View Full Version : Should I start to worry?

I was just reading about Blu-Ray and HD-DVD so I'm getting alittle worried about my DVD collection. I have near 500 DVD's. So should I start selling now or wait? Can someone please fill me in more on this HD DVD and Blu-Ray thing.

I wouldn't bother. Just stick with regular DVDs.

At this point, don't even bother. If you have a really good DVD Player, high-definition isn't that big a jump.

Yeah. I'll be fucked if I'm going to go and re-start my already way too huge collection, just becuase of a higher definition format. I already made the painful but necessary transition from VHS to DVD. Fuck doing it all over again. I'm not that rich!
The 5 ye4ars down the track yet another even better and higher format will be released. It's not only the actual movies that are being upgraded, but all the other equipment to play them on. Fuck all that shit for a joke! :D

It's going to be a very, very, VERY long while before they transfer all the 35mm prints of these old movies to HD or Blue Ray...
Keep your collection. You'll regret it for sure if you don't.

the way i look at it is that i already own 1300 or so dvd's so i wont be buying all of them on hd. I have about 10 hd movies and about 8 blu ray.. if its new and it will look good on hd then i get it on hd. Then there are some older ones that are a must for me on hd like million dollar baby and batman begins. Im buying hd now for new ones but only if its a benefit.. Movies that i love like last kiss and idiocracy. although i love em they wont benefit form a hd translation as much as movies like pretige will

Fuck Blue-ray and HD.
The quality a good dvd can bring to the tabel is more then good enough for me.

I've heard from semi-reliable sources that this whole blu-ray and HD idea is going belly up because like it's been said on here, most people who would invest in the hassle of these new formats are people who obsess over movies and have huge dvd collections. There's only one problem; they have huge dvd collections.
I think it's going to be a while before anyone has to worry about replacing their dvds with blu-rays.

Indeed, so far I'm sticking with my ever-growing DVD collection. And even if I eventually start getting HDs, that won't render the DVDs completely unuseable. I won't be REPLACING my collection with HDs under any circumstances anyway, and since HD players can also play regular DVDs (I think), there really isn't a problem.

If you have any sort of common sense whatsoever, why would you replace your regular dvds. Regular dvds look just fine, unless you're anal and nitpick over every little thing. When the format wars are over, and the price drops on the hd dvds, then you should start buying them, but don't replace the dvds you already have. Unless of course you're a completist.

I have a Blueray player on my PS3, and it came with a few Blueray DVD's. I have to say that it looks better than HD-DVD, but I won't be purchasing Bluerays on a consistent basis, because DVD's are cheaper, and the quality is almost as good as Blueray or HD-DVD.

Yeah I'm thinking of getting my PS3 so this worries me. To get Blu-Ray but if Blu-Ray fails im stuck with a useless thing. So I think I'll stick with DVD's like you all are saying. Thanks for the input everyone.

Yes, re-buy everything, despite that DVDs will still be backwards compatible, becuase if you dont no one will like you anymore.

it would be a stupid idea to "upgrade" so many movies with HD dvd, unless like what many have said already you love everything nice and tidy...OR if you have a huge huge HUMONGOUS tv which requires higher qual dvd for best crisp quality (im guessing here, judging by resolution of those tvs)
what i would do in your place is narrow down your all time favorites and then get that HD blu ray you so want... in my case I'd get an HD Bluray dvd for Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but then why tha fuck would I need it when Extreme Edition is probably the BEST example of what state of the art NEW transfer looks like.

Well, I think HD is a pretty noticable improvement. That said, it's not like DVDs are shit. I've heard that "up-converter" DVD players make regular DVD look near HD quality - though I have not seen that myself.
To me, if you want to make your DVDs look better, get a progressive scan TV. The picture looks so much better than an interlaced TV.
I say skip HD/Blu-Ray and just wait for the next next-generation in home video, which should be about fifteen years from now.

I wouldn't, but I wouldn't know very well I don't really have a big or good HD television. Again some players will probably have backwards compatibility. I'm waiting out till a whole new thing comes, whether it be some sort of chip or what. These dvds are working great for me.

