Joss Whedon Off Wonder Woman!
Source: Joss Whedon February 2, 2007
Joss Whedon has announced on his official Blog that he will no longer be writing and directing the Wonder Woman movie at Warner Bros. Pictures.:
SATIN TIGHTS NO LONGER. Joss will not be fighting for our rights after all.
You (hopefully) heard it here first: I'm no longer slated to make Wonder Woman. What? But how? My chest... so tight! Okay, stay calm and I'll explain as best I can. It's pretty complicated, so bear with me. I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated.
Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional. We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that's never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time. I don't think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk. I like to think it rolled around the rim a little bit, but others may have differing views.
The worst thing that can happen in this scenario is that the studio just keeps hammering out changes and the writer falls into a horrible limbo of development. These guys had the clarity and grace to skip that part. So I'm a free man.
Well, sorta. There is that "Goners" movie I can finally finish polishing, and plenty of other things in the hopper I've wanted to pursue. I'm as relieved as I am disappointed, and both of those things lead to drink, so that's a plus. Truly, you may be hearing some interesting things brewing in the coming months. But all potential jets therein will be visible.
But most importantly, I never have to answer THAT question again!!!! And you don't have to link to every rumor site! Finally and forever: I never had an actress picked out, or even a consistant front-runner. I didn't have time to waste on casting when I was so busy air-balling on the script. (No! Rim! There was rim!) That's the greatest relief of all. I can do interviews again!
Thanks for your time. You are the people who make the world go 'round. Or, no, science does that.
This announcement comes on the heels of yesterday's news that Warner Bros. has picked up a script from script from newcomers Matthew Jennison and Brent Strickland.

Totally called it not even 24 hours ago.
quick thought, but this reminds me of the "captain america" theorem, if everyone at the studio is thinking one thing, and Joss Wheddon is thinking something else,......I'm sorry dude, but I have to side with Joss wheddon. It just goes to show that studio heads don't understand comics, and shouldn't mess with a perfectly good production process. On the bad side, this means that the odds of WW sucking royally just skyrocketed. I'm so depressed by this news, I can't even tell you. WW is comic book royalty, one of only three characters that has been in constant publication since the golden age (Superman and Batman being the other two), and she should be treated as such. I would rather they NOT make a WW movie, than that they make one that stinks, which it looks like they're hell bent on. Gosh, I just don't know what to say, I'm so angry and frustrated, I feel like the toes of the fans has just been trampled on. This age of comic book based movies is going to eventually end, all it's going to take is one high profile total flop for it to happen, and I'm terrified that WW is going to be that film.

Thats what I was thinking. I don't think a big budget Wonder Woman action film could ever be taken seriously by the mass audiences.

I would have liked to see what he would have done with it. He has promised some nice suprises for us in the coming months...Serenity 2 (I wish:( ) Whatever Joss makes I will be first in line.

Ummm...this is strange. It ain't Wonder Woman, but it is DC property and another project that's been floating forever.
Goyer off of Flash? (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=110273944&blogID=225189736&MyToken=5496ff0c-f883-4947-b238-fc2513d75a72)

This is disappointing. I'd been warming up to this project more and more as the days progressed. I wasn't exactly thrilled with Whedon's choice for Wonder Woman though (Cobie Smulders...I'm guessing he was serious, right?).
That other script sounds intriguing. I do love the idea of setting this in the past. I had a similar idea for Superman and it'd be cool to see how a WW2 Wonder Woman movie would turn out.
Whatever direction WB goes in, I'm still all for a WW movie and just I hope they find some solid talent.

No way does he juggle this and the Superman franchise at the same time.

"Every day with that fucking spider..."
Seriously, I'm considering seppuku if Whedon and Goyer (alright, Blade Trinity sucked, but the way he directed it would suit a Flash movie) are off WW and Flash.

The ONLY reason I wanted to see a Wonder Woman film was because of Joss' involvement.
If Serenity 2 or some sort of resumption of the Firefly series (Sci-Fi network?) can't happen, I hope Fox gives Joss a call about the X-Men franchise. Joss is in the middle of writing one of the most acclaimed runs on the X-Men book in years. He would be a great choice to helm X-Men 4 or a spin-off movie featuring young mutants.

Fucking hell.
The good news is, though, that the script they DID buy recently has been reviewed and the reviews are pretty much the same kind of reviews the Batman Begins script got when it was leaked. I.E. They're great.

I probably couldn't care less about the project; though I do think Whedon was probably the right man for it.

WTF are you talking about. That was Bryan Singer, AND even HE wasn't even present the day that awful line was used.

Well...to be more accurate that was a line that David Hayter wrote, not Bryan Singer. ;)

I really might not care about this movie depending on who is playing the lead. I love Whedon, mostly from Serenity and the Firefly series. I was excited about him directing it, but I think that there are definitely some other directors out there who could do well.
I'm ironically more interested in WHO THE HELL IS PLAYING THE FREAKING LEAD PEOPLE?!?!?!??!??!?!!??

I believe the line in question is, "Do you know what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning? The same thing that happens to everything else." Which, btw, I like.

Yes, and contrary to some, that is indeed a line that Whedon wrote along with "It's me." "Prove it." "You're a dick."

A movie about a big breasted woman in star-spangled shorts tying men up with a lasso to make them tell the truth can only be good if Russ Meyer films it. And he's dead.

When you say the lines in a Whedon style you could totally see that he wrote it. XD

This is a mixed blessing and I hope we see it in the new version.

I always liked Stan Lee's take on Wonder Woman, or atleast the outfit. I think something similar to the pic above would be more suitable for film....

Well, that sure sucks, a Wonder Woman taken from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer mold sure would've been interesting and a hell of a lot more interesting than some of the comic book stinkers that have been forced upon us.

Can't say I'm interested in this at all.

Yeh I'm surprised it caught on with me as much as it has, they did a little expose on Wonder Woman on Ifilm and all the people they had commenting on it were homosexual men. So I don't know what that says about me, I'm sort of into the right wing militaristic angle myself.

i use to hate wonder woman.
but over the years i`ve read ww:the contest and that got me hooked and now the new series.
so i can`t wait for this to come out i don`t think it will gross batman box office may`be more daredevil.
but then again depends on who they cast and who they market the movie at.

i think the idea of a wonder woman fiulm, is stupid, it will either be a boring film like superman returns or it will be childich like f4, either way it will be gay, i just cannot see anyone pullling it off

It will be difficult judging by Hollywood's past attempts at creating strong female leads (see Catwoman and Aeon Flux as examples), despite the preponderance of such characters in the sci-fi genre.
Wonder Woman was the first of such characters I believe.
