Unfortunately, the studio decided that they wanted to embargo our reviews until "opening day", so it will likely not be up before then. Off the record, I'm giving the film a 5/10. Bullock and Chaplin were lame and predictable, while the two boys in the movie, Gosling and Pitt, were quite good.
I think it looks really good and I love Bullock. I might see it in theaters but if I don't I will see it for sure on video.

All I can say is they better use the song Murder By Numbers by the Police or the entire movie will blow!
Out....................

I give it a 3/10. I went to a pre-screening and the movie was so ass that as the credits were rolling we could here people all around us saying, "That was bad." "That sucked." "I thought it'd never end."

Well, I like to see every psychological-thriller that hits the theaters. But I'm still undecided about Murder By Numbers. It's one of those might see/might rent kind of flicks.

It looked completely typical to me, and that's what I've heard from other sources, too...
I have a hard time watching Sandra Bullock. Her Adam's apple is very, very distracting.

And here I thought I was the only one who noticed her Adam's apple. Doesn't that trip you out?

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if she's a transsexual. She's hairy, tomboyish and she's the "apple" of Mike's eyes. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif

Sandra wasn't "MACHO" at all in 28 Days, or While You Were Sleeping, or Speed, or Speed 2...........

"Murd3r 8y Num8ers"- B
When routine detective story- in this case, one inspired by the Leopold and Loeb case (which also inspired Hitchcock's underrated 1948 "real-time" thriller "Rope")- tries to up the ante on psychological danger on it's hero or heroine, always be weary. It worked in "The Silence of the Lambs" and "Hannibal" because those films was anything but routine to begin with. Here, it turns Sandra Bullock's no-bull homicide detective- great to see this side of Sandra for a change- into your usual protagonist with issues. It's a disappointing plot device in an otherwise solid, well-acted thriller. Sandra is terrific- at least when not shackled by her character's past, Ben Chaplin is effective as the rookie she's training, while Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt are creepy as the masterminds of the "perfect murder." The film- with a potent score by Clint Mansell (best known for "Pi" and "Requiem for a Dream")- is directed with atmosphere and intelligence by Barbet Schroeder, best known for "Reversal of Fortune" and "Single White Female," though this reviewer knows the director from 1998's laughable "Desperate Measures" and 1995's film noir remake "Kiss of Death." The story works, and storytelling assured, but I could envision another director- maybe a Christopher Nolan ("Memento") or Bryan Singer ("The Usual Suspects")- bringing a more interesting narrative approach to what is otherwise formula material. Still, good for a Friday night, and smart counter-programming to this week's other big release, "The Scorpion King."

It doesn't really interest me. too much like a bad Hitchcock rip off. and I still don't understand why studios have to always put #s in their title to substitute letters, like Th13teen Ghosts, completely ripping off Se7en

I was impressed by the guy who played Richard (Ryan Gosling). Whenever he was on screen, I couldn't keep my eyes off him. Reminded me a bit of Norton's performance in PRIMAL FEAR. Gosling looks familiar but I can't remember which films I've seen him in? As for the film itself, it held my interest the way a well-made TV movie would. And Bullock's Adam's apple wasn't as distracting. She should wear turtlenecks more often.

Ryan Golsing has been in many different projects. He played the Jewish Nazi in THE BELIEVER, that premiered recently on Showtime. He was Alan in REMEMBER THE TITANS. He played Kenny in the cult kid film FRANKENSTEIN AND ME opposite Burt Reynolds. He was on The Mickey Mouse Club for seasons 6-7. He also was on television shows HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS, PSI FACTOR, THE ADVENTURES OF SHIRLEY HOLMES, FLASH FORWARD, GOOSEBUMPS, READY OR NOT, and ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? He also had a role in BREAKER HIGH(a T.V. show I liked a lot) which played for a short time on UPN. Hope this helps.
I've been reading great things about THE BELIEVER, especially about Gosling's performance. I missed its premiere on Showtime, but there's a theatrical release scheduled. Can't wait to see it. I think the kid's going to be huge if he picks his projects more carefully. Even though he was terrific in it, MURDER BY NUMBERS is not the way to go.
