"When you decide to be something, you can be it. That's what they don't tell you in the church. When I was your age they would say we can become cops, or criminals. Today, what I'm saying to you is this: when you're facing a loaded gun, what's the difference?" (The Departed)

“Enough is enough! I've had it with these muthaf*ckin' snakes on this muthaf*ckin' plane!" (Snakes on a Plane)

“People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.” (V for Vendetta)

"Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.” (V for Vendetta)

My vote with some thoughts:

Fav movie of the year:
V for Vendetta and nothing is even close. It's the only great movie on the list. Those other four movies are good but not great.

Worst Movie of the Year:
Date Movie. It's a shame that the year's REAL stinkers like Nacho Libre and Ultraviolet and The Marine and The Libertine aren't nominated. I'm also quite surprised to see Bloodrayne not nominated. Not having seen that one myself I have no idea if it was deserving of being nominated for worst film. But Date Movie is easily the worst of this lot. The Da Vinci Code is a close second. I liked Lady in the Water and yes, The Wicker Man as well. Little Man wasn't good but it actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Best Director:
Martin Scorsese. It's a close race between Scorsese and Cuaron but ultimately I have to go with Marty.

Best Screenplay:
The Prestige. I haven't seen Brick though.

Most Overrated:
Dreamgirls. Everyone hated The Da Vinci Code so I don't understand how it can be in this category. Superman Returns is not only not overrated but I think it's very underrated as well. It did not recieve the glowing reviews from fans it deserved. Superman Returns is one of the very few movies of 2006 to actually delivered exactly what it promised.

Most Underrated:
Crank. I loved it. Great fun from start to finish. Lucky Number Slevin is a close second though. Another great movie.

Trippiest:
Crank with Pan's Labyrinth in a close second. I haven't seen A Scanner Darkly though.

Best Comedy of the Year:
Little Miss Sunshine

Best Horror Movie of the Year:
The Hills Have Eyes

Best Animated Movie of the Year:
Cars

Best Sci-fil movie:
V for Vendetta

Best Special Effects of the Year:
Pan's Labyrinth

Biggest Disappointment of the Year:
Miami Vice

Biggest Surprise of the Year:
Little Miss Sunshine, I guess.

Best Actor:
Clive Owen

Best Actress:
Natalie Portman

Best Supporting Actor:
Alan Arkin

Best Supporting Actress:
Emily Blunt

Breakthrough Performance:
Daniel Craig

Favorite Celebrity of the Year:
Scarlett Johansson

Coolest Character of the Year:
Frank Castello

Best Music in a Movie:
Marie Antoinette

Favorite Movie Poster of the Year:
Superman Returns

Best Trailer of the Year (2006 releases):
The Fountain

Best DVD of the Year:
n/a

Best Action Sequence of the Year:
Construction site area chase

Most Memorable Scene in a Movie:
Destruction of Parliament (V for Vendetta)

Best T&A of the Year:
Kate Winslet (Little Children)

Best Line of the Year:
“Enough is enough! I've had it with these muthaf*ckin' snakes on this muthaf*ckin' plane!" (Snakes on a Plane)

Overall pretty meh to me. Okay nominees but nothing special.

Go Children of Men. It's going to be a battle between that and The Departed me thinks.

Really? That many people hated THE DA VINCI CODE? Ooookaaay...

Nice, varied mix of nominations. I'm digging the nods for UNITED 93 and THE FOUNTAIN, and if anything, I'm glad PICK OF DESTINY got a nomination for at least Best Music. You just can't deny the brilliance of "Beelzeboss." :D

I think that the nominations are really great this year.

I think this year's choices are the best they've been since the Golden Schmoes started, at least for me. I mean, yeah my picks would be pretty different but the ones that were picked were generally worthy, interesting choices.

In bold are my choices...

ETA: HAVING NOW SEEN CASINO ROYALE, JUST UPDATING PICKS...and no I haven't actually voted yet, I'm waiting till the last day to vote just in case I do end up catching any of the other movies I missed here.

1) Favorite Movie of the Year:
Casino Royale
Children of Men
The Departed
Little Miss Sunshine
V for Vendetta

The Departed and V for Vendetta are both excellent films. I liked Little Miss Sunshine but I think it was the weakest of these nominees and I still think it overrated this year. Casino Royale was also not as great as I was hoping though entertaining and one of the best Bond in a while still...great first half, somewhat weak second half.

2) Worst Movie of the Year:
The Da Vinci Code
Date Movie
Lady in the Water
Little Man
The Wicker Man

Haven't seen Little Man or The Wicker Man. As much as I disliked The Da Vinci Code and Lady in the Water, they were nowhere near the abomination that Date Movie bestowed upon audiences.

