View Full Version : What Horror Movies of the Last Decade Will Be Considered Classics 20 Years From Now?

Over the past 10 years we've been beat over the head with remakes and sequels and I can count on one hand (and a few fingers) the movies that I think I'll still be interested in watching in the year 2027. CGI and spfx have changed how we see movies but much of what's come out is very unoriginal and few movies come to mind that can withstand repeated viewings.

So which horror movies do you think will be remembered as classics the way we think of Rosemary's Baby, Halloween, The Hills Have Eyes, The Exorcist, Alien, etc.???

The Descent
High Tension
A Tale of Two Sisters
House of 1000 Corpses
The Devils Rejects
Dawn of The Dead
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Audition
Shaun of The Dead
From Dusk till Dawn
Scream

As much as I love some of those movies you posted I don't know if any of them belong in that short list of classics you mention. The Descent will probably ascend(I'm a word smith) to the rank of classic simply because of how amazingly effective it is, but the only thing groundbreaking about it is that it is a great horror movie from an era that has seen very few.

What's a classic? There are two kinds of horror classics: The ones who are recognized as classics by everyone (TCM, Shining, Alien, Exorcist, etc) and then there are B-classics, which are classics only in the eyes of the horror crowd (The Hills Have Eyes belongs to this category).

Anyway These are sure bets, since they are the most famous and important horror movies of the last 10 years:

Scream
Blair Witch Project
6th Sense

And here are movies with a good chance, althought some are more B-classic material. These have already gathered strong fame, and a strong following:

Saw
28 Days Later
The Ring / Ringu
Shaun of The Dead
The Descent
The Others

...From the top of my head.

All the ones I can think of have already been mentioned. Saw and Scream are kind of contreversial on these boards, but you can't deny they have a large enough fanbase and impact on the genre to be around in 20 years or so.

Shaun of the Dead was the only movie of recent years to come to mind. i've seen some good horror movies (very few) but none that i deem worthy of ever becoming a classic in my eyes like Shaun.

Besides some of the ones listed above. I put my hopes in Feast. Don't know if it would be a classic in 20 years, but hope so cause I thought it was so darn entertaining and didn't take it's self to seriously.

The Descent is probably the only movie I would consider a classic 20 years from now.

Maybe The Sixth Sense and Blair Witch Project.

The Descent is really the only one that will for sure be called a classic, but I'm sure there will be others, just not sure of which ones yet.

For The Mainstream critics faves I'd probably say these would be it with Audition thrown in.

Scream
Saw
The Sixth Sense
Blair Witch Project
The Descent
Audition
Ringu/The Ring
The Others
I Know What You Did Last Summer (Sort of like how the original Friday The 13th is thought of today. Like that it's pretty mediocre when compared to the other big slasher of the era. In Friday's case Halloween and in IKWYDLS case Scream.)

Here are some that will probably be considered classics by fans of the horror genre:

Event Horizion
The Devil's Rejects
High Tension
From Dusk Till Dawn
Shaun Of The Dead
Final Destination
Signs
Bubba Ho-Tep
Frailty
The Devil's Backbone
Freddy vs Jason
American Psycho
A Tale Of Two Sisters
The Ugly
May
Stir Of Echoes
The Cell
Session 9
Kairo
Cabin Fever
28 Days Later
The Eye
Hard Candy
Ginger Snaps
Cube
Silent Hill

Some movies that aren't technically horror, but have enough elements that I will put them here would include:

Oldboy
The Matrix
Battle Royale
Memento
Muholland Drive
Donnie Darko
Fight Club
Lost Highway
Dark City
Pan's Labyrinth
Requiem For A Dream

This is what I feel the general and horror movie loving public will hold highly of in 30 years or so. Despite the fact that a few movies I listed here, I felt aren't that good (Final Destination, Silent Hill, 28 Days Later, Signs, IKWYDLS)

Saw Trilogy... It had more substance then most horror films out today. I consider it to start becoming a classic soon.

Pan's Labyrinth (though not directly horror) will defiently become a great classic and not only a great thriller/ fantasy/ horror classic but a general classic film. It was amazing and well acted film.

Yep that is defiently my opinion. :)
