View Full Version : Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero - April 17th, 2007

Trent Reznor has announced his 5th album, Year Zero, for release on April 17th. The album comes out just under 2 years after his previous release, With Teeth. This is a record for Reznor, who usually has 5 year breaks between albums. Year Zero will also be Reznor's return to the concept album. The first single is rumoured to be called, "Survivalism". One track name is already confirmed: "The Beginning of the End".
Well, obviously I'm excited for this with NIN being my favorite musical artist. Not gonna lie, I'm hoping this will be great, considering With Teeth was a letdown. Reznor has made 2 masterpieces (The Downward Spiral and The Fragile), hopefully this will join those 2 albums.
Reznor has already announced tour dates for Europe, Japan and Australia.

Please, Trent, give us another The Downward Spiral / The Fragile... I need it after "The Collector" and "With Teeth"... God, I hate those songs. I like the rest of the album (although it took me a while to get into it), but those two songs suck. And hardcore.

I took me a LONG time to get into the song, With Teeth. But now I love it. I agree about The Collector, it's the worst song he's written. I pray that I never have to hear that song live. I think this will be some of his best work.
On another subject, I can't wait to see what this guy does with his stage show. The With Teeth tour had one of the coolest stage setups I've ever seen.

It took me some time to get used to With Teeth as well, but I really like it now too.
The Collector isn't great, but I don't think it's that bad either.
Nothing NIN have made is bad to me. :p
But another Downward Spiral would be appreciated on this.
And damn me for never seeing an NIN show...I'm too scared. :p :D

Now that I've finally seen Mastodon live, I'm making it my mission to see a NIN show. Although I'll probably have to travel 5 or 6 hours. I think it'll be worth it, though, in the end.

In terms of quality I agree that I hope it is up to par with Downward Spiral and Fragile, but I like With Teeth a lot.
As far as sound is concerned, I just hope Reznor keeps pushing forward and discovering new avenues of creativity. I need to see them again...best live act ever.

Yep. I always say, even if you don't care for his music, you should see them live. They bring the house down EVERY SINGLE TIME. C'mon, what other mainstream artist has the guts to bring a clothe down in front of the stage for 3 songs and project images on them?

Saw them twice last year (St. Louis, and Chicago) and I'll be seeing them every chance I can get this year. Unlike the majority it seems, I wasn't disappointed with With_Teeth.
That said, I cannot wait for this album. Nine Inch Nails are one of my favorite bands (right next to Tool) and anytime I hear about new shit from Reznor I become as giddy as a school girl.

Well, I have to disagree with you on that, but I would place it #2. The Downward Spiral to me is his best record. I just see it as more focused than The Fragile. But I also think that The Fragile benefits from being more diverse. 2 amazing albums still. Rock fans should definately look into both.

I just gave it a spin. And you're right...it's no Closer and it's no March Of The Pigs. For some reason Nine Inch Nails music now warrants no more than a shrug from me. It used to sound exciting. Now it sounds like it's trying to sound exciting. And when you have to try to sound exciting there's something wrong. None of their albums since The Downward Spiral have done anything for me. Perhaps it was just too high a benchmark.

Well part of me thinks that Trent Reznor has had his cake eaten it and then opened a bakery and is giving out buns to anyone with a greed for black ticky buns, Since he let Manson into the world hes had to settle for being the pepsi of industrail goth pomp, It nolonger sounds angry or angergetic it sounds like his keyboard has wind, BLESS

For some reason, "My Violent Heart" reminds me a lot of Gabriel Mann's "My Little Box". But then the chorus and the synth solo kicked that thought from my head. Sounds damn good. It grows on me a little more with every listen, but I liked it to begin with, unlike the first time I heard "The Hand That Feeds", which I love now.

While it's obvious he will never get close to the brilliance of The Downward Spiral or The Fragile, this is miles ahead of anything off of With Teeth and for that I am happy. This song actually sounds like a demo for a song cut from Pretty Hate Machine if anything.

