WARNING SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE SHINING is one of my all time favorite horror movies of all time. jack nicholson gave a fucking outstanding performence playing Jack Torrence in the original 1980 version starring alongside Shelley Duvall. Directed by Stanley kubrick.

The origianl is like i said amazing in every way possible. Jack gave it his all and play a fuckng nut case to a fucking T!!!!!! Always send shivers down my spine.

THE SHINING (REMAKE TV MINI SERIES) 1997. 17 years later we get a more faithfull adaptation to stephing kings book (I have not read the book) 6 Hours run time i think. of a film. 3 parts. Starring Steven Webber from tvs wings and stars along side Rebecca De Mornay. Directed by Maters Of Horror series creator/director Mick Garris.(my favorite series of movies airs on showtime).

(First of all im going to get a lot of shit for this) The REMAKE IMHO is way better than the original. I know what you are thinking? Why i said such a thing is this, Like i said i love Nicholsons performence but his appearence / look in all his movies he looks insane. I mean thats why he was great for the part but soon as you start watching th movie it looks like jack wants to kill his family right then and there at the start of the picture.

Now Steven Webbers performence was the real Jack Torrence. From the start of the film you see this very calm and relaxe guy. You see he has his temper tamptrons here and there but when the man gets pissed off look out. At the end of the series I was blown away like WOW he is ficking nuts and insane. He puts nicholson in his place. I fucking believed his performence. the way he looked with bllod on his face and bloody teeth. I was disturbed.

The Reamke ending is way better IMHO. 10 years later we see danny graduate from high school and the first thing you notice is WTF!!! He looks like his make belive friend Tony. It was him in the future warning himself in the past to not go to the overlook hotel. Whicj was a huge suprise to me. Then ass soon as danny gets his diploma and walks back to sit he sees his dad and bust into tears. His dad say "good job, I love you". Danny says "thats what im missing." That was an ending to remember.

So i woud definitly have to go with the Reamke.

ORIGINAL - 8/10
REMAKE - 10/10

i'd have agreed that the readaptation was better if they had used a different kid, the one in the miniseries was soooooooo annoying

In my opinion, "The Shining" did not work at all in a book format. It actually ranks among the worst that Stephen King has ever penned for me. With that said I think Kubrick's adaption is brilliant, Jack Nichelson may be overacting like a hamster on amphetamines but I don't care, I think his performance is splendid. From a visual standpoint I the movie is gorgerous too, the isolation and weirdness of the Overlock hotel really came through. Keeping in mind my dislike of the novel I thought the miniseries was pretty dull and unmemorable, which is often when King's work (no matter if good or bad) is transfered to the screen.

What I'm trying to say is that Kubrick made an awsome movie from an awkard novel. While the miniseries is more "King" it just doesn't come close.

It's funny you say that considering the book is thought of as a King classic.

Anyway hate the remake but both the book and movie are awesome although seperate entities.

Ohhhh God yes!!! I so agree that little twirp kid was just too annoying for words and to add more salt to that injury that little dork then got a gig on my favorite soap opera as well.
I was like kill me now, kill me now!!!!

Anyway, I guess I just got warped by what I knew and the Kubrick one is the one I prefer to watch whenever I get a hankering for The Shining.

True, most King-fans like the book. I read it before I saw the movie (Kubricks of course) and it took me ages to get through it, it bored me to tears. Matter of taste I guess, but I do enjoy some of King's work.

if you're comparing the book to the movie, i'd go with the remake... except, like you guys said, the kid. i couldn't stand him. but really, i love Kubrick's movie. by far, i like the book the best out of all 3, but i feel it unfair to adapt a King novel to tv.
my biggest complaint about Kubrick's version though (besides it being an almost completely different story) was the casting of Jack and Wendy. don't get me wrong, Shelly Duvall and Jack Nicholson acted it beautifully, but they weren't the pretty people from the book. i like it much more when the beautiful people go crazy.

You know, after wondering this myself I think I decided that he did not want to be with Wendy by choice.
I think maybe he was drunk and looked for an easy lay and he knocked her up and then considering the times decided to marry her and stick around for the kid's sake.
I think this because he is clearly not in love with her, this is evident through his meanness towards her.
This being pinned down sort of thing is the real
root of his evil.
I have not read the book in years so I do not even remember if their relationship was even explained.

Not only is Kubrick's movie better than the t.v. series, it's better than the book as well.

I thought the TV Miniseries was pretty awful, along with every other Stephen King TV movie I've seen...which I'll admit has only been Carrie and Rose Red, but they were TERRIBLE.

It isn't even much more faithful to the book, anyway. Sure, it follows it more closely but while the 1980 took interesting changes that got better results, the TV movie's changes just cheapened it...ESPECIALLY the ending.

And it wasn't scary, either! I hate the kind of horror film where a fireplace or something will start on its own and that's supposed to be scary for some reason. The Shining miniseries has an embarrasing amount of moments like that.

I thought the kid was extremely annoying and was nothing compared to Danny Boyle, who did an impressive job for a child that age.

I'll take the axe over the croquet mallet any day.

I'll also take the hedge maze over the cheesy CGI hedge animals. Or whatever they're called.

So I will also have to say that the 1980 film was better than the TV movie AND the book. I hated the miniseries, and while I generally liked the book and thought it had some creepy moments, I thought the Kubrick film took a more challenging and implicit road.

The Shining (1997) was much more faithful to the novel. Except for one aspect; the mini-series wasn't scary at all. The book was scary as shit, so was Kubricks' version. Now I'll take the horrifying version any day over the remade crap version.

P.S. The little boy that played in the 1997 version looks ridiculous, it's as if he's a toddler version of a chipmunk with his cheeks constantly looking as though they are nut stuffed.

I would definitely have to disagree with Derek237 about the movie being better than the book. All movies end up having a morality tale ending, the good guys always win and the bad guy gets fucked. Very few of Stephen Kings books are like that, prime example; Cujo, remember the little boy Tad?, yeah in the book he fucking croaks from heat stroke. I've never found any movie that was better than the book that preceded it.

The book is just as captivating as its screen adaptation. Kings version of The Shining leaves a lot to be desired.

I've never read the book and couldn't give a fuck which film is more faithful to it. The original is a classic.

The TV adaption is one of the worst movies ever made. It's way too long, fucking boring and devoid of all sense of atmosphere, scares and tension. The kid looked like a fucking chipmunk! God knows what that ugly little shit looks like now! I bet his parents are so ashamed of him ha ha! Anyone got a picture of the snot nosed brat?

The bathroom lady was cool though.
