The Police to reunite for Grammy awards

01/30/2007 1:04 PM, AP

The Police will reunite to perform at this year's Grammys ceremony, the Recording Academy announced Tuesday.

The award-winning group, which won five Grammys and turned out hits such as "Roxanne" and "Every Breath You Take," will open the event — 23 years after breaking up amid internal conflict.

The band — singer Sting, drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers — fused reggae with pop and rock, and last performed together in 2003 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Sting fanned speculation of a Police reunion and tour when he told the Television Critics Association earlier this month that he and his former bandmates were "talking about" doing something to commemorate their 30th anniversary.

After the band split in 1984, he went on to more success as a solo artist and put out dreamy singles such as "Fields of Gold" and "Desert Rose." His latest album, a collection of 16th-century classical music called "Songs From the Labyrinth," was released in October.

Copeland examined his life in the Police in his music documentary "Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out," which premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival.

CBS will air the 49th annual Grammy Awards ceremony live from Los Angeles on Feb. 11.

I honestly never got why The Police achieved the success they did. I've heard most of their albums (maybe all) because some of my friends liked them. But none of them struck me as being anything more than mediocre. As for Sting himself. He's a total cock.

You think the Police are mediocre and Simon Cowell is a genius. I thought the Limeys had taste, you probably think Coldplay is great. I guess I shouldn't expect too much from a country that drives on the wrong side of the road.

I'm not smart? At least I can read the rules and understand that on these forums the opinions of your fellow schmoes are to be respected at all times. And where did I say that Simon Cowell was a fucking genius? The Police are, in my opinion, one of the most bewildering success stories of all time.

And what purpose did this serve? Such a dick thing to say.

I never got into the Police. I have kind of liked what I heard but not enough to seek them out. Sting on his own is almost as bad as U2. To elaborate, I hate U2, I think they are the worst band compared to their success rate in the world. Also the fact that I know a guy who loves U2 and I can't stand him, :p . I don't know any hardcore Police fans.

I mean, Roxanne is a genius song, but besides that, I could do without The Police as well.

P.S. Did that guy really say "limeys"?

Ok, hipo-limey-crite explain this to me: why don't you respect the opinions of Police fans? The answer is hipocrisy. You believe that the only opinion to be respected is your own because you are a fascist.

I can totally see why people don't like The Police... it's actually not that hard to believe at all. I consider them a guilty pleasure, so you guys can make fun of them all you want to. I don't care.

I believe you're referring to me...and I hardly proclaimed Cowell to be a genius. I simply said that he was the only AI judge who actually knew what he was talking about...which isn't exactly a feat considering he's working with a retarded lunk whose vocabulary consists of "yaw", "props" and "dawg" and a washed-up drunken midget who can barely string a sentence together.

Personally I think Sting and The Police are a fucking joke band, generally embraced - in the UK at least - by tree-huggers and Beaujolais sipping idiots...it's a diluted toff white boy reggae hybrid when all is said and done. But Sting is such a nice man who can talk to the animals and save starving brown children and still get home in time to bang his sourfaced Missus for a day or two...so lets not speak ill of the smarmy cunt eh!

Oh and when did you make the point about Brits not being able to think for themselves? Because I can't see it anywhere in the thread Sir. In fact you just appear to be spewing nonsensical jibber-jabber in order to arouse some 'Limey' fury.

Such fun weeeeee.

Why don't you just ignore his other fans and form an opinion that is uniquely yours?

My opinion is that he's a self-congratulatory asshat and his music is shit. The fact that I associate him with a certain type of person (and as previously stated I'm referring to the typical British fan) is neither here nor there and doesn't mean my opinion isn't my own.

I was just pointing out that he is adored by middle class lefties who want to make poverty history but would cross the street to avoid breathing the same air as a black fella. Or thirtysomething whitey who smokes a joint once a year and watches Green Wing.

You don't associate some musicians you dislike with people you generally haven't much time for either? Emo kids, skallywags, hicks etc.

My opinion is his music is pony spunk innit.

Ok, you have a point there. Although it seems like you described a typical Sting fan rather than someone who simply loves The Police (keeping in mind there are plenty of those in America). When I think of a Sting fan, I pretty much think the same thing you do...someone who drinks lattes and talks about typical yuppie shit and watches VH1. This is coming from a Sting fan (his old shit anyway).

Sorry if I sounded like an asshole earlier.

I seriously hope you are heading for a banning. I don't know what you expected to attain by spouting such fucking nonsense. One hand clapping perhaps? I have an opinion. I don't expect everyone to agree with that opinion but I do expect them to fucking respect it. You have been reported. Whatever happens will happen. Personally i'll be glad to see the back of you.

i cannot stand the police/sting they bore me senseless i think i have said this before in another thread.
anyways the funny thing about this thread is our american friends seem very excited by the reunion, whereas the brits who have posted are decidedly underwhelmed, not only that most music fans i know over here really could'nt give a monkeys about the police either.which has me thinking were they ever that big or has sting just pissed people off over here that much that no one cares.

I still don't understand why people hate The Police so much. People throw out words like "mediocre", or "boring", or "generically embraced"... i mean, I can understand preference and all that ball of wax, but seriously... can someone break it down for me? I think that for the time and era of music, they were pretty good.

Not great. but good.

The only song I like by The Police is "Every Breath You Take;" the rest I just find to be mediocre, including "Roxanne." Though I will admit their performance during the Grammys was pretty good.

Is that performance going to be their only "reunion?" Or are they planning a tour around the country or something? Not that I care too terribly much or would go if they do, I'm just curious. Cuz it's a pretty shitty reunion if they only play one song for one awards show, if you ask me.

It's cause they had a carasmatic front man, who wrote happy go lucky rock reggae songs about bottles and whores going off the clock, they are of a great list of british bands who thrieved by making midweight pop, theres a long lline of them, u2 being at the current top, I guess the u.s. had the dead and journey and lately the chilli peppers has taken the batton, I think a gabriel genisis reunion would be ace, but if it was a collins fronted one I'd rather eat my own sick.

well as i said they bored me,thought i better try and explain myself.
i consider the police along with a few other so called important artist's ie genesis(especially the phil collins lead stuff),and fleetwood mac as safe middle of the road artist's,their music does not offend me in anyway it just does not make me feel anything but blah blah blah whenever i hear it,i find it hard to get excited about a band who's lyrics include a doo doo do a daa daa daa is all i want to say to you,and are fronted by a man who has less personality than a worm,no sorry i find it hard to get excited about such an average band.

fleetwood mac have just never done it for me,oasis i can listen to when i just want to take my brain out and listen to something simple and easy on the ears, but they do not have an original piece of music in their whole catalogue they have stolen from everyone, the beatles, slade, status quo,the stone roses, the beach boys,t rex, infact it would be harder to find a band they have'nt stolen from.

I remember about a year and a half ago there was some rumor that The Smiths were getting back together for a world tour. Turns out, Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke just played together with some other musicians while Morrissey declined the invitation. If Morrissey wasn't so fucking stubborn then they would probably have gotten back together by now.
