.

This from the person who loves X-Men 3 and has a Kurt Cobain avatar. :p
Anywho, I love the films, they're definately among my favorites, but I can understand not being interested in them or liking them, but to call them shit or crap because you didn't like them, is a little underhanded. I personally hate Titanic, but I recognize and respect it. I find these films special to me as it got me into the fantasy genre. The problem was that after that, there wasn't very much to go, besides fantasy games.
And wonderful performances, especially Bernard Hill as Theoden (it's impossible for me not to get choked up at the charge on the Pelennor Fields, mainly cos of Hill's speech), Sean Bean as Boromir, David Wenham as Faramir, Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, and of course Andy Serkis as Gollum.

You're making a thread saying you're pissed about people's reactions when you tell them you haven't seen LOTR? Come on, they don't interest you? They're the biggest fuckin' movies in the last 30 fuckin' decades, and that's you're excuse for not seeing them? You're not in the least bit curious about what all the fuss is about? I call bullshit, man. I think you like the fact that you haven't seen the movies, and you like provoking those emotions. Why else would you call attention to it by starting this topic. Just see the fuckin' movies. There's no excuse not to. They're GOOD. They're POPULAR. And no harm can come from simply sitting down, watching the first one. If its catches your interest, then over the next few weeks, watch the others. If you didn't like the first one, then at least you can tell people, "eh, I gave it a chance, but it didn't interest me." Then that's acceptable. What? You can't dish out $1.99 to rent it? You got so much going on in your life that you can't spare 3 hours? Gimmie a break.
You said, "I don't know how to answer them. Someone help!" Well, there's my advice. It's good advice, trust me. Watch the fuckin' movie. If you can't get through the first half hour, then whatever. Stop watching. But at least then you can stop calling attention to the fact that you haven't seen them just because you're not interested.

I disagree with the last post on so many levels.
Just see the fuckin' movies. There's no excuse not to. They're GOOD. They're POPULAR.
Well golly gee, if its popular then theres no excuse not to see it!
I loved the LOTR movies,(hate the books) but i still found that funny. Some movies just dont interest some people.
Theres alot of popular movies that i know are widely held, but im not exactly rushing out the good simply due to that.
But at least then you can stop calling attention to the fact that you haven't seen them just because you're not interested.
Its a RANT forum.....

Well, okay, by popular, I didn't mean, Tony has a Mustang so let's all hang out with him. I mean popular as in world-wide phenomenon with several hundred millions fans. Some of the highest grossing films ever, not to mention its awards. I'm not saying it's popularity is a reason TO see it, I'm saying it's the reason why I'm so baffled she HASN'T seen it, as if you can somehow just happen to miss out on them. You know, maybe even catch 10 minutes of it on cable? No? Obviously she's AWARE of the movies, no? Is she AVOIDING them? Just because of indifference?
I know it's a rant forum, but it a ridiculous rant. It's not even really a rant.
She wanted "help." So the only logical thing to do if you don't like people's reactions when you tell them you haven't seen a movie, is see the movie. It could not hurt. There's more reasons to see a movie than to not see a movie. If you want to be all unique by not seeing a profoundly popular movie, just say so. But I really doubt that people are bringing this up in conversation on a daily basis. If you're hanging around people who mention LOTR so much that it ruins your life, maybe you're with the wrong crowd. And if they talk about it so much, they must be nerdy fans, and in that case, they would have Clockwork Orange'd you long long ago. And if its just random, maybe once every two months that someone brings it up...who cares? Why make a thread on it?

So she's in the minority, so what? MySpace.com is the biggest internet website in the world right now, and yet I've never visited it in my life. I've seen other people play around on it.
Oh, and another thing - I've never seen Titanic. The highest grossing movie of all time, and this movie geek hasn't seen it. God forbid. Just because it's sweeping the nation, and groundbreaking, doesn't make it must see viewing.

I'd actually consider you lucky. You don't have to bite your tongue when a girl says "Titanic is the best movie EVER!" I mean, like I said, I respect it, but I just don't see what is so great about it.

Missing my point entirely.
I'm not saying it's a must-see. Please, God, read my posts carefully. I don't want to look like some lotr nerd who yells out "BLASPHEMY" just cause someone hasn't seen the film.
But you know what, I can assume she's seen Batman. That's all I care about now. Batman is the shit. LOTR can suck my balls.
EDIT: For the record, I think Titanic is the shit, too.
