Ebert Hopes to Be Back for Oscars
Thursday October 12 11:31 AM ET

Roger Ebert hopes to be fully recovered in time for the Academy Awards and the Cannes Film Festival. In a letter published Thursday in the Chicago Sun-Times, the Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic and co-host of the "Ebert & Roeper" TV show says he's looking forward to getting back to work full time early next year.

"One thing I've discovered is that I love my job more than I thought I did, and I love my wife even more!" he wrote.

Ebert had surgery June 16 to remove a cancerous growth on his salivary gland. He also had emergency surgery July 1 after a blood vessel burst.

He had undergone cancer surgery three times before the June operation once in 2002 to remove a malignant tumor on his thyroid gland and twice on his salivary gland the next year.

He announced in the letter that his first movie review in months will run Friday. He decided to review "The Queen" after an "Ebert & Roeper" producer brought him a copy of the movie on DVD. He plans to continuing doing occasional reviews until he's fully recovered.

The 64-year-old Ebert, who's now at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, thanked fans and colleagues for their support.

He has been a film critic at the Chicago Sun-Times since 1967. He won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 1975, the same year he teamed up with Gene Siskel of the rival Chicago Tribune to launch their TV show. Siskel died in 1999. Ebert has co-hosted the show with fellow Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper since 2000.

I can't believe it will take him that long to recover fully. So I guess that means the Ebert & Roeper & the movies show will have guest critics for quite a while.

Well at least he's recovering fully. Is he not going to be able to have a Top 10 of the year now since he missed out on so many movies?

arghh

The two film critics I trust, Ebert and JoBlo, are both out of commision.

He's an Illini fan. I gotta love him for that! I wish him well.

I REALLY miss reading his reviews in the Friday paper...it's just not the same having Roeper become a substitute in that department. Here's hoping his health improves not just in time for the Oscars, but soon (is that too selfish of me?).

I can understand why he's not doing his tv show but I don't understand why he isn't writing his reviews. I miss him too but I am enjoying the guest hosts.

He isn't seeing the movies. The guy can't even walk. The only movies he is seeing are ones that are being given to him on DVD by his show's producers. The 2 new movies he's seen that he's only mentioned have been Half Nelson and The Queen. He just put up his Queen review today. Hasn't even put up his Half Nelson review yet.

Gosh, I hope I didn't sound too harsh there. I didn't mean to.

I didn't realize he was that bad. I just assumed he was having trouble with his speech since it was his salivary gland that was affected. I'm so sorry to hear he has so much rehab ahead of him.

Scarfather- why is JoBlo out of commission? Did I miss something?

But it still sucks, because this is Oscar season.

The best of wishes to Ebert!

Man, I really want to know what he thinks of The Departed, since he's such a big fan of Scorsese.

I miss him sooooo much on TV that I just had to buy a copy of his latest book - "Awake in the Dark" to tide me over.

I'm sure he will come back to review the movies he missed though (that are worth seeing) - because I'm sure he'll have The Departed on his top ten list! (I can say that and I haven't even see it yet!:D )

All the best to Roger and his recovery, though!

Yeah, I got that for my birthday earlier tonight, and can't wait to get started. I know I won't be able to put it down.

Ebert and JOBLO are two of the best, no matter how soon either of them get back to kicking ass, it wont be soon enough.

I was too....for a while, but then they stopped getting Kevin Smith (my whole opinion of him reversed based solely on his performance on that show) and started getting A.O. Scott and people I don't think had much presence.
