No and like I already said, I dont plan on it. The show he had sucked enough. No need to sit through more of it in a theater. I have seen him on Conan, on a couple of award shows, on the comedy central telethon last night and still havent seen what the fuss was about.

Is that good enough for you?

And as far as the studios, yeah they have the right to advertise. Never said they didnt. I just dont like having shit crammed down my throat on every channel.

Usually when a movie over advertises I wont watch it just because I grew tired of seeing the same couple of commercials for it over a period of weeks/months.

Especially when even the trailer cant make me crack a smile.

I never "got" the Ali G show. Infact I thought it was awful. Cohen's character in Ricky Bobby was enjoyable enough however. That being said, the trailer had me laughing so I'll probably be checking it.

I hope this doesn't turn out like Nacho Libre. A lot of people liked that movie and I was absolutely puzzled and perplexed as to why. I HATED the movie with a passion. I don't give out too many 0/10's and that is one of them. It's seriously one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life.

Borat doesn't look nearly as bad. Infact, it looks like it will be fairly funny. But not as funny as the hype suggests.

I'm not a big fan of Da Ali G Show, but Borat looks hilarious and I cannot wait to see it. I saw an exclusive 5-minute clip from the film this past summer, and it was hilarious, albeit very disturbing. Although I'm looking forward to this one, I'm not allowing the "hype machine" to raise my expectations to a sky-high level.

Just wondering if you have seen the movie you are calling crap mentiroso. Different strokes for different folks. We all know how subjective comedy is. I have no idea how someone could hate Borat, but to each their own. I think they are selling it this hard because Borat was part of a fairly obscure HBO show. That and the reviews have been through the roof so they are obviously trying to take advantage of that.

I just read this on IMDB and this sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!

British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's controversial new comedy movie has been cut from more than half the 2,000 US cinemas it was supposed to debut in this weekend over fears film fans won't get the comic's Borat character. In the film, Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Great Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan, Cohen plays an offensive Kazakhstan TV journalist trying to get to grips with life in America. The movie has already upset politicians in Kazakhstan, who insist the comedian's character paints a terrible picture of their country, and now film distributors in the US fear cinemagoers will find the movie more offensive than funny. The film was scheduled to open in 2,000 cinemas across America on Friday, but it will now bow in only 700. Movie executives at Twentieth Century Fox pulled the plug on the wide opening after the film tested poorly. Distribution official Bruce Snyder tells the Los Angeles Times newspaper, "Our research showed it was soft in awareness." Fox bosses hope to add cinemas a week after the film opens.

What is not to get??? It is a CHARACTER!!!!!! What happened to good ol fashioned comedy!?! Inspector Cluseau was a CHARACTER!!!! I hate the mass market idealists!!!!!

Ali G is possibly the least funny comedy character I have ever seen.

I have seen some Borat skits that I found funny (usually his character isn't actually that funny or even meant to be, but people's reactions are). I will give props to Cohen for being sooooo good at staying in character.

It reminds of Tony Clifton and Andy Kaufman, which is high praise.

I find him the opposite of funny - the character is EXTREMELY irritating. If you'd like to name one you think is worse, I'm all ears - it is certainly possible I'm just forgetting someone I've seen who is worse.

Edit to add: I may have spoken too soon. I watched a couple of interviews the character has done via YouTube, and while I didn't find them particularly funny, they were lot better than the other stuff I'd seen with the character, and I did crack a smile or two. ;)

The imdb article contradicts all word on the movie that we've seen so far. It has a 92% critic rating on RT with over 30 reviews so far, the screenings over the last 6 or so months have been very positive, the show has a good dedicated following, European BO should be fine since Cohen is popular there as well and the Kazakhstan government has even invited him to the country now (I guess they got the joke). The crowds going to see this are expecting to be offended I would think, Fox is probably wanting to pull another Little Miss Sunshine on this one.

Also, Yakov Smirnov is a lot less funny than Ali G/Borat/Bruno so saying he's the least is hardly true.

Yakov Smirnoff isn't really a character in the way that Ali G and Borat are. He's an actual guy, more or less, doing a standup routine.

I will say though that I've found the better Soviet Russia gags floating around on the internet (not ones which originate with Yakov, but hey) funnier than anything I've seen of Ali G.

