View Full Version : Wii vs. PS3: Which is better?

I say the Wii will be better (let's put to the side that the systems aren't out yet, by the way), and here is why:

1) a 600 dollar system versus a 250 dollar one. This should be self-explanatory.

2) The Wii is compact and reasonably sized, while PS3 looks like a fucking EKG machine

3) The Wii is actually doing innovative and new ideas, while the PS3 seems like a bigger flashier version of their last system.

4) Nintendo has some great 1st party launches coming in the next few months, and PS3 has God of War 2 and that is about it.

5) Yeah, PS3 supports Blu-Ray, but that is a format created by Sony, and therefore doesn't have nearly the support it could.

It's also worth noting that my boss at work got the chance to go to Toronto and be educated in what the PS3 and Wii details. 2 hours was set aside for everyone to demo the products. However, the booths for PS3 had only unplayable stations showing video of a view games. While all of the booths for Wii had a fully functional unit playable to 3 games. What was the reason? Sony Canada reps said they don't have any units available for demo at the time.

This was October 14th. Nintendo has a huge advantage over PS3 in its shipping quota. There are already reports that they have gone well over their 4 million units in North America alone and are reaching the 6 million mark. This can't be said for the PS3, when back in mid-October they were still trying to work out the kinks in the system for a looming launch.

Just to correct you a little bit God of War 2 is a PS2 game. I really find it surprising that I'm hoping that the PS3 fails seeing that I was a proud owner of the PS1 and PS2. The thing about Sony is they make shitty malfunctioning videogame systems that just so happen to have great games. The fact that the PS3 is already showcasing overheating problems just like the PS2 is a bad sign.

Reason being that I hope the PS3 fails is partly because of my anger towards Sony for being so arrogant as to assume that everybody who bought a PS2 is willing to plunk down $600 for the PS3. And the SIXAXIS controller is a fucking joke. Not only did they rip the idea from the Wii at the very last minute (they had just implemented 2 weeks prior to E3) but various reports indicate that it works like shit and the rumble feature has been taken out to boot. For those of you that think brand name alone will make the PS3 success should be reminded of the Sega Dreamcast. Sega was still a pretty big name, and that system was $400 less than the PS3, and it lasted on the market for about a year and a half. I've spoken to a lot of people regarding the PS3 and the Wii and I've met FAR more people who plan on buying a Wii this year as opposed to the Wii. In fact I think I've spoken to about 2 people who said they plan on buying a PS3. And Sony obviously doesn't give a shit that it'll be pissing off a lot of gamers by releasing only 400 thousand units this year. Fuck Sony, I hope the PS3 bankrupts them.

So hopefully NIntendo will win through with its innovative controller and reasonable price tag and Sony will fail because of their greed and arrogance if there's any justice in the videogame industry.

For the next year, the PS3 is gonna suck. But after the good games start coming out, and Sony fixes out all the kinks, then it will be awesome.

But I'd still prefer to get a PS3 now than a Wii. Nintendo games never have any substance. They're all goofy, colorful, child-appropriate games - well, most of them are anyway.

And the new set-up for the Wii might be different and cool, but it's not like it's a major step up for the future of gaming... it's more like a side project or something.

Whereas XBox 360 and PS3 are next-gen consoles featuring supreme graphics and technical capabilities, the Wii has instead opted to simply try something completely different.

That's fine, but it can't really compete with... you know, real games. The ones we've been playing all our lives, with actual controllers, and not just moving around our hands.

Once people get bored with that feature, what else does the Wii have to offer?

What are you talking about? Almost all of Nintendo's flagship entries have enormous depth, replayability, and are just great. Ya know, Mario 64, Metroid Prime, the Zelda series, Smash Bros, etc.

I'll give ya Zelda and Mario 64, but not Smash Bros. And I've never had any interest in Metroid, so I can't say on that one.

And besides, you only listed four games there, one of which is 10 years old. For PS2 and XBox (and even the 360 now), you could list countless games filled with depth of gameplay and story.

Nintendo's consoles have like 5 to 10 games total that have any type of real substance. And seeing as how most people have specific tastes about what games they enjoy, it's very likely they'll want only like 2 or 3 of those 10 games.

Unless, I'm completely mistaken, and I just missed all the amazing games that came out for the Gamecube.

It's cool and all that you still prefer PS3 over Wii, but I will defend Wii on a couple of things: it is true Nintendo has been hindered by focusing too much on attracting kids and not adults, but Wii is being marketed to everyone instead, and with Red Steel, Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, and many other series making Wii games, it seems adult audiences are going to be able to embrace the system earlier. Plus whether or not you are a fan of the Nintendo franchises (Zelda, Metroid, Mario), you can't deny they have monster appeal. The sad fact is Sony has very little dependable first-party support, it is all third party. With Wii's third party support massive for this system, it seems the one advantage PS has always had on Nintendo will be eliminated.

I could list a lot of great games for GameCube. Hell, there are what, like 300 titles that all 3 platforms have?

Why don't you list all of the titles for PS2 and Xbox that have this "real substance" you allude to. I find it strange when people call one of the current consoles libraries weak, when like half the library of each is shared by all 3.

I'll try making a list of the better GameCube games, a list I got just by culling IGN. A number of these titles I don't really like, but are generally well-liked by others.

