Roman Polanski's next directing effort will be his biggest undertaking yet in terms of scale, subject and budget.

"Pompeii" is a dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of Mt. Vesuvius just before and during its eruption. The budget is projected to be $130 million, the director said.

The story's protagonist is a young engineer who has to repair an enormous aqueduct whose destruction threatens the Roman Empire. He finds himself enmeshed in politics and romance. The film takes place over three days and the final act is the volcanic eruption and the destruction of the aqueduct, which stretched 60 miles and served hundreds of thousands of people.

It is based on the bestseller of the same name by "Fatherland" novelist Robert Harris, who is writing the script. Filming will begin in Italy this summer.

Bah, I truly hate disaster films.

Me too. Isn't the world already fucked up enough? Apparently not, especially in the eyes of movie directors. Plus this is based on true historical events. So, I'm there. :D

I can't resist...as much as Danger^Cart hates disaster films, I have an equally large soft spot for them :p. Maybe it's some kind of sadistic quality in my nature...but in any case, I'm really looking forward to this one cause it's not only a disaster film of the best kind (volcanoes of course) but it's also about a subject I've always been really fascinated by (Pompeii) and feel that there's been a surprising lack of films on...

And with Polanski, it could really be an excellent disaster film and not just a popcorn flick.

I've been facinated with Pompeii since I've been a child, so put an accomplished director behind the helm, and i'm there!

It does sound interesting, but I'll reserve judgment until I see a trailer or read some reviews.