3) Best Director of the Year:
Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men)
Paul Greengrass (United 93)
Christopher Nolan (The Prestige)
Martin Scorsese (The Departed)
Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth)

Really such a great crop of nominees that it's hard to choose. All are on my top 10 excluding The Prestige (which is in my top 20 this year). Children of Men is just pure greatness and Scorsese's work on The Departed is great. Pan's Labyrinth and The Prestige are probably slightly weaker than the others here for me...but I gotta give this one to Paul Greengrass for United 93. I love Children of Men more but the editing and directing on this film was phenomenal. And there's no editing award either so..

4) Best Screenplay of the Year:
Brick
Children of Men
The Departed
Little Miss Sunshine
The Prestige

Continuing the trend of sharing the wealth, :p this one goes to The Departed for me. But quite honestly, it is because I really do think Monahan's script is fantastic and improves the richness of the characterization from the original Infernal Affairs. After that I would've picked Children of Men or Brick.

5) Most Overrated Movie of the Year:
Borat
The Da Vinci Code
Dreamgirls
Pirates of Caribbean 2
Superman Returns

It was between Da Vinci and Dreamgirls for me on this one. But Dreamgirls has been far better received I think than Da Vinci so...

6) Most Underrated Movie of the Year:
Brick
Crank
The Fountain
Lucky Number Slevin
Running Scared

This one's hard. Two of these I'm not a big fan of (Lucky Number Slevin, The Fountain). I really dug Brick but I dunno if it's underrated, maybe more underseen. And Crank is generally known for exactly what it is - an entertaining blast that delivers fun. So I gotta go with Running Scared here I think. Did poorly in theatres and I don't think it did too well critically and I don't hear that much about it.

7) Trippiest Movie of the Year:
Crank
The Fountain
Pan's Labyrinth
The Prestige
A Scanner Darkly

Crank? Really? That and The Prestige are probably out first for me on this one. Pan's Labyrinth has some trippy stuff in it but this one's between The Fountain and A Scanner Darkly for me. Tough one but I think A Scanner Darkly wins out on trippiness.

8) Best Comedy of the Year:
Borat
Clerks 2
Little Miss Sunshine
Talladega Nights
Thank You for Smoking

Haven't seen Clerks 2. Thought LMS was overrated, wasn't a huge fan of Talladega Nights. Thank You for Smoking would've been my next choice, but this one was easy.

9) Best Horror Movie of the Year:
The Descent
The Hills Have Eyes
Hostel
Saw 3
Slither

Easy. Hostel and Saw 3 were pretty damn bad. Slither was enjoyable in a light way, and Hills Have Eyes was above average, but The Descent is the first horror film in a long while that I've genuinely loved, and it's in my top 10 this year.

10) Best Animated Movie of the Year:
Cars
Happy Feet
Monster House
Over the Hedge
A Scanner Darkly

This crop is okay. Cars was a little weak. Over the Hedge was fun. Monster House had a haunted house with a lot of character. Happy Feet could've been quite good if it weren't for some major flaws and some of the moments in it were the best of this crop. But I think I gotta go with the trippy one here.

11) Best Sci-Fi Movie of the Year:
Children of Men
The Fountain
The Prestige
A Scanner Darkly
V for Vendetta

After Children it'd be V, then The Prestige, then A Scanner Darkly for me. And last would be The Fountain. All this love makes me curious if I might enjoy it more the second time. But I doubt it, even as much as I wanted to love that film.

12) Best Special Effects of the Year:
The Fountain
Pan's Labyrinth
Pirates of the Caribbean 2
Superman Returns
X-Men 3

Nice to see The Fountain made the list - it really deserves the recognition for this one I think. X-Men 3 and Superman Returns had more standard SFX. It's between Pan's and Pirates 2 for me on this one though and it's a tough call. I'll go with Pirates 2 cause it was on a much larger scale and it did have some really wicked effects.

13) Biggest Disappointment of the Year:
The Da Vinci Code
Lady in the Water
Miami Vice
Superman Returns
X-Men 3

Haven't seen Miami Vice. The book for Da Vinci Code wasn't very good anyway so it wasn't a disappointment that the movie sucked. After The Village, I didn't have much anticipation for Lady in the Water either so can't go to that. I enjoyed Superman though it had its problems, so that only leaves X-Men 3 which had good action sequences and a shitty script.

14) Biggest Surprise of the Year:
Casino Royale
Children of Men
The Descent
Little Miss Sunshine
Rocky Balboa

Haven't seen Rocky Balboa. This one's easy though. I expected Children of Men to be good and it was. Little Miss Sunshine and Casino Royale both were slightly disappointing rather than good surprises.

