Help with cruddy old movie

My brother and I were talking about a craptastic old horror movie from our youth, and I thought for sure it was Warlock. So we went and rented it and quickly realized Warlock was probably ripped off by the movie we saw.

It had a similar evil sorcerer storyline (I think the villain even looked like the Warlock) who ran around a city trying to do something evil. The thing my brother and I remembered best was the dude animated a skeleton fossil of a wooly mammoth or something.

Any ideas at all?

I admit I'm stumped, but the Warlock had a bunch of crappy sequels.

At first I thought it was the sequel Warlock: Armageddon, but I think you're describing Dr. Mordrid, starring Jeffery Combs and made for Full Moon Entertainment in 1992. It was directed by Charles and Albert Band.

Yes that's it! So it even had the same guy who played the Warlock? No wonder we were confused. Man it looks awesome!

Actually, the titular character in both Warlock and Armageddon is Julian Sands (a phenomenal actor). In the last sequel, Bruce Payne (Highlander: Endgame) takes up the character. I liked the first two, but the third movie is only worthwhile for a naked Angel Boris.
