Hulk Director Answers Fans' Questions!
Source:Advanced Dark February 2, 2007
The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier is answering fans' questions at the Superhero Hype! message boards and has already revealed a few items on the new movie, scheduled for a June 27, 2008 release.
Leterrier said that the role of Bruce Banner, played by Eric Bana in the first film, is close to being filled (Bana is not ruled out yet) and the rest of the cast will follow soon after. "Thunderbolt" Ross is the main villain with Emil Blonsky (aka Abomination) not far behind. The Hulk will be CGI with prosthetics used in certain scenes where needed. The title character will also show feats of strength.
Leterrier added that the film is still on track with no delays. Aaron Sims is working on the Hulk design, which will still be green.
You can submit more questions for Leterrier by going here!

Indeed. I'd even go as far as to say that if you can't get Bana then just call off the entire project.

Me too, but that would neer happen, the reason I agree with you though is because the 1st Hulk looked like, what if Eric Bana turned into the Hulk, you see could see Bana behind the CGI and if they change the look of the hulk then thats just lame, it's only been 3 to 4 years since the 1st not long enough to 'start over'.

Bana and the cast did a good job even though Ang Lee screwed them over with the first film. Still, anyone can play Banner. No worries if they don't land Bana. In fact, distancing themselves COMPLETELY from Ang Lee's mess may be the best thing. The focus will be on updating the look of the Hulk and making him a constant size. The siphoning of the Hulk's power at the end of the last film gives them all kinds of room to play. CGI developments over the part three years will make Hulk a truly kick butt film. The way it should've been in 2003.

I also hope Bana comes back just for continuity sake, and that I think he did a good job in the first one. I do like the direction this new movie is going in too. I'm getting optimistic about it.

For continuity's sake, I'd say let Bana return. But overall, I didn't think Bana was that great and imo, there is more than likely someone more appropriate for the role....
....btw, did I mention that The Hulk was one of the only movies I nearly walked out on. Yeah...it was that horrible.

Rumor floating around that Adrien Brody will replace Bana in the second Hulk movie. You can read about it on Joblo's main page. It's still not confirmed (or unconfirmed for that matter) but I guess Adrien Brody wouldn't be too bad; he's definitely more geeky looking than Bana (which is what I thought was a characteristic of the character). I'm still hoping Bana pulls it out in the end, mostly for continuity sake.

If this is true than this is AWESOME news!! I'm not Norton's biggest fan but he is perfect for this role. I just didn't think that such a big name in Hollywood would be up for a comic book movie that's already trying to relaunch its franchise with its first sequel. If this turns out to be legit, color me 100% thrilled.

Ed Norton is The Hulk?! Wow. That certainly was an unexpected casting decision. As much as I liked Eric Bana as The Hulk, I think Norton is a great choice. Things are starting to look up for this franchise.
Next year, it's Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man, Edward Norton in The Incredible Hulk and, of course, Christian Bale in The Dark Knight.

Edward Norton is The Incredible Hulk!
Source: Variety April 16, 2007
Edward Norton has been set by Marvel Studios to play Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk.
The Louis Leterrier-directed film will be distributed by Universal Pictures on June 13, 2008. The movie will shoot this summer in Toronto.
Norton takes over a role played in the Ang Lee-directed Hulk by Eric Bana. Though that film opened strongly, it didn't fare as well as other Marvel efforts, including Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four and, most recently, Ghost Rider.
Marvel Studios, which has a $525 million credit facility obtained through Merrill Lynch, made The Incredible Hulk its second film under that arrangement, and seeks to make a sequel that is less self-serious and more in line with the comic series and TV show. Leterrier directed the action-filled Transporter and its sequel, as well as Unleashed.
The new movie begins with Banner on the run, trying to avoid capture long enough to cure the condition that turns him into a misunderstood green menace.
"Edward Norton is a rare talent and one of the most versatile actors in the business," Marvel Studios production president Kevin Feige said in a statement. "His ability to transform into a particular role makes him the ideal choice to take on the character of Bruce Banner and the Hulk. Edward is perfectly suited to bring one of the most popular and important Marvel icons to the bigscreen in a new and exciting way."
The script for The Incredible Hulk was written by Zak Penn, who had a hand in crafting two "X-Men" films and Fantastic Four for Marvel.
The movie is being produced by Avi Arad, Gale Anne Hurd and Marvel's Feige. Jim Van Wyck, David Maisel, Ari Arad and Stan Lee are executive producing.

Pretty much. Someone on imdb speculated that his reasons for signing on might be that he is having trouble financing his second directorial outing, Motherless Brooklyn. I'd like to believe that he signed on because he read the script and thought it was pretty damn good, being that Norton seems to be rather wise in choosing his roles. However, given that the script was written by that fucking hack, Zak Penn, the former looks more believable. Either way, I still have high hopes.....

I mean, he's a great actor and all but . . .
Someone has to explain. Is this a direct sequel to the first? If so why are they changing the title (I fucking hate it when they do that) and the lead actor especially considering that Bana did great in the first and wasn't 'ruled out'.
Still. Norton as Banner? Don't quite see it, but he's a flexible actor, he'd probably pull it off right.