Spoilers (if you can have spoilers for a movie like this)

Words cannot express how truly funny this movie is. Hilarious comes close, but the movie is beyond hilarious. The situations Borat gets involved in, and the way Sacha acts as Borat in them, are true cinematic gems. But Borat isnt what makes this movie. Its the people interacting with him, and their reactions to him, that make it so grand.

The movie is truly an intimate look into the American culture, how different people from different areas of our country, act and react to different people and situations. Like when Borat first "arrives" in America, and boards a subway train. He just tries to be nice and introduce himself to people, and everyone tells him to fuck off and get away from them. That proves right there that the term "America welcomes you with open arms) doesnt apply anymore. People want nothing to do with Borat because he is foreign and different.

Then Borat journeys into the region of America that honestly is a disgrace to our country: The South. The people he meets are beyond idiots. Like the rodeo owner who says, point blank on camera, gay people should be hung in public and that Borat should shave his mustache because he looks like a terrorist and that he (the rodeo owner) hates seeing people that look like Muslims (even though Borat is from Kazhakstan) because he is worried they have bombs strapped to their chests. Or the gun store owner who doesnt even hesitate to suggest what type of gun to use when Borat asks which would be good to kill a Jew with.

This movie speaks volumes as to how people in this country truly feel about the rest of the world, and even people here. Like when Borat is introduced at the Rodeo and says that he supports the war on terror, and everyone cheers, but then he sings (even though its all made up) the Kazahkstan national anthem to the tune of OUR national anthem, and immediately gets booed out of the building. Or when he hitchhikes and gets a ride from some USC students in an RV on a road trip somewhere. The boys and Borat drink, but then the truth comes out. One of the boys feels that America would be a better country if we had slaves, and the others feel that women are nothing more than a fuck because they dont deserve a mans respect.

Sure, I laughed my ass off at the movie, but most of the time I was sitting there, thinking to myself 'wow, I honestly cannot believe how small minded and ignorant most people in this country are. this is amazing."

Sacha Baron Cohen has done a wonderful thing with this film. Sure, its supposed to be a Mockumentary, but in all actuality, its a real documentary. A documentary on America and its people and how fucked up of a country we truly are. Most of the time in America we ignore all things, but this movie exposes how people truly feel and how they are, and it puts it all right there out in the open, where you are unable to ignore it and instead have to take it in and think about it.

But, it has to be seen to be fully believed. So go see it. See for yourself how funny it is and how brutally real it is.

I think it may be a case where less is good (as the studios see it). They can open it smaller and create more of a desire to see it, and then as the release gets wider and wider, word of mouth will drive more people who are in a frenzy to see it. I'm not agreeing with the tactic, but it does make sense in a business way. More reward, less risk.

Most of the movie is genuine, with unsuspecting people not knowing how to act around this weird guy, but there are also a number of scripted scenes. Thankfully, these scripted scenes are equally hilarious, and help the film to feel more like an actual movie instead of just a number of random sketches. Also, the actors are limited - it's obvious Cohen and the producer character are in on the joke (as is the fat prostitute that appears halfway through), but most everybody else has no idea (either that, or those are some GREAT actors).

There was only one scene I didn't like in the film - it has to do with Cohen "accidentally" destroying a bunch of items in a collectibles store. It's one thing to test people's sensibilities and patience through conversation and boundary issues... but that scene just felt mean for the sake of being mean. Oh well, that's a minor quibble.

The rest of the film is almost flawless. Cohen manages to reveal much about people's true nature, and I found it so funny that the people who came across as the most intelligent and mild mannered were the ones that the character Borat was so prejudice against. Meanwhile, the level of stupidity in America can be seen through bigoted southerners, completely moronic frat boys, and many others.

Great, great movie. An easy 9 OUT OF 10.

Cohen isloates the situations, scripted or none scripted, and exploits them for what they are. He shows another side of America that isn't shown in the print or on Televison. He goes over the line so far that he doesn't come back to it, ever. This movie made me belly laugh with such vigor that I feel whatever comedy that I watch afterwards will have little or no effect to me. That is why I love improv. You can do almost anything and it could stick or fail as a joke, but some jokes in this movie were dead on and never stopped making you laugh. The only movie that has been consistantly funny next to this is Clerks 2 and Cohen is going to be a phenomon for years to come and he is going to be the next comedy star of the decade or possibly the next Will Fereall or Jim Carrey because they have simlarities in common that are so eerie. They all can make a character last and make it stick with you. Borat is one of the year's finest movies, and one of the best comedies in a long period of time.

this is one of the greatest comedies i have ever seen.

