I've seen a few pretty damn good, but sort of depressing movies lately and I was wondering what I'm missing in this area. All of the ones I could think of were pretty new films too so I must be missing a lot of older movies...

Some of my selections :
21 Grams

Mystic River
Butterfly Effect
American Beauty (I've never heard anyone else discribe it like that, but I think the end is absolutely depressing)
Life is Beautiful
Vanilla Sky
***KIND OF A SPOILER FOR MAGNOLIA****
Also, I wouldn't really call Magnolia a "downer", because at the end everyone's problems are pretty much solved.

My favorite downer movie has to be oldboy.(alas its also one of my favorites in general)
On the Magnolia front, absolutly love that movie six ways from sunday, I wouldnt say that all of the storylines sere resolved. The gameshow hosts storyline was woefully unresolved. Everytime I watch the movie I keep hopeing I just missed an entire scene or something, but no.

No matter the so seriouness of a topic or the handling of, all good movies are never downers, for me. Maybe a remark that the state of that is irreversible or already gone, but there's always that mixture of pleasantness that you watched a good movie.
This never applies to documentaries.
Shawshank selection? That's the one where the two embrace on the beach innit?
