View Full Version : That Perfect SONG, to that Perfect SCENE!

You guys know what I'm talking about. Every time you hear 'that one song' playing you instantly picture that scene in your head. Movies are constantly coming out with great soundtracks... But what song do you really redeem as memorable? My picks:

Reservoir Dogs, "Stuck in the Middle With You" by Stealer's Wheel. One of my favorite scenes of all time. Michael Madsen AKA Mr. Blonde, dances to this song... then proceeds to cut off the cops ear. Sheer madness. I dig it. Watch it HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JEerxQb04c).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v67/Bikini_Babe06/reser.jpg

Donnie Darko, "Mad World" by Gary Jules. In my opinion, this is one of the best song endings ever. It's such a sad song, but it fits perfectly at the end when the camera pans down to each person and shows their sadness. It truly is a memorable ending. Watch it HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F7RdeAYf5c).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v67/Bikini_Babe06/donnie.jpg

The Devil's Rejects, "Freebird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. This is also one of the best song endings ever IMO. The scene is shot perfectly as they're driving then the camera pans around perfectly to show what's about to come... Then the fast beat of the song comes as they're charging and shooting at the officers. God I love that scene. Watch it HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMnLB_Y4nEY).

I was just about to post MAD WORLD in Donnie Darko at the end.

...what about the opening song to KILL BILL? "My baby shot me down".

..and the opening song to DAWN OF THE DEAD O4? "Man comes around" by Johnny Cash.

Two very well used songs that perfectly set the movie up for all sorts of bad-assery.

"Gimme Shelter" playing in the opening scenes of The Departed. The amount of power and excitment that it adds is uncanny, once again proving Scorsese as the master of the juxtaposition of music (particularly rock n' roll) and cinema.

Sunshine of Your Love by Cream in Goodfellas when DeNiro is at the bar, sizing up his next kill.

...and Layla when they're showing all the heist guys' dead bodies being found

...and in Mean Streets, Jumping Jack Flash when DeNiro first shows up at the bar (I think this is it, haven't seen the movie in a while)

There's pretty much always a perfect song to a perfect scene in any Scorsese movie.

Just Like Honey by The Jesus & Mary Chain at the end of Lost In Translation. When I saw that movie for the first time a large part of why I immediately fell in love with it was the soundtrack. Being that i'm the biggest fan of JAMC in the universe the very idea of the final scene being soundtracked by one of their most sublimely gorgeous moments was impossible to resist.

Are we referring to regular songs that were either written for a movie's soundtrack/lifted from other albums and placed on the soundtrack, or more traditional scores that were written for a movie?

The diminished violins playing in "Requiem for a Dream" during the montage whilst the world comes down for the four main characters was very unsettling and worked perfectly during that scene.

The End by the Doors in the opening scene to Apocalypse Now. My favorite scene in any movie ever. Also The End in the desert scene then cuts to the Doors in concert in The Doors movie. Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space by Spiritualized during the scene towards the end of Vanilla Sky, and yea the scene where he jumps off the building and visions of his life flash in his mind is excellent too. “Sister Christian,” Boogie Nights. Goes to show that with the right mixture of gun-wielding drug dealers, sporadic firecrackers, and an unstable barely dressed drug dealer, this cheesy 80s ballad can be downright portentous.

“Inna-gadda-da-vida” Manhunter. This song's moment in this movie, for me, is more chilling than anything in both Red Dragon and Hannibal - combined.

“Lust for Life,” Trainspotting. I know some people who actually think this song was written just for the film. Well, I suppose that’s a compliment to both Mr. Iggy, for having written something that’s so utterly timeless, and to the filmmakers, notably director Danny Boyle, for choosing a song that’s – as one of the film’s character’s might say – so fucking apt, mate, for the film’s energy and theme.

“Let’s Stay Together,” Pulp Fiction. One would expect this song to be used in the context of, say, something romantic, even sexual. And perhaps that’s exactly what is being suggested by Tarantino’s use of this song during the scene where down-and-out boxer Butch is being somewhat seductively encouraged to take a payoff to throw his next fight. The moment is as beautiful as the long shot of Marcellus Wallace’s bald pate.

“If You Leave Me Now,” Three Kings. As much as I’d love to have a fully articulated reason for including this, I just don’t. It’s just an annoyingly cheesy song that somehow works at its particular moment in this movie.

“My Sharona,” Reality Bites. I can’t decide whether it’s one of the best one-hit wonder songs ever or if it just fits in this movie. I try imagining other one-hit wonders from the 80s that could have been used during that scene in the store, but none seem to work in my mind. “867-5309”? No. “Come On, Eileen”? Cute, but no. It had to be The Knack. Plus Ethan Hawke’s reaction to the hapless clerk is priceless.

“Living For The City,” Jungle Fever. Thanks, Spike. I can no longer hear this amazing Stevie Wonder tune without thinking of Samuel L. and Halle sucking on crack pipes. I'm not certain whether the latter part of that image is entirely bad.

“Tequila,” Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. If you were born after 1980, this movie probably introduced you to this song.