The scene with the naked wrestling, that was the longest laughing period i have ever been privy to in my entire history of going to the movies... i saw the midnight show on Thursday.. and there was 1 showing at 12:01 am... and it was sold out ( i got there at 10:30.. already sold out) so they added another theater with the same 12:01 showing, and i got my ticket and when it was all said and done, the theater was sold out! for a midnight show (Granted when i go to midnight shows i go to the AMC movie theater that is at Universal Studios Florida)

This movie did not let up in how fuckin hilarious it was!

I have been a fan of Sacha Baron Cohen for a while now, ever since i first saw Ali G, and i have loved every episode he did of that, and i loved Ali G: Indahouse movie, i thought that was hilarious, but none of that touches this flick. I look forward to what they do with the BRUNO movie, as Universal just shelled out over 42 million dollars for the rights to it.

Scaling the showings back to 800 screens was stupid yet genius, in what i read was: they are going to eventually release it on a normal nationwide number of screens after they let word of mouth build for it... so HOPEFULLY we will see this movie sticking around the Top 5 for a while.

The thing about Sacha Baron Cohen that i love, but also hate.. is... im sure to the normal viewer (not movie dorks like us) people dont know that he was the voice of the muskrat or whatever in MADAGASCAR or that he was the french gay dude in Talladega Nights.. and for people that STILL arent familiar with the show, i doubt that they get the FULL experience of this flick, because they are thinking thsi is a full on scripted movie, just done weirdly.. not knowing that it is Sacha Baron Cohen playing Borat all over America to unsuspecting people, and that for the most part, the people arent in on the gag! (Sept i truly believe Pamela Anderson had to have been in on it)!

That is a great theater. My family and I vacationed in Orlando last December and we had time to kill before we went into Universal Studios because we were waiting till mid-afternoon to go in so that the crowds would die down a little, so we ate lunch at Hard Rock Cafe and then saw 'Fun With Dick & Jane' at the theater. I loved everything about it. The place is huge, multi-floored, I loved how they had old posters of great movies up all over the place, the theater itself was massive, the sound was excellent and I loved how the seats reclined when you sat down. Hands down, best theater I've ever been in.

I just got back form seeing Borat and I can say that I was not dissappointed. If you are a fan of Borat's skits from the Ali G show then you will love the movie but if you did not like the stuff from the Ali G show this movie is probably not for you.

I can say that I have never attended a movie where the crowd laughed so much and almost everything in the movie worked to perfection. The scene at the bed and breakfast and the nude wrestling scene were two of the funniest scenes I have ever seen and the joke about why Borat and Azamat did not fly to LA was funny but so wrong. My only complaint is that it was not long enough. The 85 minutes breezed by and I would have loved another 10-15 minutes of Borat.

So I just got out of watching borat. I can't believe you people thought that movie was that good. Sure it was pretty funny at times, I laughed my ****ing ass off, but that doesn't make it the funniest movie of all time. Anybody who knows anything could tell that almost 90% of that movie was completely set up and really do you think that they were able to get a camera behind the counter of lot of those stores without anybody noticing.

Spoilers

If any of you people think that the scene where they abduct Pamela Anderson is real, you must have a serious head . If she was really abducted you would have heard news of it. Everywhere people woul have been talking about it and it would have been in most of the really lame ass magazines that my wife reads.

End of spoilers

Overall I give the movie an eight out of 10 because it did make me laugh quite a few times but funniest movie of all time I don't think so. I don't know if it's because the movie was hyped so much. But I just didn't see what everybody was talking about, but then again, that's me. Invader Zim.

Oh by the way, I haven't touched a keyboard whole time. I bought this new program Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 is so crazy I had a headset with it only cost me $100. And now all I have to do is talk and appears in the screen pretty ****ing sick.

Uh, it was obvious which scenes were set up and which scenes weren't. 90%? No way. Maybe 1/3 of the movie was scripted, and those scenes were still hilarious.