Resident Evil 0, 1, and 4
Metroid Prime 1 and 2 (well, for me, much more so with 1)
Prince of Persia trilogy
Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Eternal Darkness
Super SMash Bros. Melee
Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2
NFL Street Series
Madden series
Mario Sunshine
Pikmin 1 and 2
SSX Series
F-Zero GX
Tony Hawk series
Soul Calibur 2
Paper Mario
Splinter Cell series
TimeSplitters 2 and 3
Animal Crossing
Rogue Squadron 2 and 3
NBA Live Series
Beyond Good and Evil
Super Monkey Ball series
Baten Kaitos
Skies of Arcadia
Need for Speed series
Fire Emblem
Tales of Symphonia
Burnout series
Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
Naruto Gekito Ninja Taisen 3 and 4
Alien Hominid

I could keep going on for a number of other titles, but do I really need to?

-Final Fantasy X.
-Final Fantasy XII.
-Silent Hill 2.
-Silent Hill 3.
-Silent Hill 4: The Room.
-Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty/Substance.
-Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater/Subsistence.
-Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver 2.
-Legacy Of Kain: Defiance.
-Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille Zur Mecht.
-Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits Von Gut Und Bosse.
-Xenosaga Episode III: Also Spracht Zarathustra.
-Okami.
-Devil May Cry.
-Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening/Special Edition.
-Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3.
-Rule Of Rose.
-Resident Evil 4: Special Edition.
-Dragon Quest VIII.
-Grandia III.

Just off the top of my head. Also, notice I'm sticking to like two genres there.

And before you go and say "What?! Half those games suck!" remember I could say the same thing about your list.

I for one think the PS2's library is fantastic. But that doesn't mean the PS3's library will be fantastic. I can't tell just by looking abck at the previous console.

Ok, most them games suck, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3. Be fair. The Ps2's library was mainly made up of shit movie games, property titles or licensed games. Dont think sony made 5 good games themselves.

Sony doesn't make great games, but a lot of third party developers make great games on their systems. Squares games on PS2 are 10x better than the half assed stuff they put on Gamecube (compre FFX and Xenosaga with Crystal Chronicles, I dare you). Same with Capcom (aside from RE4, every good Capcom game was PS2, like Devil May Cry) and whoever makes the Metal Gear games (Konami I think). At the end of the day, whichever system gets better third party support will have a better library, but they're both too good and too established to say they won't have great libraries.

Gamcube had great games... I mean, a lot of great games, particularly Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem (glad someone mentioned that). You're a fool to say otherwise, same with any one who would say PS2 had bad games. We all know better than that. All the systems are gonna have great games. Sony and Nintendo have a history of working well with third party developers to give us a variety of options. And, in Nintendo's case, they have great franchises that we know will turn into great games (although Super Mario Sunshine makes me question if I can actually make that statement). Why are we debating this again?

I wasn't arguing the PS2 has a bad library. My point is all 3 systems have very good libraries. The PS2 has the best overall IMO.

Eh, my point was simply that Nintendo, while cheaper, always seems to be a step behind Sony and Microsoft in terms of games, graphics, and control.

Playstation 2 has the best games and control.

XBox has the best graphics.

And Gamecube has... help me out here.

On a related note, I played a Wii yesterday. They have a kiosk of it at my mall's gamestop. Had ExciteTruck playing. You had to give them your license to get the remote, as they apparently haven't figured out a way to secure it to the kiosk (I can think of a few, but oh well).

The Wii interface is very nicely set up, although I wish you didn't HAVE to use a cursor to select channels - especially when you're picking between options like yes and no, why not just let me hit left on the d-pad and then hit A instead of having to select it with the cursor? The cursor is a touch floaty and some would say oversensitive, but this is helped a lot by standing further from the sensor bar. Interface is very quick to use, I personally consider it an improvement over the 360 dashboard - but I can't make any definitive statements as there is a lot which just isn't there yet. For example, we don't know if there will be downloadable demos or not, and how that will work into the interface.

ExciteTruck is fun, but I'm not sold on the game.. Not much of a racing fun, probably the main reason. The controls felt fine to me (though I think I might find it tiresome over a longer play session - not physically tiring, but just obnoxious if you had to do it for several hours), and I like the terrain deformation and using it to fling people around. Also, ExciteTruck definetly has a custom soundtrack option via SD card, which is nice. I probably won't get a huge amount of use out of custom soundtracks, but for racing games I can definetly see the appeal. Hopefully other games follow suit. Which reminds me - Circuit City is having a black Friday sale of 1 gig SD cards for $2.99, but you'll probably have to show up at 5 AM to get one.

Finally, the wii remote feels very nice in either standard or horizontal orientation. Very comfortable, and light but not too light. All buttons are easy to access (well, not so much 1 and 2 in standard orientation). I wish they'd have had a game which uses the nunchuk on display, but you can't have everything.

I can also confirm you can turn the console on and off with the remote, which is nice. Also, the remote seems very durable, and even if the batteries get popped out in the middle of a game, it still works fine again once you put them back in.

Why is it Wii vs. PS3 when the systems are going for two completely different games.

I'm getting the Wii. now its the PS3 vs. the 360
