OK which do you prefer while watching Foreign films?
A while back i hated watching a film with subtitles, if it didn't have the film in english that a film thats in french or japanease i never got it. I hated it. against it. lol. sorry no disrespeact.
Now i prefer subtitles. I always choose original language and english subtitles. its much better than dubbed. its horrible dubbednow that i see it.
i just watched WASABI,AUDITION,ONG BAK, AND DISTRCIT B 13. Now im so used to it.
Im asking this because i am getting infernal affiars and taxi trilogy which is all original language. So i got myself prepared for what i was getting into. Now i can enjoy movies i wanted to see but ignored with ease.

If there is a dubbed function available then dubbed it is.
I can walk away from the screen and still can hear whats goin on. But if its strictly subtitled then subtitled it is.
IF you take your eyes off I may get thrown off on what just happened like HIGH DRAMA, Characters SCREAMING AT EACH OTHER or someone just broke down and cried.

for me its no problem.
I have the volume on high, i can still hear film whileI read and i see whats going on in every frame.
I didn't miss anything.
For some people its different.
Even if the film is dubbed in english like wasabi or ong bak i just chose original language and english subtitles. I just prefer it.
not judgeing you in anyway though.

with anime, if the dub isn't bad and is the same or very similar to the subtitles i'll watch the dub
with live action films it's always subtitles, aside from really bad cheesy old martial arts films i cannot watch a film dubbed...its too painful

YES I agree if its anime 90% its always dubbed because its cartoon. its not live action. Its voice over work.
So i can watch it dubbed no problem. (when it comes to anime.)

I really can't understand how anyone prefers dubbed. Subtitled all the way, it takes away from the movie watching the film dubbed. I've tried doing it before it on movies that don't offer the original language track with subtitles, and i just can't do it. I even tried doing with Oldboy (since it defaults to it) couldn't take it for more than five minutes.
So obviously, i'd say subtitled is the best way to go

Definitely subtitles.. Dubbed is way too awkward.. Ever watch Kung fu hustle dubbed? the jokes fall way too short

I always found it far more distracting watching a film with the dubbed audio with the unmatched voice-to-lips problem. It used to seem like a hassle to 'read' while watching a movie, but usually after a few minutes I don't even realize I'm reading subtitles anymore. Plus, with the original language you get the full performance of the actors.
I tried watching Oldboy with a friend with the dubbed track after having already watched it myself with the original audio and it made a huge difference. I told him he was missing out and he agreed to try the subtitles, he said it was like watching a different movie, a much better one.
I'm just thankful we get to have the choice to choose how we want to watch/listen to our movies now, I remember having to watch my old Jackie Chan films on VHS and dubbed was all I could get.

Subtitled - all the way. Dubbed movies freakin' suck; I don't watch Godzilla movies or Anime so I can't comment on that, but I hate watching foreign flicks that are dubbed. If you do it enough, you can get pretty good at reading the subtitles and watching the movie at the same time. I consider it an artform myself :D.

I always go subtitles but if it's an old kung-fu classic, dubbed just makes it hilarious. :D

When I went to see "Pans Labyrinth" with my friend, a lot of people in the audience didn't realize that the movie was in fact in Spanish with English subtitles and it pissed a lot of them off. I don't see why but I guess some people feel distracted by subtitles.

i gave my cousin and friend audition a japenease horror film, didn't tell them its in a forign langauge. They called me and said "what movie is this"? "Can i watch it dubbed"?
I told them "no". just watch it with subtitles its way better. thats how i watch my movies now. They never watched it and gave it back.

Yeah, it depends on your tolerance for sure and how quickly you can read a line without being distracted from the screen.

Subtitled. There's no other way to go for me. It's like the FS and WS thing. If you watch a film in WS and with Subtitles that's the way the Director intended for you to see it. If you watch a film in FS and or is Dubbed, your not watching the same film IMHO. Your not seeing and or experiencing the film the Director wanted you to.

Unfortunately, there exist those that don't see it that way.

well many feel strongly that subtitles like WS is the way it was ment to be seen. I tend to use Subtitles unless I'm being lazy. Some movies are dubbed well (like Crouching Tiger) Sometimes I'll watch the dub version the first time. Then after seeing it once dubed, I'll always watch the subtiled version, and it'll be easier to follow. Anime can't see watching subtitled myself. But If my DVD only had one choice I'd prefer the subtitled version.

Same thing happened a few years ago when I saw Brotherhood of the Wolf. It was a big crowd and there was a lot of uneasy shifting once they realised they would have to read. There were some high school kids down the row from me who got really bored because I think they gave up.
It depends on how I see the movie the first time. When I first saw The Killer and Hard Boiled, they were on Cinemax and dubbed. Now that's the only way I can watch them because that's how I remember it. It makes the dialogue even more absurd, but hey, whatever. "Micky Mouse/Dumbo!" would be just as dumb in subtitles.
Other movies like Run Lola Run I saw in theaters subtitled, so I have to watch it that way. If anything because the actress dubbing Franka Portente can't match her scream at all.
Now, the one esception is the aformentioned Brotherhood of the Wolf. I saw it subtitled at first, but watched the DVD dubbed and found it much easier to follow (it's a pretty complicated plot with TONS of dialogue). The one drawback was the voice actor who did Manny the Native America gave him this truly horrible "How. Me want wahmpum" stereotyped voice.

If it's available, I'll always go with subtitles. I don't mind the little distraction caused and I get to view the film the way the makers intended.

Subtitles all the way.
My friend refuses to watch Battle Royale cause of subtitles. That's cause he's a lazy jackass who doesn't act like he can read, like a lot of people with issues with subtitles.
No contest, subtitles all the way.
I get more distracted when I know it’s dubbed, can’t help it. There is something wrong when a Chinese guy speaks English in a Chinese movie, I keep staring at the mouth to look for mistakes…
Three four weeks ago I had the great pleasure to finally see El Laberinto del Fauno in the theater, and after 5-10 minutes a couple of people walk out on the flick just because they spoke Spanish, I really feel sorry for those kind of people…

Yeah...when I went to watch Pan's Labyrinth about two months back...I completely expected to see a number of people get up and leave once they realized the movie was subtitled, but I guess I underestimated the people that were there that day at least. Granted I fluently speak spanish and didn't need subtitles either way for that film, but yeah, subtitles is always the way to go.

I prefer subtitles to dubbing. I like to hear the actual language its spoken in, not to mention it matches the mouth movements better than dubbing. Sometimes dubbing can be disorienting and distracts from whats happening.

When it comes to live action , i prefer to see a film in it's native language with subs , but for some reason when it comes to anime or cartoons , i prefer the dubbing , it just seems to fit better and make it more enjoyable . One example is Cowboy beebop the movie , i tried to watch it in japanese , but it was just distracting , but with the English dubbing , it really shone .