Here are ones that were obviously scripted:
+ All the scenes with Borat by himself
+ All the scenes with Borat and the producer
+ All the scenes with Borat and the fat prostitute
+ The scenes in the very beginning and end
+ *SPOILER* The Pamela Anderson scene
+ and maybe the frat boys scene... just maybe...

But that was it.

And also, the reason people are saying this movie is one of the funniest of all time is because it is.

The only time I've ever laughed as hard as I did during BORAT was when I saw JACKASS NUMBER TWO, but that wasn't even a real movie (granted, BORAT isn't the best example for an actual film either).

EDIT: You know, come to think of it, I may have laughed almost as much during CLERKS 2. And BATTLEFIELD EARTH...

I think the words I used to describe the movie were a little harsh, but do you really think there was only one third that was scripted. You have to start thinking about the situations he was in, angles that were filmed, and the subject matter being discussed. I know a lot of people really did enjoy this movie and I'm not trying to knock that even though it sounds like it was. If you even could make me budge from 90%, a little bit, the farthest I would go down is to 85%

Jackass number two, Borat, clerks 2. Those movies don't even deserve to be in the same category as the big Lebowski, fear and loathing in Las Vegas, and true classics like Cheech and Chong's up in smoke.

That's ridiculous. I don't even feel like arguing about it any more, but I'll just say I'm pretty certain you're wrong.

And what the hell do the movies you listed have anything to do with what I was talking about?

THE BIG LEBOWSKI and FEAR AND LOATHING are fantastic movies, but they aren't even close to being the funniest ever made.

You're making it sound like I'm talking about the best comedies ever made, or just best movies in general - I'm not. I'm talking about the funniest; as in, laugh per minute ratio. In that sense, BORAT is easily one of the funniest movies ever made.

Funniest movie I have ever seen. I'm not even joking! I seriously did not expect to laugh so hard for so samn long. I could not breath through half the movie. The scene where Borat and the Producer in the elderly Jewish couples house was so politically incorrect and hilarious I couldnt stand it it was so funny. And yes, the nude wrestling scene was probably the funniest damn thing I ever saw....hate to say it but it was.

I was never bored, and the jokes never fell flat or seemed redundant.

9.5/10 one of the funniest movies ever made. Seriously.

Heres a question: was anyone elses theater silent during the end credits?

And I dont mean the crowd, I meant like "no music or any sound at all" being played during the credits. When the credits started, I heard a real small clip of music and the screen said 'Please Stand for Kazhak National Anthem' and then the theater cut the sound. I sat all the way through the end credits, just to see if there was anything post credits, and there wasnt, but it was weird sitting in a theater with complete silence. I have a feeling that the national anthem was actually played and that the theater I was in censored it, which, if so, pisses me off.

SOME SPOILERS

Yeah, I suppose I shouldve elaborated. I never had an honest want to see the movie to begin with, but I got talked into it by a friend. That said, I had always found Borat immensely irritating since the trailer first hit (I had never encountered the skits that birthed the movie, the most I knew of Sacha was the french dude in Ricky Bobby and the Lemur in Madagascar), and coming out of the movie thats what I thought, he was annoying and loud, with a few laughs but not nearly enough for me. The parts of the movie I did like were the "real people" sections (though one could argue the validity of those), the stuff with the college students in the RV, the guy he meets before the rodeo, the church, I was cool with all that, but the plot they interjected in the film I thought was boring as all hell. It didnt interest me one bit, and that made the time in the film they did spend on it feel really long to me, I was surprised to learn the run time was 82 mintues, the Pamela anderson thing and the "cultural learnings of america thing" just felt real blah to me. And, I certainly wasnt feelin naked man wrestling with Azmat, dear lord. But hey, to each his own, I certainley wasnt feeling Borat but a lot of people really are and thats cool, I'm not at all intending to knock anybody for it. As for Jackass 2, I dug it, but it has seriously no rewatch value, and it also had some fairly disturbing things. Did I laugh more than Borat, if thats what you're getting at, yeah. But I didnt sing its praises to the heavens either. I generally like a darker, dryer kind of comedy, movies this year like The Chumscrubber, Thank You For Smoking, and Slither were a lot more my thing. But, I will say, I enjoyed the hell out of Grandma's Boy...