The more I think about With Teeth, the more boring I find it. Sorry, it had to be said. I don't even listen to it anymore. Pretty Hate Machine rules though. Broken still gets played a lot. That EP releases a lot of tension and anger.
I actually wanted Trent to hang it up after With Teeth, but after hearing what he's got cooking up, I take that back. It sounds like he might be hitting another cliff in his musical career. I think given the fact that it's a full on concept album really helps. He does that shit really well. The last time he did a 100% concept album, it was a masterpiece.
The one thing I will continually praise NIN for are the live shows. There is no rock band out there that performs with the intensity or audacity that they do.

"Pretty Hate Machine" = classic.
"Broken" = awesome
"Downward Spiral"=very good with some classic songs, but overall I think it`s a little overrated and it gets stale if you listen to it too much.
"The Fragile"=absolutley brilliant, definetly my favorite NIN album and a huge improvement over "DS" for me.
"With Teeth"=NIN-by-numbers. BOR-ING.

Saying they are overrated is a slight error in my opinion. Nine Inch Nails is the most important industrial band that will probably ever exist. They took a genre that no one thought could be commercialized and he commercialized it. He was thrust to the front of the industrial movement in the late 80's with one album. Bringing much attention to that genre of music. What he got instead was hatred from all the other industrial bands. They were probably pissed off because they worked for years trying to make it big and someone came around and did it in two. Although they claim industrial was for a certain crowd and not meant to go mainstream. But they(Ministry and Skinny Puppy and the likes) also saw record sales rise and they became more popular within mainstream music. While bands like Ministry and Skinny Puppy came before NIN, their careers wouldn't be shit if it wasn't for NIN. Not to mention NIN, somewhat helped by The Smashing Pumpkins, pretty much carried the rock flag in mainstream music from 94-00.
Just my opinion.

oh i thought you's given up, depeche mode made industrial music poular in the early 80's but I do not think this makes them the greatest industrail band in history. Industrial was a movement hat existed in amounst fetishist and wierdos, it wasnever ment to fill stadiums it was ment to challenge people and push the posibilties of music, if one looks at he work of Genesis P-Orridge who was an inovator and has allways moved fawards, you wil find many a master piece, I am not say that DEpeche mode were even industrial, just a bunch of laether clad pipe bangers from essex, but saying that nin or for that matter ministry are industrail is like saying blink 182 are punk or that ub40 are dub.

Eh, I can kind a see his point. But they were more of a European pop group. NIN was the first industrial band to break free and gain notoriety in mainstream, which brought a lot of attention of the genre. I'm not denying DM influence on industrial bands, hell Reznor admits his love for DM.

Um did you read my previous rant! alan moulder(of depeche) produced nin and manson and corgan, even the killers, depeche mode, i'm well aware of this but my point is that depeche mode never cared that they would be pecieved as a pop band, its like guns and roses pretending they were metal, when they were not, I don't rteally think that nin really are very indutrail, its all surface and polish, nin are pop, they nver pushed the boundrys, ministry are pop as are skinny puppy, mason would conquer hes happy being a pop icon, why aint trent?

But doesn't this kinda depend on how narrow your definition of industrial is? I'm no expert on this particular genre but it seems that you're letting your dislike of mainstream sensibilities get in the way of which particular genre a band should be filed against. I wouldn't really call NIN pop though. Whether or not their music is polished or not (and I do think it is) it's too abrasive to be labelled pop. Just try playing something like March Of The Pigs to your average Robbie Williams fan at a high volume and get ready laugh as they shit themselves on the spot. I do agree though that there are defnitely bands out there that are so extreme that mainstream acceptance couldn't possibly have ever been on their minds when they were in the recording studio. I don't think that Trent Reznor is that kind of animal. I think deep down he craves mainstream success. I just don't think there's anything inherently wrong with that.

define pop, i think closer is a great pop tune, really pretty song it is too, i think haed like a hole is a great pop song, they have both as has march of the pigs been played on the radio, march of pigs is no more extreame than bullit with butterfly wings, which was a big radio hit, kids are into m n mwho is about as wierd as reznor, I think your being diplomatic and I guess you have a point, but if you were a punk fan would you be happy with green day saying they are punk, I am very hurt that people often attribute the creation of emo on ian makaye,
I am much happier to say Steve Albini is much more industrail than nin so were even slint,

Oh come on, they were industrial. Maybe they weren't what people considered true industrial acts like Throbbing Gristle, but they were always, and still to this day, grouped with TG and other industrial groups. Nine Inch Nails and Ministry are more of the rock side, but their industrial origins are still there. How come music critics, fans of the genre and fans of both bands always group them in the industrial genre?

