I just saw the departed, and I thought it was going to be good, but damn that was a good movie. I always liked Goodfellas but not as much as alot of people on here.
I think Jack's performance was much better then any in Goodfellas. Leo and Matt Damon's permance was strong then Ray Lioattas. Joe Pesci probaly had better then those two though.
I also love how fast paced this movie was. Yes it was 2 and a half hours long. But you cannot say the movie carried on.
I would not be surprised if that will be the best movie of 2006.
You were never bored with this movie. Some say he went a little too far with the twist, and suspense, and overuse of violence. But I thought the violence fit in with the hard edge atmosphere it created.

It doesn't touch Goodfellas, although I give both the same rating.

I'll have to see how Departed holds up on repeat viewings, cause GoodFellas is still very watchable.

But on first watch, Departed is up there with Marty's best.

I think Jack's performance was much better then any in Goodfellas.

I personally found Nickolson's performance a little annoying. He is all over the place. I think that he may have based his character on the devil.;)

DiCaprio has the best performance, followed by Damon and Sheen.

Anyway Goodfellas is one of the best movies I have ever seen and it's Scorsese's second best. Having only seen The Departed once I think it's in the middle of the pack. but it's a pretty fuckin' good pack.

I know wut u mean when u say he based his performance on the devil. But I think he has the best performance by far. I also thought Marky Marks performance was funny as shit and he fit in with the great actors. He defantly did not have a the top 2 or 3 best performance in the movie, but it was damn amusing.

Both films are very riveting studies of mob life and its effect on human nature. I'll give the slight edge to Goodfellas, because it seemed like a much more personal film for Scorsese and its form of storytelling is among the best I've seen, along with the awesome use of its soundtrack, which blended in perfectly with the picture.

Goodfellas - 10/10
The Departed - 9.5/10 (so far, the best film of the year)

Goodfellas is a lot better. It's a classic, and the Departed isn't quite on that level, but it is still excellent though.
They're both in my top 5 of Scorcese's...I think.

Ya, you are right about Wahlberg, when we first see his character interviewing DeCaprio, he is hysterical.

The Departed may be the best movie of the year, and I don't doubt that it will hold up well on repeated viewings, but this is not a contest:

Goodfellas is far better.

Btw, I do think Dicaprio deserve praise for his performance in The Departed (though his 3 best performances are still 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape?', 'This Boy's Life', and 'The Aviator'), but I was honestly more impressed with Matt Damon's cold, chilling turn in a villainous role that he should specialize in more.

Jack Nicholson stole the show, however. Talk about relishing in scenery chewing. ;)

Not to insult anyone becuase I LOVED The Departed but this is a no brainer for me. Goodfellas is a modern classic. This may be his best work sing Goodfellas but I certainly wouldn't call it equal to that movie.

I did like Goodfellas alot 9/10. But I think people do overrate it. I have no problem with calling it a modern classic, I think departed will also become one. But I just think Departed had better performances, faster pace, I think the script had so many chances to fall apart and become one big blunder, but never did.

Like most of the other people here, I think they're both great movies, but Goodfellas is just untouchable. But still, The Departed is the best movie of the year so far, and I really think this could be "the one" for Scorsese...Oscar-wise, I mean.

GoodFellas is better, but i must say that the Departed is now in my top 5 Scorsese film list, and being that he is my favorite director ever, it's climbing higher and higher on my overall list of movies the more i think about it. It is his best since GoodFellas just like everyone is saying, but it will probably take a while for me to like it more than GF, which is still highly unlikely that i ever will.

Goodfellas is EASILY the better movie. The Departed is very good but very flawed. I know a lot of people loved the last twenty minutes but to me it was overkill and was just too much and just felt too contrived in one violent shock after another after another after another.

Goodfellas 10/10
The Departed 7/10

The Departed is a great crime film, but it doesn't even come close to Goodfellas which is a classic of the genre.