I haven't had that much fun at a movie in awhile. Packed theater and everyone seemed to enjoy it. I don't think it would be as enjoayble for those who don't have a light sense of humor. Even if it was all "scripted" I don't care. Its a movie. I had a great time and I couldn't of asked for more. I honestly didn't think it was possible to laugh through 90% of a movie, figuring the jokes would be repetitive or maybe just too many gimmicks..

..but I did. I laughed hard, and out loud, probably too loud at some parts. I was in tears during the whole hotel wrestling ordeal, even if it was scripted. I laughed and I had a great time. Worth the money if you are in for a good laugh.

10 out of 10. I've never laughed so hard.

Yeah, me too. Hilarious stuff.

Although I was a bit disappointed they didn't include the two scenes from the trailer that involved him taking pictures of some chap in a public restroom, and one that apparently showed him at a Civil War re-enactment.

Don't get me wrong, though, the film is hysterical, especially the bit at the beginning that featured "footage" of the Running of the Jew '04. Altough I wonder if I should feel bad for laughing at stuff like that.

Very good points Double-Oh. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard during a movie or after one. The "Bed & Breakfast" scene had me in absolute tears and then the naked wrestling was just about the breaking point for me where I thought my spleen would explode from me laughing so hard. Ehh, they're much too different to even compare. Different type of humor, different type of style, different type of movie altogether...

It really depends on what you're looking for. But you're right in saying that FEAR AND LOATHING is a much more "quality" production. I would also say it's smarter, but that's debatable.

And I personally liked BORAT way more than JACKASS 2. Even in terms of laughs per minute, I think BORAT has JACKASS beat. Keep in mind though that I absolutely loved the latter as well, giving it a 9 out of 10.

While I wouldn't call it one of the funniest movies ever made (seeing as how I don't consider JACKASS to be a real movie), it did deliver above and beyond what it had promised. On a movie scale, you can't really give it any more than a 6 or something - but by its own merit (possibly on an "extended TV show" scale?), it's an easy 9 out of 10.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan – Rating: 9/10

After months of waiting for the Borat movie, seeing it I began to think of it as the antithesis of the tagline for Easy Rider: “they went looking for America but couldn’t find it anywhere.” Borat Sagdiyev goes looking for Pamela Anderson in California and finds America along the way through intolerance, prostitution, lessons in fine dining and so much more. Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen) is a journalist from Kazakhstan, and lives in a town where his sister is the “number four prostitute in all of Kazakhstan” with a trophy to prove it, the oldest woman is 43, and the town has its own rapist. Sent to America to make a “movie film” or documentary, his all New York filming schedule is set off keel when he sees an episode of Baywatch in his hotel and falls in love with Pamela Anderson. Pledging to marry her, Borat makes revisions for his plans and hops in an ice cream truck with his producer Azamat Bogatov (Ken Davitian) and heads for California. So begins this wacky, incredibly funny in the most twisted way trip through the heart of America.

The kicker here is that Borat’s documentary is part of Larry Charles mockumentary where you either get it or you don’t. Cohen, who created the character on his television show Da Ali G Show, knows exactly what’s going on through Borat and uses those trying to teach him about America as targets for us to laugh at. His ability for improvisation is almost relentless to a fault, causing so much laughing to ensue that I feared missing other jokes. Rarely do I find myself in a theater full of people so enthusiastic about such outrageous comedic anarchy, happily yelping with laughter. Borat hops on an unsuspecting group of feminists and tells them that his town doctor has discovered a woman’s brain is smaller than that of a man through a medical procedure. Their outrage at such an incredibly blunt claim is just another way Cohen keeps us entertained for all of Borat’s claims come from a Kazakhstan point of view, a country where women are completely inferior. He is able to push the buttons of the America people so ferociously and at such a pace that seeing their bewilderment and confusion in his words and actions is only half the fun. Even scenes intentionally staged (sometimes it’s hard to tell, other times easy) to move the story along employ short, well timed comedic jabs, many points having me believe there would be no break longer than 10 seconds for me to catch my breath. There seems to be no rhyme and reason but it still flows freely so well from one point to the next. It’s so stupid, but so intelligent.

