I always had a major gripe about the way thunderstorms are presented in movies and tv shows. Usually there's rain coming from a sparkling blue California sky with shadows from the sun all over the place. Worse yet, I get annoyed at the simultaneous flash and rumble of a fake thunderstorm (when lightning is so close that the thunder is simultaneous, it makes a much bigger impression on you than what is shown on the screen!). I realize that it takes patience to get a good thunderstorm into a movie scene, but the least they could do is get the timing right and also record some real thunder.

I know what you mean. I like how they used the timing betwwen thunder and lightning in the film Poltergiest. Not only was it realistically portrayed, it a significant element to the plot.

Damn, I was just about to mention that. It's one of my favorite scenes from the flick. It's not creepy or anything but the father-son relationship makes it somewhat heartwarming.

Cool, then I'm first for once. :D

This is true. It was a fairly heartwarming father-son bonding moment. Later on, it became a metephor for how close the evil spirits are. Let's say you counted to five for the time between the lighting and thunder. If you counted to six or seven, that meant that the storm was moving away from you. If ,however, you count to four or three, that meant the storm was coming closer to you.

The storm was a metaphor for the where the evil was, they were either moving away from you, or they were coming closer to you.

That's why I said it was significant element to the plot. This is only time seen thunder and lighting used to this fashion. No other movie to my knowledge has done anything like this.