Nice choice of words there. :D I do agree to some extent that it was maybe a bit over-the-top towards the end, but I thought it worked for the movie. I don't think it was ever aiming for complete realism. I thought it was trying to be somewhat exaggerated and larger-than-life, so the ending fit it with that in mind.

While both good movies, The Departed fucking OWNS Goodfellas as far as I'm concerned.... Goodfellas has GOT to be one of the most over-rated movies ever.

Both are fantastic films, and as it stands right now they probably sit at 2 and 3 of my top Scorsese films.

The Departed is easily the better paced film, as my one criticism (if you could even call it that) of Goodfellas is the pace is disjointed and sometimes jarring at times, especially the final act, but that was intentional.

Goodfellas wins based on the strength of the acting though. I'd say Leo and Liotta are probably on equal ground in their respective roles, but as good as Jack is he's nothing compared to De Niro or Pesci in Goodfellas.

It's a close call but I myself must go with Goodfellas. Neither film is perfect, though, especially because both seem to have rather annoying multiple endings that take almost as long to finish as Return of the King.

The performances, though, are spectacular in both.

I agree with the sentiment that THE DEPARTED is definatly more exciting and thrilling and better paced. However, GOODFELLAS is probably a deeper films that doesn't cheat with shocks as much. Both excellent movies, IMO.

I like THE DEPARTED better, personally. But that's just me.

I don't think The Departed will ever be able to touch Goodfellas (which has a solid spot in my top 10 of all-time). However, The Departed is an excellent film, and actually holds up extremely well on repeat viewings, much like Goodfellas.

The Departed was an incredible film, extremely solid work from Scorsese and up there with Raging Bull, The Aviator, and other films of his. But Goodfellas is and will always remain his undisputed masterpiece, and there's no doubt about that.

Actually, it seems pretty unanimous that Raging Bull his masterpiece. Every critic and film scholar says that it's his own personal Citizen Kane.

Well, I'm not every film critic and film scholar, now am I? :p The comparison to Citizen Kane derives from the fact that Raging Bull was definitely Scorsese's most personal film, specifically because he was fighting a major drug addiction and was at the time of production convinced that it would be his last movie. The fact that it's his most personal doesn't make it his best, though. Either way I prefer Taxi Driver over Raging Bull, and Goodfellas way over both of them.

You said it was his "undisputed" masterpiece, and I was just clarifying that Raging Bull is pretty much unanimously considered his masterpiece (even though most of his films are masterpieces).

Actually, I believe Mean Streets was his most personal, but I could be wrong. Scorsese didn't even want to do Raging Bull initially. De Niro had to really break his balls to get into it. I think once he was into it, he became more fond of it. I definitely wouldn't call it his most personal film. His greatest? Maybe.

Perhaps. Now that I think of it, The Last Temptation of Christ may be his most personal film, considering his prominent Roman Catholic background and his initial desire to become a priest.

Also, it's hard to argue about a consensus. I sort of got the impression that Goodfellas is hailed by most people - critics and average schmoes alike - as Scorsese's best film, but I guess it was just me.

Well, if we were judging by the consensus of fellow schmoes, then yeah GoodFellas takes it. Raging Bull is the critical darling.

I guess it's kinda impossible to know which is his most personal. Last Temptation wouldn't surprise me.

Scorsese has said that Last Temptation is his most personal movie. In fact, he said that the Scorsese/DeNiro/Schrader pairing has made one film "for Schrader", Taxi Driver, one movie "for DeNiro", Raging Bull, and one movie "for Scorsese", Last Temptation of Christ. Each was a very personal pet project for that individual and they convinced the other two involved to make it with them even though each time they doubted if their movie had an audience outside of their little trio.

As for Scorsese's most acclaimed film, Raging Bull is definetly biggest among the critical community, film scholars, other directors and filmmakers, etc. while I'd say GoodFellas is his "popular" favorite, considered the best by the average moviegoer and probably by the average schmoe.