But what about Borat not as just a wild comedy, but as a reflection of America viewed by someone who claims to know nothing about it? Maybe it is a bit cruel on the part of Cohen to take such advantage of those trying to help him assimilate into American culture, but even this has a counterpoint in the film. Traveling across America it seems we are a place where intolerance proudly runs rampant. This may not be a shock to a great many, but seeing it on the screen state to state, person to person, it is almost unbelievable. Southerners support the idea of and live on Secession Drive, rodeo cowboys see gays as fairies that float around and even frat boys are avid supporters of slavery. Is our message of “Give us your tired, your poor, your hungry, your huddled masses yearning to be free” just a facade? Even Borat’s attempts to introduce himself are met many times with callous threats of physical violence.

The most notorious target for Cohen’s character is the Jewish people. He claims that “although Kazakhstan is a glorious country, it have problem too: social, economic and Jew.” Anti-Semitism runs wild in the film and though many other groups are prone to abuse in the film (gypsies, women etc.) many may find themselves constantly offended by the material against Jews. The fact remains though that Cohen himself is a Jew and even though the Anti-Defamation league acknowledges this, they are teeming with “fear that people will not get it” and that their bigotry will only be reinforced. Personally, I see no wrong in the vehement, offensive Jewish jokes not because I am anti-Semitic (I am of course, not) but because it contributes to the realism of the Borat character and the show he is putting on for us. Maybe the oppressed roles of women and the hating of Jews have clouded the way a real Borat type person would be able to see the lack of consistent acceptance in America. So yes, Borat is offensive as you’ve heard but it is for sake of smart comedy and not without merit or reason.

At a breakneck 84 minutes, spoiling anything about Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan would be spoiling a lot. It’s hard to explain the humor and wit of Borat without playing the spoiler for it simply comes down to a certain level of understanding the character. Cohen as a writer, actor and comedian has crafted a high wire comedy act where the sky never seems to be the limit, and where satire and slap stick are gleefully united like family. The situations he puts himself in are so uncomfortable to watch but at the same time so engrossing, I found myself amazed at his ability to carry himself in the different scenarios. There’s so much to behold in Borat that at times Cohen seemed so immersed in the character that I forgot this was all just a joke to him. Hyped? Yes. Offensive? Yes. Creative? Yes. One of the best comedies of the past few years? I’d have to say yes to that as well. As they sometimes say, see it to believe it.

Such name calling and tomato throwing. While I will admit that we have some pretty ignorant bastards who run around the south, you northerners are not really off the hook. I think you guys forget that the north are responsable for some awful shit. First and most embarrassing you guys are responsible for West Virginia and all her inbreeding, back woods, racist, ignorant glory. You see it in June 20, 1863 West Virginia broke off of Virginia to join the union. Isn’t that nice. Wikipedia it, you will find that in 2005 the majority of the population an outstanding 95.99%. Integration! I also know folks from West Virginia who are nice, normal, PC as all hell Americans just like any other rational person. Granted most of them only live there because it is cheaper to buy a house out there and drive to their jobs in DC, sacrificing really only gas money and their children’s education. Way to go the north!

Then there is Maryland. Ah Chesapeake Bay Crab cakes, Yum! Oh and they also were unaffected by the Emancipation Proclamation along with Delaware, Missouri, and Kentucky. Equality Yay! Take a drive through Fredrick County Maryland and other more western parts of Maryland. Tell me how many Stars and Bars you can count. Maryland, another Northern state. Teehee!

Lets have fun with hate crimes! Hate crimes in 2004 according to the FBI on their website as linked by Wikipedia. Alabama 3, Arizona 19, Arkansas a shameful 50, Florida not much better with 95, Georgia was at 7, Kentucky hanging in there with 32, Louisiana a piddly 12, North Carolina 35, South Carolina 51, Tennessee with 68, Texas trying to beat Florida with 84 comes up a little short, My state of Virginia has 68.

Boy those southern state really love to hate, I bet it the northern or more accurately the northern and other non southern states would be much better at this game, hell I bet somebody could beat Alabama’s score of 3.

There is! Alaska with only 1 hate crime. Damn that Canadian on Inuit crime. The no south wins for least amount of hate crimes! Drop the balloons and confetti. Well lets move on to the next state of note California with barely any… uh oh. Um maybe I shouldn’t say. California is kinda a hub for political correctness and fairness. You’re sure you want to know, ok, California 245 hate crimes.wow damn it has to get better from here. Delaware with 11, Idaho at 12, Illinois 48, Maine 29, Maryland 32, Massachusetts 90, Michigan with a shocking 172, New Hampshire 29, What about good old New Jersey oh 249 the most on the list! New York with 42, Ohio 74, Pennsylvania 34, West Virginia with 12.