Rape man are a rock band as are big black and shelec, but i concider them to be working along much more industrial lines, other great american industrail bands were scratch acid and early jesus lizard,
sorry i'm maybe being a meany, and i'm only really scratching the serfice because I've barely talked about the german origins of the movement as industrail routes came from krautrock bands such as faust and popul vuh and tangerine dream, even works by dada and art brut artists has an effect, even the work of harry parch

Ok, so, would I be contradicting myself if I were to say that NIN is no longer industrial, yet still maintaining that they were industrial? Because Roy, while I still respect your opinion, I will always believe that NIN at least was industrial. But I will say that NIN has left the industrial genre and gone on to more different ones. They are more of a rock act now a days. But I will continue to say that they are the most important band to come out of the industrial movement, because I believe that. I will however, look into the bands that you brought up, because I am constantly looking for different bands to listen to.

industrail lite, thats funny,
well i'd hardly say i like throbbing gristle they are not a very likable band, i am a huge fan and think that very friendly is a master piece, but if you want to go on thinking that skinny puppy are better then fair enough, but to say skinny puppy is better than throbbing gristle to me is like saying eli roth is better than Alejandro Jodorowsky or tarantino is better than Seijun Suzuki, but oh well,

I agree with this statement. Being a pioneer and opening doors for other acts in the genre does not give you carte blanche from criticism. The example I always use is the Sex Pistols and punk. I think they were talentless without any redeeming factor in their music, but along with the Ramones and The Clash they helped make punk mainstream. I'm not an expert by any means, but the Sex Pistols were garbage...off topic I know, I'm just not as knowledgeable in the industrial world.
NIN on the other hand I do enjoy...best live show I've ever seen. I still haven't heard the new track and I do not intend to until the album comes out, but seeing how many of you say it is leaps and bounds better than With Teeth, I am more stoked than ever.

I never sudjested they were its actually a case of heavyfnkmetal juming in on a discusion I was having with the realjohng and misinterprating a response I gave to him in relation to a point he made about nin being the first band to open the doors for industrail music, I have no problem with people crisitising bands, I clearly have invested more time in music than the others here and that includes listening to alot of nin and seeing them live, which was fun though the support band sucked, marolyn someone or other, what ever happened to him, but yeah all I ment was that skinny puppy in my opinion, I stress my opinion are not slighty comparable to throbbing gristle as I belive them to be very poor, on the otherhand ministry who were also mentioned I think were killer sweet and used to love, but anyway poo oants to the lot of yers, I dress like an old man and listen mainly to prog and folk nowadays, but still like bands such as mastadon and lightening bolt, I'm old your not well done, blah blah blah

Trent recently had this to say about the album:
"This record began as an experiment with noise on a laptop in a bus on tour somewhere. That sound led to a daydream about the end of the world. That daydream stuck with me and over time revealed itself to be much more. I believe sometimes you have a choice in what inspiration you choose to follow and other times you really don't. This record is the latter. Once I tuned into it, everything fell into place... as if it were meant to be. With a framework established, the songs were very easy to write. Things started happening in my "real" life that blurred the lines of what was fiction and what wasn't. The record turned out to be more than a just a record in scale, as you will see over time.
Part one is year zero. Concept record. Sixteen tracks. All written and performed by me, produced / programmed by me and Atticus Ross, mixed by Alan Moulder, mastered by Brian "Big Bass" Gardner. Release date: April 17, 2007.
What's it about? Well, it takes place about fifteen years in the future. Things are not good. If you imagine a world where greed and power continue to run their likely course, you'll have an idea of the backdrop. The world has reached the breaking point - politically, spiritually and ecologically. Written from various perspectives of people in this world, "year zero" examines various viewpoints set against an impending moment of truth. How does it sound? You will hear for yourself soon enough, but given the point of this document is to provide information...
This record is much more of a "sound collage" than recent efforts from me.
A lot of it was improvised.
It is very tedious describing your own music.
It's not just music.
It's probably too long, but it felt like the right thing to do to paint the complete picture.
It will sound different after a few listens.
You can think about it and it will reveal more than you were expecting.
You can dance to a lot of it.
You can fuck to a lot of it (maybe all of it depending on what you're into). "

