I am so tired of Blockbuster. Every 3 or so months I reactivate my unlimited monthly movie pass for a month. And in that month I try to rent all the latest movies that were released the past 3 months. So in total I rent about 30 to 50 movies in that span.
But the thing that pisses me off is that when I rented Underworld Evaluation (to name one of many) and sat down to view it later that night it start to get pixilated about 20 minutes in.
When I returned to and informed that clerk she said “well sir since you have the movie pass just re-rent a different copy.
So I responded fine, thinking I can rent my next to (2) DVD and a re-rent the damage one also dvd; a total of (3) dvd’s
When I got to check out counter she said that will be $4.50 sir and I said why?
Clerk – you have a total of 3 movies the movie pass cover 2
Me -- you said I can re-rent underworld b/c the movie was damage
Clerk – yes I did but a re-rent counts toward your movie pass
ME -- What, why must I use my movie pass to rent a movie I rented yesterday and could
not view it b/c it was damage.?
ME -- I should get a free rental b/c i used my movie pass to rent a damage movie
(In essence i only rented 1)
Clerk – Sir it is not costing you anything to re-rent this movie again b/c you have the
monthly movie pass.
Me -- Yes it is, it is costing me 1 title now b/c if i want to still watch UW that has to 1 of
the 2 movies i select today.
I could see i was not going to win this battle so i took Underworld and A Sound of Thunder.
And guest what UW was great BUT A Sound of Thunder started to Pixilated.
FUC3 blockbuster.

Being that I presently work for Blockbuster, and have worked for Hollywood in the past, that’s just how it works in the rental industry.
If you’re on the two out movie pass you can only rent two prepaid movies at a time using that program; any other DVD needs to be paid for when you check out just as if you were a standard member.
From what I understand, everybody does the same thing (i.e. blockbuster, hollywood etc.). Blockbuster usually doesn't give out a free DVD for pass-members when they can easily come into the store and switch for a new copy. That’s why you pay for unlimited free rentals, because it’s limitless on how many times your allowed to rent two, or one, movies on the pass.
If the DVD doesn’t work when you put it into your DVD player, take it back to the store that same day, and get a better copy. It’s really not that hard. And being that you’re on the movie pass, I’m sure you have enough free time on your hands to come back to the store and do that.
Besides, from your quote, she told you to re-rent the movie using your pass, and she never said anything about a free DVD, so I don’t understand where your anger/confusion stems from.

Strange, I've never had a negative experience like that at Blockbuster (or Hollywood Video). The only time I ever squabbed with a video store was at this one small, local place. Must be a Wisconsin thing.

I can see both sides to this argument, but ultimately would give the nudge to the consumer because even though you aint losing out because you have the movie pass, it is costing you in gas/bus fare to the store to re rent the same movie. But these days, these big CON-glomerates could care less about customer satisfaction. Guaranteed if that was a mom & pop, you'd be walking out with 3 movies.

It’s not that we don’t care... but we have high standards at blockbuster, we only give out free rentals when either the costumer is obviously pissed and we want them to shut the fuck up, or because they actually deserve a free rental (which happens all the time, just not in this case).
It’s hard to understand my position, I know. People try to swindle me into giving them free shit every day, people do it to all of us... so in order to maintain those “high standards”, there are rules I have to follow. Rules like I’ve already explained in my above post.
And you’re throwing gas fair into the mix? Whatever. If people are that anal about money, then they wouldn’t fork out $27 a month on movies. It’s that simple.

The video store I worked at had rules for giving out free rentals. One rule was that after 4 hours of rental your SOL. We would get people comeing in the next day saying their movie fucked up and wanted a free one. Well we would say we would review the movie and place a credit in their account and most would say nvm and walk away.
They wanted a free movie right away, which we used to do and find out there was nothing wrong with the movie, so that's why we changed policy. if they said nvm and walked away, if we found out that something was wrong they wouldn't get anything, they had to say ok to the review so they knew that we are going to be going into the account. And also so we could call them (if we chose to) to let them know that the movie worked or didn't.
And we would watch the movie unaltered, meaning we didn't clean the disc before reviewing it. We would clean it after we found out if it was or wasn't defective and try again.

So what you’re saying is that if you went to Red lobster for an All-U-Can eat Shrimp deal.
And just as you were going to request a second helping of shrimp the manager tells you that their sorry but the shrimp is no longer available b/c they ran out/is was spoiled.
Then he said if you’re still hungry you can order their $19.99 King Crab Leg Dish.
And when you tell him that you should receive this Crab Dish for free; he responds by saying; well you eat the bread, enjoyed 2 refills of lemonade and eat the first helping of shrimp so you already got your money’s worth.
I guess you would react kindly?

