I just saw the trailer for this today, and I was blown away. What a beautiful, intense looking movie. The visuals, the colors were all totally beautiful. I have never read the novel the movie's based on (is it worth it?), but after seeing that trailer I kinda want to. It looks like a really original story.
The trailer is here (http://www.apple.com/trailers/dreamworks/perfume/) if you haven't seen it yet - totally worth checking out.
Thoughts on it?

I'm very excited about this movie, although I know my podunk town will never get it, so I'll be waiting for the DVD.
Fucking cultureless burg of mine....

Well, you never know - I've been noticing a lot of the movie theaters in my area are getting "select" showing slots, and showing more independent and foreign movies, so it could happen! The movie is out the 27th, so there's still some time!
I'm thinking of picking up the book it's based on, just to check it out. It's been awhile since I've seen a story that just kind of grabbed me like that. (Plus, there's a lot of good people in that cast - that was Alan Rickman in the trailer, and Dustin Hoffman I think.) Looks intriguing, for sure.

The books great
I'm glad they're keeping the gory whacked out ending.

Who wrote the book, does anyone know? I'm gonna investigate at the Borders this weekend, I think.
It looks like such an engrossing story - the trailer looks so lush and very tied in to the senses (which makes sense I guess given the subject matter.) I heard about that ending, in a sort of roundabout vague way - it sounds rather intrguing. I wonder how it will be done? But, then again, the guy that directed this (Tom Tykwer) did Run Lola Run and I loooved that. I am expecting good things!

I think it's not strange, so much, as just unexpected. I've never really seen a story like this, really. It's different, definitely, but I don't think in a bad way, at all.
I'm off to Barnes & Noble tonight to pick up the book. I think I'm going to read it pretty fast.

Well this isn't really spoilers but don't get your expectations about that gore thing up too high.
I cought the movie back in Russia a couple of weeks ago, there is no gore what so ever, in fact I don't even remember blood in the whole movie. Just violence, not even in the end. Although some scenes (and if you read the book you'll know what scenes I'm talking about) are fucking breathtaking. Literally.

I've heard some rumblings about the potential for gore and the ending, particularly, and I've never gotten the impression that any of it was incredibly gratutious or anything - things like the ending, etc., serves the story ultimately. I'm definitely intrigued to see how that plays out on film. vini, your comments are so piquing my curiousity!

I'm just amazed they're going with the ending which I loved.
Spoilers!!!!
If I remeber correctly the main character is literally torn apart by the crowds after he put the perfume on himself.

Wow. that was a good trailer. For a while, I cared less about seeing it. It looks good.

Didn't have much interest in this until I found out that the book has gone through a lengthy adaptation process for quite some time -- Stanley Kubrick was reported to have had interest for a while, but left when it seemed impenetrable.

Wow, I had no idea about the Kubrick thing. I wonder what that would have turned out like?
However, I think Tom Tykwer is a really good director in his own right. Run, Lola Run was a really good movie, and I love the way he uses color (which he seems to do again in the trailer. It looks so vibrant.)
There are some good actors here - Alan Rickman (*tinysquee*) and Dustin Hoffman, I know - who are they playing/how do they fit in? Anyone know?

My interest is definatly peaked. . . . I only saw the trailer once. I read about it in a mag. It seems unique. I just might read the book too. Did anyone find out who the author is?

It's by a guy named Patrick Suskind, and there's a new softcover version out that's a movie tie-in (it's cover is the movie poster) so I think most major bookstores will/should have it (I was worried about not being able to find it.)
bourne, I am looking forward to your review - I can't wait to see this for myself, and I wish Dec. 27th wasn't so far away! :)