Well here's a rather random little story.
I returned to work yesterday after a couple of weeks holiday and asked if anything interesting had happened whilst I'd been away. So the grimmest story of a lady throwing herself from the multi storey car park begins and ends (nice!) and then my co-worker pipes up "oh and Trent Reznor bought an Apple Mac from the Apple store" (situated just above the store I manage)...I was all like woah, Johng would shit!
Anyhoo, my co-workers boyfriend works for another local Apple store and this has been the talk of Apple stores across the Northwest for all of a week now. Apparantly he was a good guy, chatty...and gave a lot of the kids working there tickets to his show that evening.
Anyway, random story over.

I am SOOOOO fucking tired of hearing people say, "Trent needs to get back on heroin so he can make good music again," and "With Teeth sucked, so Year Zero is gonna suck."
Fuck you, bitches.
Trent Reznor is a musical genius. Yes, With Teeth didn't have the meaning and substance behind it like The Downward Spiral, and yes, it is probably NIN's worst effort, but it's still a good album. How on Earth can you possibly NOT be excited for Year Zero!? Just look at what Trent has done with the whole marketing (http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2007/02/22/year-zero-project-way-cooler-than-lost/) of the album...it's amazing. And at the rate that he is leaking tracks, we'll have the whole fucking thing in no time! ;)
Watching the Beside You In Time DVD only gets me more amped, brings back good memories of when I saw them on their last summer tour.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that from what I've seen and heard of Year Zero so far, it will be an excellent album. Trent's vocals seem MUCH improved, especially on In This Twilight, and the production values are top-notch. Trent has said that he is much more confident with this album than he was with With Teeth, just because he was more experimental and trying to see if he still had it...and based on the Year Zero leaked tracks, the answer is FUCK YES HE DOES!!!

I actually think Trent's vocals have deteriorated since The Fragile era considerably. His yell/scream is nowhere near as powerful as it once was.
I guess I'm the only one who was disappointed with the Beside You In Time DVD. Although it is hard to upstage And All That Could Have Been, but still. That DVD is a letdown.
And calling what Trent is doing for Year Zero, marketing is wrong. He stated that it is not marketing. It's more of exposition.
Only a month and a half til the official release date, but it should be online soon enough. I can't wait to hear the leaked tracks in context with the rest of the record. And that fact that this is part one of two makes me even more excited.

I actually think Trent's vocals have deteriorated since The Fragile era considerably. His yell/scream is nowhere near as powerful as it once was.
Being able to sing is different than yelling/screaming...
And calling what Trent is doing for Year Zero, marketing is wrong. He stated that it is not marketing. It's more of exposition.
Be that as it may, it's still marketing. ;)

The guy can sing somewhat yes, but I miss the old transgressive Trent where he did a lot of screaming.
Fine, it's still marketing.
I saw NIN 4 times on the With Teeth tour and it was the coolest concert, visually, I had ever been to. The stage setup was great and when they brought the curtain down during the middle of the set, that was fucking genius. But this dvd doesn't capture the heart and soul of the concert. It just has the glossed over feeling of the show. AATCHB put you IN the concert. You felt like you were there. Not to mention the audio is out of this world on that DVD. BYIT feels like I'm watching it on tv, which I am. I never saw a show on The Fragility 2.0 tour, but AATCHB takes you there. I've watched that DVD like 10 or 15 times. But I feel like I've actually seen the show in person. BYIT just doesn't do that for me. My two cents.

I'll agree with you that AATCHB "puts you in the concert more than BYIT," and that was definetily the cool thing about that DVD, because it was filmed with hand-camcorders and such...but I am probably leaning more towards it because the only NIN show I've been to was on their summer With Teeth tour. (they didn't have the screen, but the cage/fence thing that rolled down, still fucking cool) Granted, it doesn't put you there as much, but it has a more professional feel to it, and I thought that Rob Sheridan did a great job of directing and editing it.

Rob Sheridan does great work for Trent no doubt, but I think that the fact that it is more professionally done, ruins the experience for me.
And God, I wish I could've seen them on the summer tour when they had the electrical fence thing. The videos I've seen of that are amazing.