I also find it funny that this poster claims to have "high standards" but then says they'll give out a free rental just so the customer "will shut the fuck up"
So basically, you could care less about a legit gripe unless someone throws a tantrum in your store, then you'll give them a free rental just to shut them the fuck up (your words) as opposed to a customer who trys to use reason and an even tone?
Man, this just reniforces why I dont use Blockbuster and never thought much of their staff (as a whole) Apologies to the BB staff who actually care.

Wow. so sorry for trying to avoid a bad situation by giving into the costumers demands... how absolutely horrible of me...
and I can still have high standards and be an asshole at the same time... its not THAT hard.

Yeah, basically. But you’re the type of person who believes that a costumer should get a free rental no matter what. Or, at least that’s how you sound. And mind you, I was referring to PASS MEMBERS, and PASS MEMBERS only. Not standard costumers. That’s a whole different ballgame.
I don’t think you got the gist of my previous explanation, so I’ll repost it for you:
If you’re on the two out movie pass you can only rent two prepaid movies at a time using that program; any other DVD needs to be paid for when you check out just as if you were a standard member.

You’re trying to make me look bad by painting me in a bad light, and it's not going to work. And besides your bad generalization, your effort to demoralize my character is moot one because of your apparent grudge against people with a sense of business ethics. And sticking with your 'he just doesn't care' method of argument is just silly, mainly because you're trying to relate the way I feel to the way i act, which are two completely separate things.
And besides all this mumbo jumbo. Giving into costumer demands IS good costumer service. You’re giving them what they want, and there’s no more of an accurate description of the phrase. Even if I’m just doing it so they’ll stop yelling at me, or the way I like to put it, so they’ll shut the fuck up, they’re getting what they want.
You can hate blockbuster all you want, I really don’t fucking care... that just means I have one less costumer coming to my store who thinks he knows how to work my job.
Yay for me.

I've always been down with Blockbuster. I sometimes wonder if I have the only decent Blockbuster in the world located near me though. All the employees seem cool and seem to have a decent knowledge of movies and games. They don't hassle me about all the deals they have going on. Hell they've even taken in a couple of games and movies of mine as trade ins that were in questionable shape at best. Yeah it sucks for the people that buy them, but it worded out well for me. Nearly everytime I hear a customer bitch while waiting in line it's so completely on them and not on the store.
But then again my family owns a small pizza/convencice store that also rents movies. Seeing the damage jackasses do to DVD's and the pitiful excuses they come up with tend to lead me to side with the business in most cases.

I don't understand the rant. The program is for 2 at a time even though 1 was a re-rent. The clerk was correct and Blockbuster didn't do anything wrong. If you rent a movie for $4, take it home and it's damaged, you can't take it back and get a free re-rent of the same movie plus an additional movie to make up for the $4 that you already paid. Sorry but I'm on Blockbusters side on this one. But my question is if you dislike Blockbuster so much, why do you keep renewing your pass every couple of months? Why not just take your business elsewhere or join Netflix? ]

I've actually been a member of Blockbuster since about 1987 and I've never had a problem. And I've been to a lot of Blockbusters all over San Antonio and Austin. Never a problem so I don't understand why so many people have problems with Blockbuster.
Yeah, I gotta say I'm with Blockbuster on this one, too. It's an understandable rant, but really you're paying to have two out at a time, just as the previous poster said.
And as for employees being dicks, it's usually a matter of delivery. As anyone who's worked in retail knows, there is such thing as corporate policy.

sorry you had to go through that.
i like blockbuster. but i won't lie. if I had my own computer, I'd totally join net flix and leave blockbuster, only because we don't have a blockbuster that close to us, so I don't get to go as often as I'd like. my only beef with them is that charge WAY too much for new releases on DVD.

Yeah, we had a similar policy at our store, which was a Blockbuster-like chain video store, only Canadian. If your movie doesn't work, you can bring it back and get the same movie free of charge, no questions asked.
However, some people thought they could be smart and bring films back five hours later which they claimed didn't work, and then just get a different film. This is where customers would get real bitchy and threaten never to come back again, even though they show up a week later with three new releases that Blockbuster or Rogers didn't have any copies of.
Still, I sort of sympathize with those who hate BB and other chain stores, because it all kind of depends on the clerk you're dealing with. I'm usually pretty lax when it comes to stuff like that, since I can't be bothered to get into arguments with customers over this sort of shit. But I'm not afraid to admit that there were some real tight-assed employees who were more concerned about how they looked to management than customer satisfaction.
