Directed by Liam Lynch
Written by Jack Black and Kyle Gass
Genre: Comedy
Tagline: The greatest motion picture of all time.
Plot: This is the story of a friendship that changes the course of rock history forever, of the fateful collision of minds between JB and KG that led to the creation of the precedent-shattering band Tenacious D, and of the two heroes' quest to find the fabled Guitar Pick Of Destiny...
Starring Jack Black and Kyle Gass
Rated R for pervasive language, sexual content and drug use.
This has been a great year for comedies (Nacho Libre, Click, Clerks II, Talladega Nights, Jackass Number Two and Borat) and this looks like it might be the one to finish off the great year. And it's rated R! I'm not sure the release date because it's been changed around about 5 times. But next Friday or the one after that. Sorry if this thread is a little early.

Hay Randal, it's called 'Rock Your Socks' and it was on the old Tenacious D album.

I don't know what to think.
The trailer was complete, utter shit. On the otherhand, the first six minutes on youtube were damn near brilliant and actually gave me hope for the movie.
But despite the brilliant opening moments, I'm still not expecting much from this movie.

I'm not a big fan of Tenacious D. However, I was fortunate enough to be one of the 4,000+ people at their mini-concert held at the 2005 San Diego Comic-Con. They're quite entertaining... and loud. As for the film, it looks like stupid fun, and I'm sure the music will kick ass. So yeah, I'll check it out.

Lets get this thread going. I need some reviews from reliable fans. I'm only listening to reviews from you guys. Critics are not going to like it because it is crazy, crude and offensive. But this movie has been hyping up on this site since it was first announced. Now, I'm sure someone has seen it. It isn't released in Canada until tomorrow, so I have to wait until Saturday. Otherwise I would have seen it already.

I was there as well. Good show. I just saw them again a few days ago up in hollywood and the stage production of the show was insane. it had the boys going down to a kick ass stage set up of hell with a full back up band. They reinacted pretty much all of the scenes of the movie on stage *spoilers*
Including the showdown with the devil.
As far as the movie goes, We went opening night and it's a Tenacious D movie, Nothing more needs to be said. It rocks your fucking socks off.

The trailer was awful, but I like Black and Tenacious D enough to probably see the film anyway.

i saw this at the Tuesday night premiere...
it IS very funny, and an all around enjoyable movie... BUT i def felt it could have been more comical.
The music was excellent, but that has been pretty much the only cd i have been listening to since it came out, which is alot of the humor in the movie.
You all should see this though... it IS NOT making ANY money. Only a little over a million each day, Wed & Thurs... finishing in 10th place. Hopefully it will find an audience this weekend

Review * May Contain Spoilers*
The movie kicks off with a bang. The child version of JB rocks out in front of his old man, MeatLoaf, and then gets punished for it. He then decides to runaway and start his own band.
The movie ultimately falls flat after that. Gass and Black grow very annoying and the jokes are just one note variety. I laughed a couple of times, but found myself to be more agitated than anything.
The music was average, nothing compares to the original stuff from their first album.
The cameos of Tim Robbins as a lunatic and Dave Grohl as Satan were mildly amusing.
Overall I expected a lot more from this "D" movie. It wasn't really funny at all. If you want "Tenacious D" laughs, check out their "Complete Masterworks" dvd. This was by far was disapointing film.
I give this a D+

I almost fully agree. I found that the songs were not as well written or funny as their self-titled album and the rest of the movie did not live up to the quality of the show. Some funny moments (the beginning especially) but too many scenes missed the mark (sasquatch just didn't do it for me). I wanted to like this movie being a huge fan of The D, but I left wishing I went to The Fountain...what was I thinking?

This movie worked in one aspect, and it's that it made me want to get some Tenacious D albums... the movie, as a movie and a comedy, fell completely short. I think I laughed maybe 3 times, it was definitely a waste of money.

I am not a fan of rock music, but it didn't matter. I loved this movie. It's not non-stop laughs, but there are a shit load of laughs throughout and this movie is crude as hell, and I loved every second of it. This movie concentrates on rock, humour and entertainment. And all those categories are filled when it comes to this movie.
Jack Black is great as JB, and he plays the role of the crazy guy, like he does in most of his movies. And he is damn crazy. The dialouge is brilliant and some of the songs had me dying from laughter.
If you don't like Jack Black, stay the fuck away from this movie. But if you do, you will love this movie to death. Again, I am not a fan of rock music, but this movie was fucking sweet!