This was recently posted on ETS. It's a review of Year Zero:
Just got back from the SLC party, awesome. Here's my review!
Hyperpower: Intro that really outdoes pinion, hard and building, really cool.
Beginning of the end/Survivalism: Yeah, you know.
The Good Soldier: Starts off with a really cool beat, the vocals and lyrics are awesome, dancy, fun to listen to. Single material.
Vessel: Probably one of the coolest tracks on the album, very layered, pretty harsh beat. Great lyrics of what I could understand in one listen.
Me, I'm not: You know.
Capital G: Push the button! Really catchy tune, cool beat, Capital G! Loved it. Might be a disliked song by some, as it is very I don't know "upbeat" sounding for lack of a better word.
My Violent Heart: Ya know
The Warning: Cool song, one of the more average tracks on the album, but still really good. About the presence for sure. "Some say it was a warning" "It came down from the sky"
God Given: Come on sing along now! Cool song, all I can say on first listen. May be too "catchy" for some NIN listeners, but I was into it.
Meet Your Master: One of my favorites, great chorus, hard, a lot of sounds and layers. Probably my favorite vocals on the album and possibly lyrics. It's time to meet your master!
The Greater Good: A decent song between Meet Your Master and Great Destroyer, want to listen to it more for sure. Cool background noises, sort of great below style, and a small piano track.
The Great Destroyer: Starts off sounding a lot like the other songs, lots of bleeps and computer like noises. Builds in the middle to a really epic outburst from trent. Then the ending sounds like a computer freaking out.
Another Version of the Truth: Really saved the album for me, great instrumental, piano track was amazing.
In This Twilight: Ya know!
Zero-Sum: Really loved the sound to this song, the drums were loud in our venue, and most of the vocals I couldnt understand. Only thing I really picked out was "God have mercy" harder than the usual NIN ender but definitely sounded great, I want to hear more! I really got the feeling of more to come with this song, it wasnt the epic absolute closure to NIN albums, but more of an uncertain track. Will it all end, or will the world survive. I really liked it and I'm dying to know all the lyrics.

I don't know if the guy needs to be depressed to release more material like that. Sure would help, but I think he's a talented enough guy to just make music like that.
I don't think we need it stickied. The way we're posting in this, it doesn't need to be.

For God's sake people, this thread is gonna fall off the front page...
Well, I just couldn't let that happen. Today the first official review of Year Zero is out, and MTV has a track-by-track tour through the album, which can be viewed here. (http://www.vh1.com/news/articles/1554530/20070313/nine_inch_nails.jhtml)
Take from it what you will...
"It's probably the most adventurous, experimental and ballsy album released on a major label since Green Day's revelatory American Idiot, which also happens to be its closest kin, in spirit at least. Because for all its growling electronics, squelching guitars and plinking African kalimbas, Year Zero is essentially a punk-rock album, one born of the same bold attitude that drove Green Day to jettison traditional thinking while making Idiot...But that's about as far as those comparisons can go. Because there's no jaunty, nine-minute rock-opera pieces to be found on Zero, nary a ballad on par with "Wake Me Up When September Ends." Shoot, there are barely any discernable guitars. Instead, almost every sound you hear on the album has been chopped, ripped, pulled, flayed, destroyed, flattened, squeezed or smashed beneath the massive, ominous bit-mapping of Reznor and co-producer Atticus Ross. Sixty-four minutes of disorienting, pummeling Sturm und Drang roiling atop a rumbling, certifiably bone-chilling layer of white noise that recalls the wind whipping through a war zone."

I hate all the comparisons to Green Day. I see what they are saying, but goddamn, if MTV didn't suck off GD anymore, they just went and swallowed. After reading that review, plus some fan's reviews from listening parties, I can't even wait anymore. I thought I would be fine, but I officially need a fucking leak. It's killing me. But anyways, yeah, I don't like the comparison to Green Day either, especially when the author says that Year Zero is essentially a "Punk-Rock" album... I fucking hate Punk music. But I get what he's trying to say...that Year Zero and American Idiot's themes are similar and so on and so forth...