I don't know what to believe. On one hand, Ed Norton was pretty vocal about his role in Italian Job being purely because of contract issues and not because he wanted to, so I'm pretty sure he picks his projects delicately.
On the other hand, Ed Norton has to pay the fucking bills. And apparently he's trying to finance a movie.
And then the director of this movie is no Ang Lee.
Conclusion: I hope you enjoy the money, Ed. You've earned it, G.

That's pretty much what I'm going through too.
All I can think of is he needs this money to put something in to Motherless Brooklyn.
And maybe he likes Hulk enough to play that character for a few months. He hasn't really done a studio flick for a few years so maybe it's time to stack the pockets too.
But damnit, it's about time for Motherless Brooklyn so this better be just to get that one done.

04-17-2007, 11:34 AM
I have a feeling this will be a top-notch film. Because Norton makes the movie, every movie actually.
WW Hulk starts in May, it's right around the corner! Right now, the two most anticipated marvel books are Incredible Hulk #106 and Captain America #26. Anyone, and I mean anyone, who thinks the Hulk is "stupid" should pick up Planet Hulk, if you can read that, and not say "Wow" then you just don't like comics.
As for a redo being confusing, get used to it. Comic book fans have seen this for decades, we even invented our own special word for it: Retcon.
Retcon (short for Retroactive Continuity) - a redo, when an old, established storyline is declared out of continuity (ie, no longer cannon) and a new writer establishes a completely different story.
As more and more comic books start to become movies, and start to have sequels and start to change creative teams, you're going to see more and more retconning. Just think, with enough time, you could be watching the next Donna Troy or Hawkman, two characters who have been retconned so often that no body can figure out anything about their histories anymore. I have a master's degree in mathematics, and even I can't figure out Donna Troy's story.

EXCL: Zak Penn on Norton as Hulk!
When it comes to bringing Marvel Comics characters into the movies, you can't get much more knowledgeable than Zak Penn, who's written or been involved with the last two "X-Men" movies, both "Hulk" movies, Elektra and a bunch of the Marvel movie-related video games. In two weeks, Penn's second movie as a director, the poker comedy The Grand, will be premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival, and by pure chance, ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! had a chance to talk to the writer less than 24 hours after the casting announcement that Edward Norton would be starring in the upcoming The Incredible Hulk. Of course, we had to ask him for a few words about the news.
"I couldn't be happier about Ed Norton," he told us. "I worked on the first 'Hulk' movie and I remember talking about how awesome it would be if we got Ed Norton to play this part. He really was up for it the first time. I think Ed Norton's one of the best actors working, and even I was pretty shocked that he wanted to do it. It's one of those rare things where it turned out better than I [expected]. Look, there's a lot of really good actors who wanted to do it even before I wrote my script. I'm not just saying this, but I cannot think of a better person to play Bruce Banner. In this case, Ed Norton would have been at the top of my list.
"To me, the thing about Bruce is that he's a physicist, he's a super-smart guy who has a lot of repressed anger. To me, that is the essential thing you need to know about him. He could be tall or short, but you have to believe that he's a physicist, you have to believe that life is frustrating for him physically. Ed went to Yale. He's a really smart guy. He has an intelligence that you can see on-screen, which a lot of people who are great actors don't project that. He projects the guy that is smarter than you, and he also projects anger in a lot of his movies, 'Fight Club' being the most obvious example. If you think about 'Fight Club,' he has a lot of similarities to the Hulk as a character. Tyler Durden is his Hulk."

I don't know if this helps explain Norton's decision to do this. But I gleaned from a short interview in this month's Total Film Magazine that the guy is a bit of a fan of comic books (he mentions that he loved Batman Begins because it was truer to the spirit of the Batman books that he loves...ie Year One and The Dark Knight Returns). So maybe he's been jonesing for this very opportunity to come his way. And maybe he's a fan of the not so jolly green giant. Whatever...my interest in this movie just went through the roof. As for some schmoes having a problem with the whole "redo" thing. Well the comic book itself has been through countless incarnations with different creative teams bringing their own visions of what a Hulk comic should be. Just in the last five years the book has gone through several shifts in tone. So why shouldn't this mindset be applied to a movie? I enjoyed Ang Lee's Hulk (ignoring the last ten minutes and the Hulk poodles). But I think this could be a healthy way to go about things. I would only have been interested in seeing a direct sequel to The Hulk had Ang Lee returned accompanied by the same cast. Without those two factors in place...fuck it. Let someone else have a go. And don't leave them hamstrung by having to adhere to someone else's vision.

Oh no not grey hulk aka "Joe Fixit"! I know that the Hulk when the comic first started was grey but they had to switch to green because it showed up better in the comics. I hope they keep him green and still based off of the Savage Hulk. The grey Hulk sucked and he looked funny compared to the other Hulk versions. With Abomination in the movie they should have the strongest version in it
