After seeing Waking Life, I have seen all of what I know to be Linklater's "Linklater-esque" films , and it's been really interesting seeing all of them, each one uniquely using his style of making incredibly natural sometimes somewhat plotless films that work because of the interesting dialogue between the usually several characters in each film. So what is your favorite of his somewhat the same yet somewhat different films?

For me it goes:
1. Before Sunset - 10/10
2. Waking Life - 9/10
3. Before Sunrise - 9/10
4. Tape - 9/10
5. Dazed and Confused - 9/10
6. Slacker - 8/10

I love Before Sunset the most because I find it to be his film that best mixes plot with interesting conversations. I found the plot more interesting because after seeing Before Sunrise, I couldn't wait to see what happened when they met again, if it would be akward, if they still thought of eachother, if they still loved eachother. I wish I had seen both of these when they came out, mostly because they were actually released about as far apart as they are supposed to take place. That way, I could've felt almost like they did, and thought just what they did, "Will they feel the same as last time?" Another part of this film that I love is the theme, that true love lasts forever, and I think that this film portrays this theme perfectly, showing that years apart, a marriage, and even a child couldn't get in the way of the two character's love for eachother, even if that love was spawned from just one night together.

1.) Dazed and Confused -9/10
2.) A Scanner Darkly -9/10
3.) Waking Life -9/10
4.) Tape -8/10
5.) SubUrbia -8/10
6.) Before Sunset -8/10
7.) Before Sunrise -8/10
8.) Slacker -7/10

Dazed isn't actually his best, but it's a big sentimental favorite for me and an endlessly enjoyable picture. Also, SubUrbia is signature Linklater, it should be on that list.

Of those I have only seen Before Sunrise and Dazed and Confused. I liked Before Sunrise but I didn't care for Dazed and Confused.

But my favorite movie from Linklater is not on the poll. That would be The School of Rock.

1. School of Rock 7/10
2. The Bad News Bears 7/10
3. Before Sunrise 7/10
4. The Newton Boys 7/10
5. Dazed and Confused 5/10

Linklater is one of my favorite directors to come out of the 90's. Few take on as wide a variety of projects as he does, from the arthouse appeal of Waking Life to the mainstream comedy of School of Rock to the mature romanticism of Before Sunrise and its sequel, he excels in every genre he tries out. There's not many more versatile directors out there right now.

1. Before Sunrise- ****
2. Before Sunset- ****
3. Waking Life- *** 1/2
4. Dazed and Confused- *** 1/2
5. Slacker- *** 1/2
6. The School of Rock- *** 1/2
7. Bad News Bears- ***

I really need to see Tape, and I'm really interested in A Scanner Darkly as well.

The poll and thread were meant to be for what I consider his "signature films", which is why School of Rock, The Bad News Bears, The Newton Boys, A Scanner Darkly, and all his other films aren't on the list, because, as far as I know, they aren't made with the same dialogue-driven script like the films on the poll. Sorry if that wasn't made clear.

Dazed and Confused undeniably. I also liked School of Rock even though that's not in the poll.

Dazed and Confused is great, but I gotta go with A Scanner Darkly. You can't beat Robert Downey Jr.'s performance!

Although apparently no one else has seen it (c'mon guys, Giovanni Ribisi, Nicky Katt, Parker Posey, and an excellent Steve Zahn from a script by Eric Bogosian), SubUrbia is very much in the signature style of Linklater and is most similar to Dazed and Confused or Tape in that a small group of character's endless conversations are followed while little plot-wise goes on. It belongs on the list.

Geez, I dunno, how can a movie directed by Richard Linklater film be Linklater-esque? It's like in "THe Squid and the Whale": "It's very Kafka-esque."

Yeah, my friend told me about SubUrbia and I don't really know why I didn't put it on there. Maybe I didn't see it on the imdb list when I made the poll.

I used to watch SubUrbia all the time when I was in high school. Good movie. It's been a while since I've seenit and I have to admit, I didn't even know Linklater directed it.

Good movie though...
