Since you seem to like some of the newer movies, try out
Wrong Turn
May
Dog Soliders (same guy dir. Descent)
Ginger Snaps
The Toolbox Murders remake
Most of those movies are easy to find.

American Werewolf in London is a John Landis classic from 1981
Scream put Wes back on top in 1996 (skip the sequels)
Hellraiser is a Clive Barker gem from 1987
Cronos from 1993 is Guillermo del Toro's re-imagining of the vampire legend
etc, etc, etc
The list can go on and on...If you really "recently got into horror movies" then the horror section at your local store is ripe for the picking. Go ask the hotest chick/dude in the place thier opion and I'm sure you'll get lucky.

You should definetly check out the Evil Dead Trilogy. I also recommend the original Nightmare on Elm Street.

Not sure if you would be into these, I know a lot of people like them, just be aware that they include real animals getting killed.
Besides some of the ones listed in previous replies, I'd recommend Jaws, Childs Play, Sleepy Hollow, Hard Candy, Little Red Riding Hood, The Hitcher (original), From Dusk Til Dawn, Blade Trilogy, Feast, John Carpenters Vampires, The Thing (remake), the Re-Animator series, Predator, Saw trilogy, Psycho.
If you like good campy fun, Dead/Alive, Slither, Shaun of the Dead, Seed of Chucky, Bad Taste, Army of Darkness and Bubba Ho Tep, are musts.

If you've never seen Alien, I would highly recommend it.
