From the IMDb...

French actor Philippe Noiret died yesterday after a long battle with cancer. He was 76. The Cinema Paradiso star appeared in more than 125 films and also took to the stage in a string of plays. Noiret started his career in 1956 in Agnes Varda's film La Pointe Courte. He won two Cesar Awards (the French Oscars) for Best Actor for his roles in Robert Enrico's 1976 film Le Vieux Fusil and Bertrand Tavernier's 1990 production La Vie Et Rien D'Autre. French Prime Minister Dominique De Villepin paid tribute to Noiret, saying, "Through his voice, his allure, his panache, Philippe Noiret knew how to seize and express something within the French soul. The silhouette and the voice, so tender and familiar, will be missed by all."

One of the great movie characters of all-time is his Alfredo in 'Paradiso'...

RIP.

I just saw IL POSTINO for the first time last month. Underwhelming film, but Noiret's performance was one of the flick's bright spots.

CINEMA PARADISO, on the other hand...what a film.

R.I.P. :(

Cinema Paradiso is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, and Noiret is just amazing in it.

R.I.P, good sir.

I never cared for foreign films till I started watching Cinema Paradiso one night, while flipping through the channels...half way through the movie I had forgotten that I was watching a foreign movie..

Got to be my favorite movie of all time..After that experience, whenever I come across a foreign film on tv, I always watch.

Funny, it was on a few weeks ago and I tried to get my wife to watch it..she walked out of the room about half way through LOL..Guess it's an acquired taste.
