I'm new to DVD collecting. I've established a 250$ budget per month to DVD purchasing, and have been collecting since early November. In this time, I have acquired what would seem a minuscule amount when compared to what you guys can purchase with the same amount. I have near 50 DVDs (15 TV on DVD sets not included)... yet I see some schmoes racking this amount alone in one month with a budget of 300$ US. Not that big a difference. My question is... is there somewhere special I should be going for deals? I live in a small maritime city with Futureshop, Walmart, HMV, CDPlus and MusicWorld being my main sources for collecting. Usually older releases are around 9.99-16.99; newer releases range from 19.99-24.99, and the higher end special editions can reach prices near 40.99.
Should I buy second-hand? Or save my money and make a trip to the US for a day of shopping, or what? I find it funny that you can buy some DVDs here for 30$, and find it in the US for less then 10$.
What's my best bet living in such a small Canadian city? Should I invest in a credit card and order online?

If you live in a small Maritime city, your best bet is Amazon.ca...depending on your movie taste, if you have any small dvd shops or record stores that sell movies those are good places to get quality second hand stuff for cheap, I've bought a lot of my Criterions and cult stuff from small shops for a fraction of the cost they sell them at say a Best Buy or Future Shop so search around your city for those small local shops.

Welcome to the forums! It sounds to me like you're in Fredericton (I am too), it's a nice place, and there are lots of places to buy DvDs here; Your best bets are the places you're already buying from, however, there are also pawn shops, the best is Digital World on Dundonald St. You can get DvDs for like $5.00, and Box sets are fairly cheap there too, lots of people bring in their stuff to support whatever habits they have, and Digital World only takes stuff in immaculate condition. So if you're gonna go used, check that place out. there are a couple of others, but that one's the best.

Somewhat like JackBoom said it depends on the kind of film your looking for. For mainstream major releases I'd say FutureShop is your best bet for low price's. When it comes to underground minor releases and cult films etc. I'd say go the internet route. Fellow Schmoes here who have experience (unlike me) can recommend (if you asked them) which places are best for which genre of film.

If you want some cheap places, always be sure to check out the second hand shelf at Blockbuster or EB Games. Sometimes you can luck out and find some quality stuff there.