“Jump Into The Fire”/”Memo From Turner”/”Magic Bus”/“Monkey Man”/???/”What Is Life”/”Mannish Boy”, Goodfellas. This mash of tunes is the penultimate usage of music in a film for me; this is the blueprint from which all others should be modeled (and perhaps already have been). I don't think a soundtrack snippet (aided by some very sharp editing) has ever captured the psychological state of a film’s character so eloquently before.

“My Niggas,” Any Given Sunday. My only comment here is that I assume Oliver Stone picked this track because it’s just a cool little “ditty” and not because he had some ulterior agenda or message at work.

“Sunshine of Your Love,” Goodfellas. Almost forgot about this one and the way it heightens De Niro at one of his most menacing moments on film (after Taxi Driver and Cape Fear, of course).

Sorry for the wordiness; I'm a nerd for the music. :D

Any song used in any Scorsese movie (he must really love "Gimme Shelter")

"We'll Meet Again" in Dr. Strangelove- it was a brilliantly added and creepy addition to the film.

"The End" in Apocalypse Now- I love how it was used in that one scene in the beginning where Willard is losing his mind in that hotel room. Apparently, they used a part of the song that was cut out and not an official part of the song. They should have kept it, because it was really disturbing/entrancing.

"Adagio for Strings" in Platoon- ok, it's a classical music piece so I don't know if it counts as a song, but it was such a great addition to the film. It gave a film that was already powerful and amazing even more reach.

"Staying Alive" in Saturday Night Fever- how many opening sequences are better than the one in this movie? Very few.

I think it's the Stones in general that he loves (as do I). Nice mentions on Strangelove and Saturday Night Fever. Good ones.

"Can't You Hear Me Knocking?", Casino. This is just one of my favorite Stones songs, period. And the way Scorsese uses it here, underlying Nicky's pillaging spree, is just, well, cool.

"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", Casino. Stones by way of Devo. Again, just cool.

"Oh Yeah", Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Though it's used twice in the movie - and has been since appropriated then by everything from other films to TV commercials - that song, for me, is inextricably linked to those final images of poor ol' defeated Ed Rooney at the end - on the school bus with the girl and her "warm" gummy bears.

Fatboy Slim's "Song for Shelter" at the end of "Bully"

and

Elliott Smith's "Needle in the Hay" during the suicide attempt in "The Royal Tenenbaums"

There's more, I pay a lot of attention to music in movies, but those are two faves off the top of my head...

the axe murder scene in American Psycho set to Huey Lewis & The News' "Hip To Be Square", I love that scene and it works so well together.

I second that one.

Goodness...there's hundreds I can think of right now...that scene in American Psycho (2000, 10/10) is definitely one of the greats. But here's two that come to mind:

Heat (1995, 10/10)
Song: God Moving Over The Face of The Waters
Artist: Moby
Scene: Right at the very end of Pacino and DeNiro's shootout...with any other song, that death scene would've fallen flat on it's face.

Hard Candy (2005, 8/10)
Song: Elephant Woman
Artist: Blonde Redhead
Scene: Once again, at the very end of the movie...the beat of the song, the singer, the lyrics even though I can't understand them, everything, it just fuckin works.

SHIVER ME TIMBERS...

THE BASTARD RETURNS.

I'd like to add:

Liar, Liar by the castaways in Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrells. Its the song that plays during the card game montage.

Golden Brown in Snatch. This plays when Gorgeous George gets KO'd by Mickey.

"Amoreena" by Elton John, which plays over the opening introduction sequence in Dog Day Afternoon. What a brilliant use of music, it just works so perfectly with the images and tone.

Annie Hall, Diane Keaton's "Seems Like Old Times, during the ending montage

Nashville, Keith Carradine's "I'm Easy"

Trainspotting, Lou Reed's "Perfect Day", when Ewan McGregor overdoses and sinks into the ground

Lost in Translation, The Jesus & Mary Chain's "Just Like Honey", after Bill Murray says goodbye to Scarlett Johannson

Opening narration of Manhattan set to Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue"

Anything from a Scorcese or Wes Anderson flick

Good call. Also in Royal Tenenbaums, I love the scene with Gwyneth Paltrow getting off the bus while Luke Wilson gazes upon her fondly as Nico's THESE DAYS plays. Beautifully evocative. Others:

OOH LALA by The Faces as the curtain falls at the end of Rushmore.

The Pixies' WHERE IS MY MIND? at the end of Fight Club.

NEW SLANG by The Shins in Garden State when Natalie Portman has Zach Braff put on her headphones in the doctor's office.

When they sing TINY DANCER by Elton John on the bus in Almost Famous.

SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW during the loft shootout in Face/Off.

And many many others, I'll post more. Great thread!

Aside from alll the cool moments in movies that everybody's mentioned, I thought I'd mention the one scene that disturbed the hell out of me the first time I saw it... You guys would definitely agree that this scene is memorable and you can't get it out of your head once you've seen it:

The Silence of the Lambs
Goodbye Horses by Q Lazzarus.
Jaime Gumb poses and dances to the song before his big kill.

Damn that Jonathan Demme! haha... I love his films.

every song and every scene from lord of the rings is justifiably perfect.
