That's right, it is possible, there can be a great ending that doesn't involve a twist or some big explanation of the events that just occured.

Some of my fav's...

Being There
E.T. The Extra Testical
Apocalypse Now
Ordinary People
The 400 Blows
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

*Requiem for a Dream
*Trainspotting
*A Clockwork Orange
*Secrets and Lies
*The War Zone
*The Talented Mr Ripley

And People are divided about the Shawshank Redemption...I'd consider it a twist myself, but for those who don't i'll include it here!

There are loads more...I'll just have to have a think about this one!

My favorite movie endings are:

1. Braveheart-inspirational!
2. Shawshank Redemption-perfect.
3. Good Will Hunting-bittersweet.
4. An Officer and a Gentleman
5. Romancing the Stone
6. Pretty Woman-3 very romantic endings
7. It's a Wonderful Life-holiday spirited.
8. Raiders of the Lost Ark-funny,frustrating and ironic.
9. Wayne's World-multiple funny endings.
10.Dead Poet Society-touching.
11.All About Eve-classic
12.The Lord of the Rings-I wanted to continue the journey-even after 3 hours.

I like endings with ambiguity.

1. Five Easy Pieces
2. The Hill
3. Valdez is Coming ("We should have gone to Nogales!")
4. Foxfire
5. The Thing ("Let's just sit here awhile...see what happens.")
6. Limbo

For me Casablanca has such a perfect ending I don't know how you can improve up on it, same with Citizen Kane. I don't think Gone w/ the Wind has a twisty ending, and I'd certainly say it's ending is excellent, and the ending of the Godfather is fantastic also.

Tons of great endings listed, but a few not mentioned so far that I love:

2001: A Space Odyssey (my favorite ending of all-time)
City Lights
Aguirre: The Wrath of God
Do The Right Thing
Scarface
The Graduate
The Conformist
Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid (next to 2001, my favorite final frame)

*Nevermind, while I was posting Heart man posted up 2001, but I'll leave it because it's my #1 ending

I agree with you there Paul...I do consider the ending of Shawshank to be one of the best twists going meself...But a few Schmoes disagree about this one!

Maybe because there wasn't much of an element of "mindfuck"...I dunno!?

I'm with you 100% though!

And also good call on Quadrophenia!

Ilove the ending to Ravenous.
The way the camera slowly pulls up with that awesome music playing. An interesting ending to a quite interesting movie.

Agreed. There was just something I really liked about this movie, and The Edge too, especially in how they both ended.

Aside from all of the ones mentioned I think Ghost World had a great ending.

The ending of Fargo when Frances McDormand and her husband are in their bed together, talking about the 1 cent stamp... man, that blows my mind. THAT is beauty in simplicity.

I wouldn't put Shawshank under twist. The film doesn't really end in a twist; there is a twist towards the end of the film, but it doesn't really end with Andy escpaing. It ends with Andy and Red meeting on the beach on a beautiful day. Doesn't sound much of a twist to me.
