LOS ANGELES - Jack Palance, the craggy-faced menace in "Shane," "Sudden Fear" and other films who turned to comedy at 70 with his Oscar-winning self-parody in "City Slickers," died Friday.
Palance died of natural causes at his home in Montecito, Calif., surrounded by family, said spokesman Dick Guttman. Palance was 85 according to Associated Press records, but his family gave his age as 87.
When Palance accepted his Oscar for best supporting actor he delighted viewers of the 1992 Academy Awards by dropping to the stage and performing one-armed push-ups to demonstrate his physical prowess.
"That's nothing, really," he said slyly. "As far as two-handed push-ups, you can do that all night, and it doesn't make a difference whether she's there or not."
That year's Oscar host, Billy Crystal, turned the moment into a running joke, making increasingly outlandish remarks about Palance's accomplishments throughout the night's awards presentations.
It was a magic moment that epitomized the actor's 40 years in films. Always the iconoclast, Palance had scorned most of his film roles.
"Most of the stuff I do is garbage," he once told a reporter, adding that most of the directors he worked with were incompetent.
Movie audiences, however, were electrified by the actor's chiseled face and hulking presence, and a calm, low voice that made him all the more chilling.
Wow...this is surprising. RIP Curly.

I actually thought he had already died a while ago.
Either way, this is terrible news. He was really a great character person. RIP.:(

City Slickers was my favorite movie when I was 11 years old. First Bruno Kirby and now him. :(

I will always remember Batman as the first film I saw him in, and Jack Nicholson doing a bangup impersonation.

The guy was a great actor with plenty of memorable performances. He was perfect in Shane and subsequently in City Slickers. There's no question he deserved an Oscar for the latter. R.I.P.

Damn. Looks like I can just give up on my hopes for Cops and Robbersons 2
There are few out there that played the heavy so well as Jack Palance. I remember old westerns and gangster flicks with Jack in them, not to mention episodes of TV shows in the 50's -80's, in which he guest starred as the villain. He also had a very successful run on "Ripley's Believe It Or Not!" with his daughter Holly in the 1980's.
After two Oscar nominations in his early years for roles in SUDDEN FEAR and SHANE, he finally won his first Oscar for his comedic role as trail boss Curly Washburn in the 1991 hit CITY SLICKERS, along side Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby. He also had success in such films as YOUNG GUNS and BATMAN. But he will always be remembered as cinema's great villain. He was one of a kind. God bless and RIP.

This is sad, sad news! I loved many of his movies...I don't think I've ever seen a bad performance coming from him. Although I have to say, my favorite character is the bounty hunter he played Sergio Corbucci's western Vamos A Matar, Companeros!. His character with the pet hawk and the joints was cool as hell!
R.I.P. Mr. Palance...