I think the non south is the clear winner here. Most hate crimes in 2004! My point is. Everyone sucks! Take the plank out of your eye before you pluck the splinter from your neighbors. Borat was funny.

This movie is hilarious, but it's far from perfect. The premise of the movie is simple; a journalist from Kazakhstan, that would be Borat, is sent to the U.S. to do a documentary about American culture. The scenes where Borat is "learning" about the U.S., interacting with real life people - who apparently were not in the know that this guy is a fictional character - are hysterical. From Southern "classy" people, feminists, a driving instructor, and more - Sacha Baron Cohen doesn't hold back as far as the insults, creative ideas, and just over the top situations that he presents to these real life people. These moments alone are worth the price of admission.

Unfortunately, the movie is bogged down by a really dumb plot. Borat treks cross country, on all these "adventures," because he's fallen in love with someone he saw on TV. So he and his obese producer go from New York to California, stopping in major cities to continue their documentary, so he can find his love and marry her. When the movie stops the bits with regular people to focus on this point, it's lame, unfunny, and boring. Not to mention that the plot's conclusion is a far cry from special as well.

There are also several things in the movie I could've done without: for starters - the two guys fighting . . . naked, one of them a rather large man. The scene was not funny but rather gross. Plus it was obviously staged and choreographed as the two gentlemen wound up in rather unique positions. It was meant as crude gag, but I wasn't laughing. Other things that turned me off were the anti-Semitic jokes, and other offensive stabs at particular groups. I'm not Jewish or a feminist for that matter, but it was too obvious that they were searching for a few extra jokes at groups' expense and I just don't find that kind of stuff funny.

The only reason to watch this movie is for the situations Borat goes through for the purpose of the documentary. The extra plot they throw in there and all story elements connected to said plot slow the movie down humor-wise. The ending is nothing to brag about, but it does take away from the fact that Borat is hilarious when dealing with the real people.

Borat's run is utterly insane.

Let's say it makes $35 million this weekend.

1 - $26.5 m
2 - $35 m
3 - $26.3 m; -25%
4 - $22.3 m; -15%
5 - $13.9 m; -37.5%
6 - $10.5 m; -25%
7 - $7.8 m; -25%
8 - $5.9 m; -25%; $148.2
9 - $7.4 m; +25%; $155.6
10 - $5.2 m; -30%; $160.8
11 - $3.9 m; -25%; $164.7

It wouldn't have a weekend under $5 million until January. Factor in weekdays and it would easily cross Wedding Crashers.

Borat - 7/10 or ***1/2/***** stars

What prevents Borat from earning the title of "the year's best comedy" is its weak subplot involving Pamela Anderson, which is unnecessary and throws the original concept (i.e. Borat coming to America to learn about the country and attempt to Americanize himself) to the wayside, as well as the fact that the film, like many comedies released nowadays, slows down towards the end and, in terms of laughs, is rather dry. Having said that, Borat is a funny, entertaining comedy nonetheless, with several hilarious lines and scenes (including one particular scene that will make viewers turn their eyes away and sprawl on the floor laughing simultaneously) sprinkled throughout. If possible, Sacha Baron Cohen should consider a second low-budget Borat film, as the thought of the titular character going on another crazy adventure sounds like fun.

*SPOILERS*

So I'm sure most of you have heard about this movie or have seen the trailers for it... Borat is the main character played by Englishman Sacha Baron Cohen, he's a news reporter from the country of Kazakhistan who takes a cross-country trip with with his friend Azamat in search of his "love" Pamela Anderson (from watching a Baywatch episode)....

This movie was pretty fucking hilarious! Borat has such an innocense about him, and he's subtely insulting everyone he comes in contact with, in an attempt to learn the "american culture"... He manages to insult everyone from Jews, to black people, prostitutes, religious freaks, feminists and southerners....