15) Best Actor of the Year:
Sasha Baron Cohen (Borat)
Leonardo DiCaprio (The Departed)
Aaron Eckhart (Thank You for Smoking)
Hugh Jackman (The Fountain)
Clive Owen (Children of Men)

Great set though I'm not sure if I'd put Owen here - I got several I'd put in front of him (Forest Whitaker!!!!!!!!!) But no matter. Jackman was phenomenal, Cohen created a memorable character, Eckhart really got the smoothtalker downpat and DiCaprio really nailed his part on The Departed, even more so than in Blood Diamond.

16) Best Actress of the Year:
Helen Mirren (The Queen)
Ellen Page (Hard Candy)
Natalie Portman (V for Vendetta)
Rachel Weisz (The Fountain)
Kate Winslet (Little Children)

See, even though I'm not a fan of The Fountain, I still thought both leads were fantastic. This one's tough too though. Mirren has a really worthy turn as the queen but it's not one that I root for as much. Page was very good in Hard Candy but I think a nomination is enough for her. Portman was solid but wouldn't be on my list. But I love Little Children. And I love Winslet. So...

17) Best Supporting Actor of the Year:
Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine)
Michael Caine (Children of Men)
Steve Carell (Little Miss Sunshine)
Jack Nicholson (The Departed)
Mark Wahlberg (The Departed)

I thought Arkin was vastly overrated in LMS. Steve Carell's an okay choice. Nicholson was hamming it up too much. This is between Caine and Wahlberg for me.

18) Best Supporting Actress of the Year:
Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine)
Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada)
Vera Farmiga (The Departed)
Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls)
Rinko Kikuchi (Babel)

Breslin was good but I feel like a lot of it might come from her cuteness rather than the performance. Hudson is a tad overrated but worthy of the nom. I still don't understsand how Blunt keeps showing up - her performance was not that memorable. Farmiga was good and subtle but it wasn't a powerhouse performance. Only one here stands out head and shoulders above the rest for me...

19) Breakthrough Performance of the Year:
Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine)
Sasha Baron Cohen (Borat)
Daniel Craig (Casino Royale)
Ellen Page (Hard Candy)
Brandon Routh (Superman Returns)

This one's tough though. I figure, Cohen's done this character before on his show, as brilliant as he is. It was between Breslin and Page for me here and it WAS a toughie but now having seen Casino Royale, it was an easy choice for breakthrough despite the movie only being "pretty good".

20) Favorite Celebrity of the Year:
Sasha Baron Cohen
Daniel Craig
Leonardo DiCaprio
Hugh Jackman
Scarlett Johansson

My second choice would be DiCaprio.

21) Coolest Character of the Year:
James Bond (Casino Royale)
Frank Costello (The Departed)
Jack Sparrow (Pirates 2)
Nick Naylor (Thank You for Smoking)
V (V for Vendetta)

Jack Sparrow's weak...the character was good in Pirates 1 but kinda sucked in Pirates 2 even though I enjoyed the film. Costello's alright. Just the usual Nicholson schtick. Between Nick Naylor, Bond and V for me. V's neat and all, the smooth-talking Naylor nearly takes it, but this year I gotta go with the Bond.

22) Best Music in a Movie:
The Departed
The Fountain
Marie Antoinette
Little Miss Sunshine
Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny

Haven't seen Tenacious D. Bah, people don't really listen to scores do they? Ah well...The Departed has decent music - if this category was only for non-score music. Since this is for both, that choice kinda sucks as a nomination. LMS has a pretty good indie soundtrack. The real battle though is between The Fountain which has a fairly gorgeous score by Clint Mansell and performed by Mogwai and the near perfect soundtrack from Marie-Antoinette. (Though really, this should've been between some of the fantastic scores this year from The Painted Veil or The Queen or Pan's Labyrinth or Perfume or The Good German or The Black Dahlia...need I keep going?)

23) Favorite Movie Poster of the Year:
The Fountain
Hard Candy
Pan's Labyrinth
Superman Returns
V for Vendetta

Second would've been V.

24) Best Trailer of the Year (2006 releases):
Casino Royale
Children of Men
The Fountain
Little Children
The Prestige

All great trailers. Little Children is head and shoulders above though for its uniqueness. The Fountain would be second for me and then The Prestige.

25) Best DVD of the Year:
Clerks 2 (Special Edition)
Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut)
King Kong (Deluxe Edition)
Oldboy (3-Disc Edition)
Superman Ultimate Collection

Haven't seen or used the dvds for Clerks 2, Superman, or the King Kong Deluxe edition. So there's only Kingdom and Oldboy 3-disc left. I dig my Oldboy 3-disc and all but I think the Kingdom of Heaven 4-disc is classier and edges it out for me with more informative features.

