I searched and I don't think there are any forum topics for the upcoming film based on the PC game American McGee's Alice...I dunno how many people here will even know the game though, and therefore care about this film...I thought I'd make a thread about it anyway, to discuss it with anyone interested.

It's set for a 2007-2008 release, with Marcus Nispel (Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake) directing, and Sarah Michelle Gellar playing Alice. Personally I think that's really crap...

I think Guillermo del Toro should direct (after seeing the amazing creativity and creepiness of the fantasy in Pan's Labyrinth). He's got a lot on his plate right now though, and I can't think of anyone else who'd suit it...some people say Tim Burton, but I think his films are generally too family-friendly compared to how this should be.

I think, while Alice is meant to be 17 in this story, Dakota Fanning would be a brilliant choice...if you've seen Hide & Seek, you'll see how disturbed she can act, as Alice is meant to be, and in that film, her character even looks a little like Alice...Failing that, Emily Browning could be quite good, as she looks quite like Alice in Lemony Snicket, and is about the appropriate age.

I reckon the music for the film should be done by Chris Vrenna, as the game's music was, as given a larger budget he could do something amazing, and just as creepy, on film scale.

While I don't like the choices of director and leading actress...I found a piece of artwork for the film on the American McGee forums a while back, and it did look damn good (I'll try and get a link to it later).

What do you guys think about all of this, who should be chosen to do what, and how it should be adapted from the game?

I remember hearing about this on and off since the game was first released. I do remember the game and how nice and twisted it was. The whole concept behind it could make for an excellent movie. Are they actually going through with making it now?

I have to agree with you about the director. I don't know if the guy who remade the Texas Chainsaw Massacre will have the same vison for the movie that the game had. Guillermo del Toro would be perfect. I think Sarah Michelle Gellar is a pretty good choice for Alice though.

Yeah, Nispel may try and turn it into a horror slasher (like the TCM remake), when really, it should just be a dark, fantasy / adventure, with the horror elements just to make the imagery more disturbing, like Pan's Labyrinth.

The movie's seemingly still going forwards...apparently it's in pre-production, and I forgot to mention, the script is being written by "the Hoeber Brothers"...who so far have only written a movie called "Montana", which I've never heard of...

Filming was meant to start January 2007, but it doesn't appear to have.

I read somewhere that a script was apparently finished in February of last year, but I can't remember where I read that.

Here's the cool artwork I found, which is apparently real artwork for the movie:

My only concern about this movie's release is that Marilyn Manson's "Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll" is coming out this summer, another "twisted Wonderland" story, focusing on the author, however, not the Alice story. While I think that's fine (Alice being about Alice, Phantasmagoria being about Lewis Carroll), they may not want to release two "twisted Wonderland" movies around the same time.
