View Full Version : A Black Bond?

British actor Colin Salmon has accused the production company behind James Bond of racism, after reports he was snubbed for the role of the debonair super agent because he is black
Salmon — who appeared in Die Another Day as spy Charles Robinson — had been rumoured to replace Pierce Brosnan as 007 in the upcoming Casino Royale, the World Entertainment News Network reports. The outgoing Brosnan even gave Salmon his endorsement, before the studio went with current Bond, Daniel Craig.
Now, Salmon alleges producers chose Craig because they worried fans would reject a black Bond.
“It's a shame I didn't get the part. But there will never be a black Bond,” he says. “God, they can't even have a blond Bond without everyone going crazy.”
A spokeswoman for EON, the production company behind Bond denies the allegation: “I think it's a rather below the belt allegation and I can't believe Colin has suggested it.
“Since it wasn't impossible for there to be a blond Bond, then it's not impossible for there to be a black Bond.”

I think that Colin could have made a terrific Bond but we just have to face the facts here. He was already a major character of the last 4 Bond films.

I like Colin Salmon but that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

Why does other races have to throw the race card when they don't get what they want. I find this to be a stupid allegation and he makes no sense when he says that they don't want a black bond. I mean, they probably looked at all the choices. The guy that was black and was not chosen as Pope didn't spout racism allegations after he wasn't picked.

I don't think I'd have a problem with a black Bond, though I admit it would throw the franchise for a loop. And ElderPredator's right - it would be very odd considering he was a different character in other Bond films.
I think he should be black and gay. Seriously. After Craig, if there's no obvious choice, a black gay James Bond would be awesome.

Woah there, speak for yourself. I'd love to see that. In fact, I'd be perfect for the part.

Thanks bud! I just think that he should have thought things through before making such comments. He plays a vital role in the last few films and I loved his character so it would be very strange for him to take the role as Bond for sure but it would never happen.

I know. I was like, "Who?" Then when I realized he was that one guy who'd already been in a bunch of Bond movies , I thought that would have made no sense. That'd be like turning Judi Dench into a bad guy in the next movie.
I think this guy's a good actor. I like him. But casting him would be silly.
Though a black Bond would be great because when he's sitting at a gambling table in some showdown with the villian, he can say: "Always bet on black!" and then blow everything up.

They did the reverse for Joe Don Baker, who played the villain in The Living Daylights and Bond's bestest CIA buddy in Goldeneye, so... not like they haven't done anything of this nature before.
Plus, while having Colin be the first black Bond would be a little jarring given the original character has been white since its conception (sort of like making Shaft white, as an inverse example, as someone stated above), remember that Connery, Moore, Dalton, Lazenby and Brosnan don't look alike EITHER.
So really, despite him being in the last four Bond movies, having Colin be Bond wouldn't have bothered me at all. Bond is more a CHARACTER, than he is a "look"... well, in terms of aesthetics. He's definitely got a look, in the way he carries himself, obviously. That's what makes Bond Bond.
Then again, I wouldn't mind having a Charles Robinson spinoff. I always dug his character and wanted to see more of him in action, which we sorta got in Die Another Day, but not nearly enough.

True - I thought about that; though it wouldn't be the first time an actor or actress was in multiple Bond movies playing different characters - Maud Adams comes to mind.

I love reading stuff like this.
He talks like the world is a lesser place without him as the role.
“It's a shame I didn't get the part. But there will never be a black Bond,”

If the studios tried to do that, there would be rioting in the streets. Bond is white, Santa is white, James West is white (look what happened there...though I did like the flick) Ralph Kramden is white - again, look what happened there! I would also complain if someone wanted to make Blade white.
Besides, Undercover Brother is black, whats he bitching about? :D
Btw, I'd rather watch UB than the majority of Bond films.

While I hate when people play the race card just b/c things dont go their way, but this does bring up an interesting topic. When can a classical character of one race be played by someone of another race? I thought Michael Clarke Duncan did a good job as The Kingpin in Daredevil and I'm a fan of having Terence Howard or Denzel Washington play Harvey Dent in the Dark Knight. However, I dont feel the same about of having this guy play James Bond. Not sure why, maybe if Daniel Craig hadnt already been casted I might be more open to it but the guy seems to be knocking Daniel Craig if he thinks he was dismissed due to race. You're not making any friends or gaining any more roles by complaining about racism after being beaten out by a terrific actor.

With more popular characters, I think the situation has more to do with maintaining a certain image, no matter what race the character is.

This is the dumbest thing ive heard in a very long time. Obviously a black bond would turn away audiences, there is no point in changing the race of a character in a franchise as big as James Bond. This would be like a fat ass white guy bitching because he didnt get the part of James Bond because he was too fat...some things just dont fit the role my friend.

True. I forgot about him. They also did the same with Charles Gray... goodguy in You Only Live Twice, then played Blofeld in Diamonds Are Forever.
In both these cases, I just have to wonder... They couldn't find anyone else?

What a stupid idiot. It would be like making Superman black. Then he wouldn't be Superman anymore. It has nothing to do with racism, it has to do with the character BEING A WHITE MAN.

On the other hand, I think The Arrow or JoBlo might have something to say about that. Them being the flyest white dudes this Negro has ever met.

To me it's more of a matter of tradition. All the actor who played Bond were from the U.K. (except for Lazenby from Australia, a commonwealth). I would complain just as much if they had a white southern redneck playing bond. You just don't mess with tradition!