26) Best Action Sequence of the Year:
Construction area chase (Casino Royale)
One-take rescue baby (Children of Men)
Bridge sequence (Mission Impossible 3)
3-way swordfight (Pirates 2)
Airplane rescue (Superman Returns)

Construction chase was pretty damn good despite how sort of stupid the guy had to be to climb up there to get away. 3-way swordfight was uber cool. Bridge sequence was decent. Airplane rescue was okay. The Children of Men scene though was just stunning.

27) Most Memorable Scene in a Movie:
Naked hotel fight (Borat))
One-take rescue baby (Children of Men)
Elevator scene (The Departed)
Passengers fight back (United 93)
Destruction of Parliament (V for Vendetta)

Really really tough one. Elevator scene is the least memorable for me as I'd seen Infernal Affairs. The one-take was powerful as was the very moving scene with the passengers fighting back in United 93. The destruction of Parliament with all the V masks was awe-inspiring. But nothing sticks out more in my mind this year than the naked hotel fight from Borat.

28) Best T&A of the Year:
Kate Beckinsale (Underworld: Evolution)
Rosario Dawson (Clerks 2)
Eva Green (Casino Royale)
Scarlett Johansson (The Prestige)
Kate Winslet (Little Children)

Haven't seen Clerks 2 or Casino Royale. Johansson doesn't show all that much in Prestige. Beckinsale doesn't show much either in Underworld 2. Winslet was my choice before but having seen Eva Green in Casino Royale...

29) Best Line of the Year:
"I'm gonna have a smoke right now. You want a smoke? You don't smoke, do ya, right? What are you, one of those fitness freaks, huh? Go f*ck yourself." (The Departed)

I'm pretty indifferent to this but just to pick, I chose Snakes.

What? The Da Vinci Code was overrated? By who? Pretty much everyone thought it was bad.

Besides that, pretty much what I expected. I thought Pan's Labyrinth would get in for Best Movie though, but oh well. I'm just glad Babel didn't get nominated for Most Overrated, since I realize it has as many people who hate it as people who love it (which I do).

My guess is that Children of Men gets Best Movie while Scorsese gets Best Director. Or maybe the other way around. It'll be really close between these two though.

Yeah, The Da Vinci Code nomination really confuses me.

Well, all I can say is go Fountain, go Departed, go Children, and go...Ellen Page!

I just looked over the nominations on Joblo's main page and I gotta say I'm very pleased at a lot of them. I'm glad Casino Royale made it to the Best Pic noms; it'll get my vote though I know it probably won't win (but who knows? Batman Begins won last year in an upset ;)). I do wish Daniel Craig got a Best Actor nod since I think he's the main reason the movie kicked ass so much, but he got a Best Celebrity nod so that'll be good enough.

And I'm suprised Borat got a Most Overrated nod; I thought people loved the hell out of it, but I guess I was wrong. It's still my pick to win Best Comedy; it won't get my vote, but I think most schmoes will vote for it.

I am very much looking forward to voting. Can't wait.

Good luck to everyone voting :D :D :D :D!!!

Not really. It was one of the highest grossing movies of 2006, so clearly some people liked it. Including me. I don't know what all the hate is about.

Hmm...a movie that portrays Opus Dei members as a bunch of insane, masochistic fucks and suggests that Jesus Christ had a child with a known prostitute....you're right, I don't see how anyone could dislike that.

Wow, is anyone else as pleased with the results as I am? I was worried that one of the Best Picture nominees would be one of the Most Overrated nominees, thus contradicting the entire thing.

I know I sound like a noob asking this, but are non-schmoes allowed to vote?

I always thought that you had to be registered on the site to do this, but that just might be for the nominations. I'm not sure about the actual awards.

I actually think (at least for the people that saw it) the hate was more for just how much of a complete bore it was. And maybe Tom Hanks's hair.

As for the rest of the nods-pretty solid IMO. Although I am a little surprised and disappointed with the Borat nod for "Most Overrated". I just don't get you schmoes sometimes.

I think Children of Men is gonna take it. Which is awesome. While Departed was my favorite film of the year, if the category had been best film of the year, as in better made, I would have voted Children. If that makes any sense.

I'm glad it's Favorite film of the year instead of Best film of the year. While there is little difference, there is still a difference. It makes it sound more like enjoyment than technical merit or something else.

Just voted - woo woo

Most of the choices were pretty easy, and am pretty confident with what I voted for.

The only real pain in the ass was choosing between Alfonso and Marty. :(

Yeah, that's what I meant, thank you. Less about the technical and more about personal preference. I'm Irish, I love gangster flicks, I love Scorsese, and I love the Jack. So why Cuaron's film was, for the most part, a mastery of the directorial art, I still had more fun with Departed.
