Anyone here remember when bands like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, The Brian Setzer Orchestra and Cherry Poppin' Daddies hit it big when for some reason in like 97 or 98 people were listening to swing again? I myself loved it because I had never heard any swing before, and I got into it right after I heard Setzer's verson of Jump Jive and Wail and Cherry Poppin' Daddies Zoot Suit Riot. Looking back, it kind of stuck me as odd that MTV played both those videos in heavy rotation especially during late 90's. I still listen to those albums, and not just the popular ones. Cherry Poppin' Daddies have some awesome ska/punk stuff, and Setzer's old rockabilly band Stray Cats just rule.

Yes, I remember actually getting caught up in that fad as well as ska (Save Ferris,Reel Big Fish) to a lesser degree in the 2nd half of my high school years. Say what you will, but I'd rather have some ska/swing bands that play music than Justin,Beoynce, and Fergie polluting the charts. That swing/ska fad kind of reminded me of some of those new wave/new romantic (ABC,Thompson Twins,Duran Duran, etc.) bands that were fun to listen to but didn't hurt the ears compared to most of the shitty pop music out there today.

I thought it was very funny how for about a year the big band sound got popular.
I hated Cherry Poppin Daddies.
However, I've been a fan of Setzer since I was a baby, and the Brian Setzer Orchestra had been rocking my ass several years earlier from his first album.
I'm not trying to say I liked it before it was popular. I fell in love with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy after watching SWINGERS.
I seriously believe SWINGERS helped move the fad forward, for after a couple years its' popularity formed enough of a movement to make the big band sound popular, however short lived it was.

Properbly the last "horrah" for the 90's wave of alternative music becoming listenable for mainstream audiences. Too bad they had to invent watered-down generic alternative rock which sounds so safe you're falling asleep to it.

I agree. I think 98 was the last year MTV had some tolerable prgramming where you would even see a classic older music video once in awhile. Once Carson Daly allowed the boy groups and the Limp Bizkit clones take over was when the shit truly hit the fan...and it's not only gotten worse but I feel that even 9 years later it's only just began as much as I don't want to be pessimistic.

there are still a lot of people that enjoy this type of music, but it's not as "mainstream" as it was in the 90's