The highlight of the movie is a naked fight scene he has with his friend Azamat (who's at LEAST 350+ pounds) in a hotel room, and running throughout the building, etc. just fucking HILARIOUS.... I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe at one point! :D

Another highlight was his blatant insulting of the dumbass american "patriotism" that's pretty popular in the bible belt, and the pro war-mongering assholes that inhabit it, when he delivers a "pro-war speach" and then sings HIS countrie's National Anthem to the tune of the american one... I must've been the only one in the whole theatre laughing my ASS off at that shit! :D

If you're the type of person who's offended easily or who gets sick easily (the naked fight is pretty revolting, which makes it THAT more fucking hilarious in my mind) then I would say to skip it... If you're like me, and actually want to fucking LAUGH atta recent comedy movie, and find NOTHING to be offensive, then you should definitely enjoy this one! :)

It was very funny.

"In my country, men would go crazy for women like this... her not so much."

Funniest movie ever? No, don't be silly. It's not even the funniest movie of this year (that would be Strangers With Candy).

I just can't see myself laughing at this five-ten years from now the way I still laugh at something like Airplane or South Park.

And after only an hour and twenty minutes or so, Borat was grating on me. It was still funny, but I almost wished it was ten minutes shorter. Like the antique shop scene. Just not really funny.

Running of the Jews = awesome.

I agree that this wasn't even the funniest movie this year - though I'd probably go with Clerks 2 or Thank You For Smoking. :D

I think the funniest movies ever had better stories and plotlines to go with the jokes - even better, the movies had better jokes to go with the stories too. The whole going after Pamela Anderson bit is lame and sounds like something out of a TV sitcom. Anytime Borat wasn't "messing" with real people and focused on that part of the story, I tuned out.

I hyped myself too much for this, thinking it was going to be out of this world hilarious and yeah assuming it would be close to the funniest movie ive ever seen...the problem is i over-hyped it and my expectations were way too high even for Cohen...
nevertheless, its definately the funniest movie of the year, and i haven't laughed like that in a loooooong while in the cinema, Cohen is a genius hands down, and he's a great fucking actor! (that tends to be overshadowed by the comedy but there were a few scenes where he really shined)
8.5/10....lengthier review will come soon enough but for now i want to comment on this:

I wouldnt exactly say the 'true' americans but yeah i get what you mean and i agree. I think that was one of the major reasons why Cohen did this movie. I'm thinking specifically of the Rodeo guy, the Rodeo audience, and the boys in the van (and more on a subtler level)... making
"U.S. and A, greatest nation in the world!!" one of, if not the, most ironically hilarious phrases from the film.

Those college guys were so mean. I was laughing so hard because that is how a lot of the guys that are popular and think their tough act. I always got along with those people, but I would have hit them if they started on me.

Him going to see Ms. Anderson was great.

A truly good movie.

9/10

you're saying they weren't true americans?
bah i hate using the word true, but i loved how through the character of Borat he exposed a lot of things the americans like to hide but that is nevertheless very much there

Who needs Borat? We got Mel Gibson and Michael Richards. I don't think a guy playing a role for three drunk ass college students shows the true side of Americans. They're frat boys from South Carolina, and they speak for all Americans?

Yes. Damn Americans. If only they didnt share a hive mind.....

He could take the BORAT character anywhere and poke fun at anyone im thinking. I think it was pretty obvious he picked and chose his targets to often hilarious results.

wasn't really talking about the frat boys although they are part of it, not all Americans but the majority of American male college students yeah I would say..
Mel Gibson and Michael Richards are celebrities who appologized immediately after and now they're blacklisted as "crazy" and will be the subjects for many comedians...they hardly represent America...

his targets were regular average Joes in America, wouldn't be nearly as funny if it was anywhere else

Yeah, Borat didn't expose the 'true Americans,' but he ripped apart the 'America #1' BS people think about. America's filled with just as many idiots and prejudices as any other country on the planet.

Canadians call bacon bacon in case you don't know.

That's exactly my point,

Heh, I haven't met a person yet who had something bad to say about Canada (not including stupid insults concerning their accents, history or bacon (lol) that's just for jokes anyways) but where I live it's pretty chilled and very open-minded :D probably coz it's more like Europe than North America :p

*awaiting the flames*

Needless to say, there was a reason why Borat chose the States and not Canada ;)

Saw this again last week and changed my mind. Still not as good as Clerks II, but I did find it funnier than Jackass Number Two. I now give it a 10/10 after something hitting me and telling me that this is completely genious and absolutely hilarious. I cannot wait until this comes out on DVD, I may even see it again for a third time.
