View Full Version : Unrated/Uncut DVDs that are worth getting

I'm curious. I remember some people saying something to the effect of that if a film faced numerous cuts (due to i.e. censorship and other reasons) before hitting theaters they then felt it was worth it to go to the trouble of getting the "Unrated" or "Uncut" DVD of said film when it came out. Which past films/films already on DVD fit that bill?

Kingdom of Heaven. Heads and tales above above the theatrical cut.

I think it depends on your taste in movies. Personally I'm a sucker for an unrated or director's cut and can't help buying them when they hit the shelf.

Some of the ones I like are:
Saw (all 3)
Basket Case
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Beginning
Bad Tast
Dawn of the Dead (remake)
Land of the Dead (remake)
Re-Animator
Feast
Haute Tension
Seed of Chucky
Evil Dead 1 & 2

Kingdom of Heaven director's cut. Almost feels like an entirely different movie than the theatrical version...and one of the best movies ever IMO.

I agree in totality. Missed in theaters, caught it on it's initial release and was impressed, and felt that Ridley Scott got the shaft. The extended cut was magnificent, added layers of complexity to the film and you actually saw Orlando Bloom act for the first time.

This DVD is great just for the special features, and how KoH evolved from a movie called Tripoli. Scott has been on a roll with his DVD packages, and I can't wait to see the new Blade Runner that's coming out this year.

In what way is this one worth it? I've heard this film sucks.

I second that. Horror movies aren't what they used to be.

Cannibal Holocaust

I've only seen the uncut version (which I now own) but from what my friends have told me, the uncut version is waaay more brutal and shocking than the original version released many years ago

And what's ironic (IMHO) is that due to technological advances (I'll call them) gore can be done extremely well and or very realistic now-a-days.

Three come to mind right away that were much better unrated on DVD than in theaters.

Chronicles of Riddick
King Arthur
The Punisher

I liked the story line of seeing how the family, particularly Leatherface comes to be. Also, you give me enough blood and guts and I'm happy (I'm just a sick puppy!)

Robocop Criterion is so much better than the theatrical cut.

To me it all depends on if you own the movie already.

Some unrated DVDs are awsome, but not quite enough to justify an extra twenty bucks when they didn't add very much at all. Saw 2 comes to mind as an example. (I popped for the first unrated version for the case alone.)

However movies like the Descent, and Hills Have Eyes that come out with the unrated on the day of release.....well theres just no other option IMO.

Only two movies I've ever 'rebought' were the Underworld: Extended, and Saw.......and apparently Kingdom of Heaven after seeing these reveiws on this thread.

If I'm not mistaken there were rated versions of those films available. But stores choose not to order in any copies 'cause they knew they'd never sell.

Yeah, stores are starting to do that. I know at work we've started ordering like ten times the amount of unrated than rated movies, simply because thats what people request.

The Marine Unrated was good. I'm not sure how it'd different than the rated version. Plus the unrated dvd has the rated version on it also. So you don't lose anything.

The different ending on the Descent unrated was much better than the theatrical cut. I would also recomend the Sin City expanded version(just because its a great great dvd.)

I'll second the following:

Kingdom of Heaven director's cut (one of my favorite movies)
The Descent (I saw the UK ending first and prefer it)

Also, the uncut version of Robocop is definitely worth mentioning as well. The two main scenes that I recall being changed are when Murphy is gunned down (excessively brutal and graphic, which actually increases both the power of his death and the sympathy for him) as well as the ED-209's introduction when he shoots up the OCP exec (which basically just shows him being shot a LOT more, probably the most squibs I've ever seen used).

So yeah, for the actual "uncut" definition, Robocop is the main one I can think of. Pick up the trilogy set if you haven't already to get it.

I forget how long ago but I picked up the Criterion Edition of Robocop.

To those who mentioned Kingdom of Heaven, are you refering to the 4-Disc edition? At 194 min.s isn't it (the film itself) divided over the first 2 discs? I hate that. I hate having to get up and change discs 1/2 way through the film.
