George Clooney Named PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive
WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 15, 2006 07:45AM EST

Brad Pitt, you've got company.

George Clooney has been named PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive for 2006 – joining his pal Pitt as a two-time honoree.

"Brad's going to be upset," the 45-year-old Oscar winner tells PEOPLE in its special issue.

Then again, after the year Clooney's had, his buddy will understand. Hollywood's consummate gentleman kicked things off with an Academy Award (winning Best Supporting Actor for Syriana,) and Clooney further cemented his reputation for social activism, working on behalf of causes to help the troubled Darfur region of Sudan.

And through it all, he's kept his sense of humor intact. "There's a lot of pressure," he says of the Sexiest Man Alive honor. "There are all the events you have to show up for. The sash you have to wear … is embarrassing."

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Clooney sounds off on romance rumors, his thoughts on marriage and kids – and what it's like to date a woman while photographers are tailing you.

On whether he'll ever have children:
"I think it's the most responsible thing you can do, to have kids. It's not something to be taken lightly. I don't have that gene that people have to replicate. But everything in my life has changed over time."

On his vow to "never marry again" – and whether he's changed his mind:
"The truth is, I haven't softened my position on anything, but it's not something I deal with on a regular basis. Who knows? I've been married (in the early '90s, to actress Talia Balsam). It's not something I'm looking out for. The truth is, I'm really happy."

On what he finds attractive:
"Everybody says this, but sense of humor is No. 1 for me. It's certainly what's most attractive. It's not the first thing you notice at 21, but it's the first thing you notice now. You also have to have a sense of humor about my life. It certainly has had an effect on relationships, but I would bet less of an effect than my own issues or insecurities. You can't really blame outside forces for things not working out. You have to take some responsibility."

On being in the tabloids:
"I usually don't notice anymore. The funniest thing is that recently a story came out that I was with some girl from Deal or No Deal whom I had never even met."

On his favorite on-set pranks:
"There were so many. It's a constant battle of evil, rotten things."

On being named Sexiest Man Alive for a second time:
"This one's going to be hard for Brad (Pitt) since he's been Sexiest Man Alive twice. He's enjoyed that mantle. I'd say 'Sexiest Man Alive' to him and he'd go, 'Two-time.' So that's been taken away. We used to call him Two Time. So Brad's going to be upset."

Dude, I'm a straight guy, but it's easy to see that Clooney deserved that award. In terms of looks, acting ability, and public persona, he's the man.

Ten years ago I would have agreed with PEOPLE magazine 100%.

I agree totally. I'm a guy and even I'll say that he's a handsome bastard and a great guy. I wish I was him truthfully. :D

The man's got looks, so the title seems pretty fitting. Classy guy, too.

George Clooney's Pick for Sexiest Man: Matt Damon
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 16, 2006 05:20PM EST

George Clooney, PEOPLE's newly-named Sexiest Man Alive, quips about his friend Matt Damon missing out on the cover spot – and advises him on how to nab it one day.

"I gotta say, this is a very big disappointment for Matt, because he did run a very good campaign," Clooney jokes in the new issue of PEOPLE. "If you've been around him, you know he's sexy. His eyes pop. They have a twinkle. He's got a good smile. He's quite the dancer. He does rock a Speedo in Ocean's 13.

Clooney, a two time Sexiest Man Alive honoree (a title he shares with Ocean's costar Brad Pitt) says Damon sought his advice, "like a politician would go to Clinton" to find out how be chosen for the cover himself.

His advice: "I think you should go with a snakeskin suit and some mousse and give a sort of up-on-your toes pose." Damon strikes the pose in a photo, provided to PEOPLE by Clooney, taken in November 1997.

"I'm afraid he's going to think that I was using my influence to quietly, secretly take him down," Clooney says. "But really, Matt's got a couple of year left before it's time for him."

He's a cool guy and a class act, but what impresses me the most is that he seems to be politically responsible without being preachy like other celebs. He lets his art speak for itself and that's impressive!

Haha I love it.

He's did this kind of thing in Oceans 12. He took out a huge advert in Variety pushing Matt Damon's credidentials for Most sexiest man alive. The way the advert read it sounded like Matt had sent it in himself. :D I love wind ups.

It's great to see he was able to freely admit how attractive Damon is without using the tried-and-tired reassertion "NOT that I'm gay or anything...." :p

Totally deserved. I've thought he was hot ever since I saw him in Facts Of Life and he just gets better with age.

Oh well, I'm used to being on the other side of issues so here goes: I was disappointed to seeing Clooney on the cover as sexiest man alive of People. Why do they have to give the award out twice to two people? There are so many other great guys out there who could use the boost to their careers. I think People mag is lazy to give this award out again to the same person. I vote for James Tupper who is way sexy!

Well surely if they think Clooney is the sexiest man they should give it to him shouldn't they. It's not who needs a career boost it's who they think was the sexiest man that year. Or at least thats how it SHOULD work.

Lynn7
11-20-2006, 04:28 PM
Well, I'll go out on a limb and say that I can think of 50 men sexier than Clooney or Pitt. Choosing those two twice is weird cause there are lots of other better choices. We see enough of them already- they are both way overexposed.

Scorpio24
11-20-2006, 04:30 PM
Well that's fair enough. If you think other people are sexier fine. But to say other people deserve exposure more negates the award.

Lynn7
11-20-2006, 04:40 PM
I understand what you are saying but if it was my magazine ;) I would be looking to introduce sexy people that havne't been noticed yet- discovering the new talent rather than announcing someone who has been around for 20 years already as a known "sexy" man.

It's kind of like how the rich people are always getting the breaks- for instance, Tom Cruise's castle cost between $50,000-75,000 to rent and yet they let him have it for free. Now, couldn't they have taken his money and given it to charity? No. They let him have it for free as if he needs the financial break, right? Does Clooney need the People cover? I think not! :D

Scorpio24
11-20-2006, 04:48 PM
Yeah I see you're point. I guess there's two ways to look at it. I don't disagree with the premise of your point. Manged to get a Tom hit in there too.:D

Anyone who gives his bride a 3 minute kiss deserves a few hits, lol!