Sarcasm is hard to pull off on the internet, buddy. Yeah the YZ and AI comparisons also mean that YZ will do for NIN what AI did for GD. Basically throw them into the top of the mainstream game. Personally, I don't see that happening. But you never know I guess. I don't even know if I want that. NIN is popular, but I don't want little 16 year old Paris Hilton type bitches listening to YZ. If they get the message, fine. But if they just want it because it sounds cool, then fuck them. I like the fact that NIN can go on multiple tours of the U.S., sell out tons of arenas over and over, all while getting no play on MTV or VH1.

Survivalism is a fucking sweet single. I haven't been excited for a NIN album since the Downward Spiral was about to come out. For the first time in over a decade I'm excited about trents upcoming work!

I can understand With Teeth, but you weren't excited for The Fragile?

Not really. Everything I heard from it felt lacking. Like something was missing. Survivalism bypassed that and hit home right away and thats a beautiful thing.

I just listened to a near perfect quality rip of THE BEGINNING OF THE END and I would have to say that it's definately the weakest out of the 5 leaked tracks.
If I were to rank them best to worst I'd hit it like this:
1. Me, I'm Not
2. Survivalism
3. My, Violent Heart
4. In This Twilight
5. The Beginning of the End

TRJ can you put Me,I'm not on Putfile or some other place where I could give it a whirl? I'm just curious as to what makes it numero uno.

Uploading as we speak. It's a slower beat and trent is whispering more than actual singing. The whole song is kinda creepy, but the chorus is just plain creepy. Trent doing his best impersonation of The Fonz. I love it.

Seems to me like you're into the hard/raw NIN a lot more than the softer NIN. I bet you absolutely love Broken...

There is a REALLY sweet "un-official" video for IN THIS TWILIGHT on youtube...Check it! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dcOiKASXyk&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fsymphonyofnoise%2Ecom%2Fnails%2F yearzero%2Finthistwilightfanvid%2Ehtm)

Like 13 years ago I used to wake up every morning and listen to it as I got ready for school. It was a staple of my early music exploring years.

Broken fucking rules.
How would you guys rank the albums along with the EP?
I think it'd go something like this for me:
1. The Downward Spiral
2. The Fragile
3. Broken
4. Pretty Hate Machine
5. With Teeth

I pretty much love everything that NIN has done (Except for Down In It)...I have virtually all of their Halos...and yes, Broken is the shit. When I saw them last summer I was surprised and ecstatic that they played Help Me I Am In Hell. Awesome instrumental song...

Bowieee I have to admit, I'm suprised that you don't like The Fragile, considering it's Reznor's most ambitious and epic album. I thought you would've eaten that up. Oh well.
I love Help Me I Am In Hell, but Pinion is the song that gets me pumped everytime I hear it.
This is how NIN start their shows. Just brilliance.

From what I've read, it's the new Pinion. I haven't heard it, but I'm dying to. I hear it's a mix of Pinion/Burn/Pilgrimage. So it should be interesting. I would love for Trent to keep Pinion as the intro for his shows, but I realize that one must move on in life so hyperpower! being used as an intro doesn't sound like that bad of an idea. What would be great is if he started to play ALL of Year Zero in it's entirety at shows. Sticking with the whole concept idea. I'm actually getting sick of hearing Head Like a Hole, March of the Pigs, Closer, Terrible Lie, Hurt at all the shows. I want songs like Ringfinger, Happiness in Slavery and Memorabilia being played. Memorablia, done right, would kill the crowd at shows.

Hell Yes! I love it when they play their "rarer" songs at shows...(Get Down, Make Love...Deep...Non-Entity) and would love it for them to mix it up more with songs like Metal, Memorabilia, Home, A Violet Fluid, 10 Miles High...

Swap out Ringfinger with The Only Time and I completely agree.

Oh fucking right dude. The Only Time the live version during The Self Destruct Tour is fucking brutal. The only problem is he uses part of the song in the Closer breakdown live. So it might be redundant to do that song after or before Closer.
I'm not a big fan of Home, but I would love to hear A Warm Place segue into Eraser just like on the album. I have no idea why he doesn't do that. Metal, yes, that would rule. I never did get to see them live when they did La Mer/Into the Void.
I've always wanted to see The Downward Spiral complete album straight through, that would be pimp.

Yeah, I like it when some guy throws his lighter at Trent and he gets kinda pissed...I always love Trent when he gets pissed on-stage. That was nothing compared to some of the Closure stuff...