I would think that oyu could keep the vast majority of your dvds.
I myself am only going to be rebuying the big as shit movies. The ones where watching them in HD is truly a new experience, ie. King Kong and other effects heavy epics. As time goes on and one format sticks I will simply start buying them in that format instead of old dvds. Maybe as time goes on and years pass you can slowly replace some of you dvds with the new shit if better versions are out. But seriously, is Miami Vice better in HD than in standard?
And just ignore the people who post nonsense, even if they do have cool avatars.

You guys must be insanely rich if you can afford 1000+ DVDs!!
I've got like 30 and I consider half of them to be not worth the money with hindsight.
The way I look at it, if I'm not going to rent it 10+ times at $1.50 each, then there is no reason to pay 15 dollars to own it.
And lets be honest how many of you watch your DVDs more than once let alone 10 times?
But then again I don't get the whole 'collecting' thing.

*breathe*
I still think it's kind of nutty to re-buy all of your DVD's. They ARE backwards compatible, so I dont really see the point.
In terms of comparing formats (DVD to HD-DVD or Blu-ray) it's no where near, say, BETA to VHS, and no difference in terms of compatibility, which is the reason everyone had to buy their movies on DVD when it came out (because, obviously, you cant play a VHS in a DVD or vice versa)
The difference in quality is comparable to VHS vs DVD, but without the compatibility issues therefore encountered.
Even then, only the most high-end of systems, including the $100 cords and everything, will be able to *see* that difference.
To me, it's not worth the investment to re-buy, but you should go ahead and get one of the newer systems.

Smart ass posts in no way show the inadequacies of the real life poster. Look, you're an infant schmoe, you don't know how things really run around here. Once you've been here for awhile you'll realize not a week goes by that one of these threads comes around. After a year of dealing with threads like this you begin to answer them in a more facetious manner.
As far as your "half the people who post shit like that would be too shit scared to do it in real life" comment, you're right. The thing is, this is the internet, and this is a forum. I'm not going to go up to some guy I don't know and be a smart ass, but when I'm part of an online community, things are a little different.
Loosen the fuck up a little bit. Don't get all bent out of shape when someone is a smart ass, don't report a post where someones being a smart ass.
This is a movie forum, where our movie reviews tend to be pretty smart ass themselves, thus our posts sometimes reflect that as well.

I preassume you have two consoles because you want to be able to play any and all games there are? That is to say, I know that some games are brand exclusives, i.e. for and will play on a PS3 only or a XBOX only.

I'm not speaking for others but, they don't annoy or offend me. As long as the person uses one of the "Smilies" I'm good. When one doesn't use a "Smilie" someone (multiple someones) is bound to think your not joking. To joke and not use a "Smilie" is not proper "nettakit". I am with the majority here, the DVD format is too new for them to expect us to switch to another format so soon plus they realize this and are making both format backwards compatible.
DVD was an interesting beast to say the least, unlike VHS many people have amassed large collections for any number of reasons including the fact that dvds are very price friendly (VHS in the beginning ranged in $40-50 range and this was in the 80's, inflation would put that price much higher)
I own nearly 1000 dvds (940 to be exact) and I owned about only a 1/5th of that on VHS (150-200, I don't rightly remember), how many can say the same for their dvd collections I bet quite a few. And I had 20 years to amass that collection rather than just 5 or 6 with dvds (then again to be fair I didn't get my first job tell 1992 and money that was my own, so maybe more like 10 years). But still I never held a true desire to build a film library with VHS as I do with DVD.
Then comes in the whole warring factions, I am not about to buy a format that could very well lose that war and be stuck with a dead format when regardless of who wins they will both support DVD.
I can wait and see because if I buy a dvd I know it will be supported who knows if 10 years down the road if BluRay or HDDVD will be the given format.
I will be like that little old man with the huge record collection who refuses to go to cds solely (he may buy new releases on cd but hes got the record for the older stuff) because it would take to much time and effort to replace even a portion of my dvd collection
