Hey all,
I'm a horror filmmaker based in Sydney, Australia (and new to the JoBlo Forums!)
My short film FORESTA ROSSA is playing at It Came From Lake Michigan Independent Film Festival - October 20-22 - Racine, Wisconsin.
Just wondering if anyone from the JoBlo forums was going?
It looks like a top event, especially if your a horror fan. A bunch of cool genre films will be playing there and the guest list is very impressive. Check it out at:

Anyway, if you go, I'd love to get any feedback about my film.
Cheers!

Just thought I'd check again ... is anyone in the midwest checking out It Came From Lake Michigan next weekend?
I wish I could get there as it looks like a fest that actually cares about indie horror.

How long have you been involved with filmmaking?
What are you favorite horror films?

I started fooling around with Super 8 when I was a boy, so in answer to your first question: on and off for a couple of decades. However, I have only returned to filmmaking in a serious capacity in the last few years, as University commitments side tracked me for a while.
My taste in horror is pretty diverse. Romero's Dead films are near the top of the list. I'm also a fan of a lot of Fulci's work (particulary The Beyond and City of the Living Dead). Love Argento, and some of Bava's stuff too. John Carpenter is another favourite director, as is Cronenberg. Tobe Hooper's TCM is also a favourite.
I know "torture films" are being a bit over done of late, but Takashi Miike (and even Rob Zombie) have actually been able to have me squirm in my chair (rare for this desensitised fan) so I've appreciated this recent direction in horror, when handled well.

I am a 70's child, so for me it's all about the indies. Romero's 'Night of the Living Dead' (1968) is my favorite film and maverick filmmakers like Larry Fesseden, the man who made 'Habit' (1997). I love Indies!!!!!!!! :D

I had the pleasure of seeing it at the Drive-In back in 1970, this was a film that had a huge impact on me. This was a film that pulled no punches, being that I was so damned young at the time...it really scared the shite out of me!;)

We have pretty similar tastes. :)
(I think Wendigo and Session 9 are two of the more interesting indie horror flicks of recent years)
Also, I forgot to mention Phantasm above - definitely one of my faves. Have you seen the Anchor Bay Phantasm set (I think they only released it in the UK). - A 5 disc set that comes in a hollow sphere? Its an awesome addition to the collection!

I am trying like hell to finish a script that I plan to shoot on Mini-DV, basically it is guerilla filmmaking, It is something of a peronsal piece that I have to shoot. the subject is ' Vampirism', however unlike the current trend I want to take Vampires back to formula.
The Vampire in cinema has been tweeked a bit too much, with the goth themed vamps of today, clans and that BS. My intention is to bring Vampires into present time, feeding into our current climate of fear.

I would LOVE to get that 'Sphere' set available from Anchor bay in the UK, I love this series...Don Should get to do Phantasm 5. Too bad it just isnt happening, there is a finished script written by Pulp Fiction scribe, Roger Avery that won't see the light of day...sadly.

Yep, the whole goth/clan thing is becoming very annoying.
Your script sounds intriguing...
I wish you luck with the project, keep me updated.
Also, hate to be a tech-head but have you decided what camera you'll be shooting on etc? Do you have a budget in mind?
Yeah, the Sphere set is great - the four films, and another disc packed with extras. I agree Coscarelli should be able to make Phantasm 5 (I'm always worried that Angus will get to old - or worse :( - before it gets made. Avery's apocalyptic script would be an awesome finale to the series!

My camera is the Cannon ZR-20 mini-dv, I purchased it a few years ago. My budget is strictly out of pocket, plus I have most of the equipment needed to start up. I just have to get this damned script finished, and all the other headaches that come with wanting to do your own thing...;)
I hear you regarding Angus Scrimm, the man isn't getting any younger!!!
I agree, a finale would be sweet!

Yeah, I hear you - it's great to be in control, and very liberating, when you own your camera, equiptment etc. But it can also be a tough road to hoe (espescially financially)!
By the way, I don't know if you listen to Deaddpit.com - an awesome horror internet talk show - but they recently ran a great Angus Scrimm interview over two shows. They are free and archived at www.deadpit.com
Definitely worth checking out!:D

My film The Stork is screening at the Winnipeg Short Film Massacre this Halloween. It's too bad we can't see eachother's work. Maybe some day!
Dead One- Me and you have the same camera. I also have a Super 8 camera that I love to practice with (I shot The Stork on B/W Super 8).

Yo kev, whats up?
Great to hear your doing well, good luck with your film 'The Stork'. Who says we can't see each others stuff, I have been thinking about putting together a quick trailer to represent what I will be shooting. Leif took this route trying to get financing for 'Demon Machine'. Right now I am still ironing out my script about Vampires, I just can't wait to get this thing rocking and rolling.
BTW, the same cam---coincidence? LOL!:D Leif Jonker Shot his vampire opus 'Darkness' in super 8. I have considered utilizing black & white for my project, because I love the look and the stark contrasts and shadows that you can't get shooting in color.
Night Of The Living Dead (1968) is the perfect example of what I am talking about... ;)

Hey Lovecraft. I was there!!! Did you go to the party thing the first nite? I was the heavy-set guy greeting people outside the dance hall!!!! Unfortunately I wasn't able to see your film, since I was helping out Wayne Clingman, the organizer of the festival. I look forward to next year!!!
