To continue the tradition of bankholdup's kickass tourney, I'm going to do Rolling Stone's Top 500 greatest albums tourney. The same basic rules apply. One vote per match. Unlike the previous tourneys, I'm not going to let this one die out, because it took a shitload of time matching everything up.

Round 1

Match 1:
#14. Abbey Road, The Beatles
vs.
#310. BloodSugarSexMagik, Red Hot Chili Peppers

Match 2:
#137. The Chronic, Dr. Dre
vs.
#321. Sail Away, Randy Newman

Match 3:
#75. Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin
vs.
#369. Siamese Dream, The Smashing Pumpkins

Match 4:
#36. Tapestry, Carole King
vs.
#405. Rid of Me, P.J. Harvey

Match 5:
#256. The Velvet Rope, Janet Jackson
vs.
#400. Nas, Illmatic

I only needed a vote between Zeppelin and the Pumpkins, for future reference, this is what we'll do in case of a tie.

Sorry, I just noticed a typo... Siamese Dream was 360 and not 369. Those numbers are too damn close on the keyboard.

This from the guy who said Bob Dylan was boring? I gleefully await the perhaps inevitable moment when Achtung Baby faces one of the very large number of Bob Dylan albums on this list, just out of spite. :D

And remember, even if Achtung beats one of them, there'll still be ten or so in line to take its place. ;)

Logic? You're acting as if I put any effort into that exchange at all. It was a nonsensical, lighthearted jab, since we're talking about MUSICAL PREFERENCES here. I didn't think that you'd take it so seriously.

Next time I'll be sure to come up with a thesis and some adequate support for you, though.

Just advance Dookie. 'Cause it's better. :p

Or save them both for the first match of the second round or something like that, and you could just do a match with three choices in that round. If that makes any sense (not feeling particularly articulate at the moment).

No, I want to get this out of the way now. Now, I don't want to do this because I shouldn't have to change my vote just because someone won't come along and break the tie....so I'll get back up on my cross and switch my vote to Dookie....even though Eminem blows Green Day out of the water (not like that's saying a lot).

Sorry to Big Star. #1 Record's really good, but hell. It's London Calling. Does anyone know if Third/Sisters-Lovers was on the list? I'll vote for that in a heartbeat.

And I never really "got" Sonic Youth. Some good parts here and there, but they never caught on for me.

Sonic Youth is one of those hit and miss bands. "Dirty Boots" is a fucking badass song, and most of Daydream Nation is hardcore too, but c'mon....Straight Outta Compton, man. Hell, the rest of the record could have completely sucked ass but Gangsta Gangsta would've still made it a great record.

Does anyone else find it incredibly idiotic that they allowed greatest hits albums (or even collections) to be nominated? Even if it's the only way to get greats like Robert Johnson, Ike and Tina, or the Supremes on there, compilations are cheating.

It depends. Some guys like Robert Johnson and Hank Williams who never really came out with any whole records but deserve to be on there should be recognized. Plus, some compilations are classics. My main issues with this list:

1. Four Beatles albums in the top ten is way too many. Two is enough
2. Some artists are way overrepresented.

An album is an album. There's a certain degree of skill that goes into making something that people will like, and it isn't fair if the "album" is composed of material that the creators already know people like. The fact is, Robert Johnson and Hank Williams never went through the process of creating an actual album, so they shouldn't be on a list of the best albums. That doesn't make them any less good or important, it just means that this is a category they aren't eligible for. Some compilations are indeed classics, but they're still made up of material whose success has already been monitored.

This isn't exactly the most serious list out there. Hell, FOUR out of the top 10 albums are from The Beatles. I have nothing against Sgt. Pepper's being #1 (although I think Pet Sounds or Teaser and the Firecat deserve that spot), but this list is extremely slanted. James Brown, Neil Young, The Beatles, Elton John, The Byrds.....even my beloved Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen appear waaaayy too often. Hell, if you took away some of their albums you might be able to include other albums that deserve to be on there like In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

It's Rolling Stone, their taste and selections are always so ridiculously narrow minded. They're stuck in the '60s (and with boring taste to boot).

If Dylan or Wilson or any other 60's hero releases a relatively well-reviewed album they will promote it heavily. I'm a fan of "Modern Times" but realizing that it's atop their annual list is a good indication of where they are at.

I'm not sure that you guys realize that the list was compiled through a vote...the editors didn't make the choices themselves. As much as I agree that Rolling Stone has way too many wet dreams over classic rock bands (Dylan is my favorite musician, but I don't really even like Modern Times, nevermind best of the year), the way the list turned out can't be blamed on them. There are a lot of Beatles albums, but that's just the way the numbers turned out. You could question the kind of people they used in their industry poll, I don't know what that would turn out like, I haven't really looked over it. And Brando, I'm not sure what you're talking about. If anything, Brown got fucking ripped off on that list, not only are two of his four (which isn't that high of a number in the first place, considering his importance and general greatness) entries compilations, but they didn't really list his best albums (IMO, that is; I'm thinking of some of the late 60's live material). And I would personally cry if a Cat Stevens album was anywhere near number one (not tears of joy, mind you), but I guess that's just me. But looking over the list, I don't see that many albums that, disregarding my own taste, don't deserve to be there. The Beatles and Dylan are on there a lot, but hte fact is, they made a lot of great fucking albums. If you want to make room for Neutral Milk Hotel, get rid of the compilations instead of needlessly trimming off great albums by the Boss. The greatest hits packages are the main ones that don't deserve the space.

I was listing any albums by artists that it seemed I saw a lot of on that list. I didn't know exactly how many albums he had on there. I like James Brown but I wouldn't say he got ripped off.

I'm not necessarily saying that they should include compilations, I'm just saying....this is a list of the greatest albums of all time. This isn't a list of the "Top 500 Studio Releases of All-Time." Even though there didn't seem to be any real criteria for this list, it should have been about albums with importance, cultural impact, significance, etc. If it was a compilation that helped change the face of music, then it belongs here.

Oh, and even if Teaser and the Firecat shouldn't belong on the top of the official list, it's always on the top of mine....right next to Pet Sounds.

Now, I would like to remind everybody that there's a vote going on right now. Topic ended.