I never walk out of movies. Never, ever, ever. I love Jack Black to death. Tenacious D's self titled debut album is brilliant, as is their complete masterworks DVD. And yet, I found this film to be so annoying and unfunny that I walked out. Maybe it was the ridiculous and awful cameos by Ben Stiller and Tim Robbins. Maybe it was the complete lack of any wit or humor whatosever, regardless of Black's usually awesome shtick. Maybe it was the dissapointing songs compared to their first album. Or maybe its the fact that Kyle Gass is an absolutely horrible actor. Whatever the case may be, I could not stand this film. By the time the Sasquatch hallucination rolled around I was out the door.
Maybe some day in the future when its on cable I'll give it another watch because I'm so fucking dissapointed, but this was just beyond awful.
And to think I got so excited by seeing the first 6 minutes on YouTube the other day. But folks, its all downhill from there. Way downhill.

I'm a huge D fan and I loved it. It just fucking rocks. Where it lacks in laughs, it makes up in rocking. In fact, I saw it twice, partially because I saw that it was bombing at the box office. I saw them live on Friday (which was the best) and Jack was asking the audience to get as many people to go see it as possible, even our grandmothers who we know wouldn't like it. Then he said, "ah, we're fucked anyway." But seriously, this was always destined to be a DVD movie. I can't wait to buy it, and the album is way better after seeing the movie. And their live show blew my ass out.

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny - 7/10 or ***1/2/***** stars
From the awesome opening sequence to the wicked showdown pitting Tenacious D (Jack Black and Kyle Gass) against Satan (played by Dave Grohl, lead vocalist of the Foo Fighters, and one of the best, most talented rockers/musicians out there today), Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny is a lot of fun to watch. Although the film has its laughs and a couple of moments of hilarity, it's more about the music, all of which is insanely catchy, and actually made me want to start stomping my feet on the theater floor. "Kickapoo" is the song that opens up this rock musical/comedy, and in my opinion, it's one of the best songs of the year. Tenacious D's lyrics may be incredibly ludicrous and whimsical, but they're quite believable as a rock band, simply because they know how to rock, and they kick ass. Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny should be avoided at all costs if you find Jack Black annoying or despise Tenacious D's music, but if you're a fan of either, you'll probably enjoy this and even want to rock out to the music.

..i guess ill be one of the first to say that i was really let down by this. The opening was brilliant and i loved the rock off at the end, but other then that i really didnt get that much from this. :( Not terrible, but not really good either. 5/10.
Due to the kick-assery of SCHOOL OF ROCK, and the first 5 minute preview i watched, i think i let my expectations run wild with how "smart" i thought this was going to be.:(

Note: I haven't seen the flick yet, but I have seen the ENTIRE masterworks DVD (ENTIRE- repeatedly), etc, so I think I have a good idea what to expect...
Anyone even expecting a decent movie shows you don't really know what to expect from "The D". Try to go into this flick expecting something more like a Kung Fu flick, and you'll be closer to reality. The script is going to be terrible, the jokes are going to be hit-or-miss, and things will border on annoying at times. And that's the flavor of Tenacious D, folks.
...and it's unfair (IMHO) to compare this movie's music to the album. Just like it's unfair to compare the band you're probably expecting to see here (the D from the album) to the actual Tenacious D (from the Masterworks / Live). The D on the album were all of the band's very best skits, rehearsed thousands of times at thousands of gigs, refined over years into crystalline form. The actual band is rougher, cruder, and just plain more hit-or-miss.
To note, I'm not ragging on Tenacious D- I'm just stating facts. I'm a MASSIVE fan, but some parts of the HBO show bore my pants off while others are some of my favorite moments from sketch comedy (karate street fight). Sometimes when the D play live they do kooky things that don't truly pan out, sometimes they strike absolutey friggin' gold. That's just... how it is. And that's what you gotta know to go into their movie.
In the end, it's mostly about innovation (acoustic-only rock music? wth?) and recycling old cliches into new ideas (rock powerslides and c*ck pushups).
