This is something different. James Caviezel in a sci-fi viking movie?
Plot Outline: During the reign of the Vikings, Kainan (Caviezel), a man from a far-off world, crash-lands on Earths, bringing with him an alien predator known as the Moorwen. Though both man and monster are seeking seek revenge for violence committed against them, Kainan leads the alliance to kill the Moorwen by fusing his advanced technology with the Viking's Iron Age weaponry.
Sounds both weird and stuff.

Very cool and interesting premise. Don't hear much about aliens meeting up with history (as opposed to the present). And Jim Caviezel is cool in my book, Ron Perlman too.

Sounds ridiculous . . . I totally love it.
Also “This is the first film in history to feature old Norse, an almost dead language. Howard McCain used an Icelandic professor to help translate the dialogue and to teach the actors how to speak the ancient language.” So does this mean the whole film will be subtitled?

Well that kind of shoots down the B-movie factor. At worst it will be a completely original, unique production, even if the budgets not huge.

BTW, its a modern retelling of Beowulf, or modern based explanation, or whatever the fuck you want to call it. Magic = Alien Technology.

Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesy!
Give me a break. The only decent viking movie I've seen is The 13th Warrior, which had good source material, Eaters Of The Dead, which was in turn based on Beowulf.

This is finally getting a limited theatrical release this week, but there's not going to be a showing anywhere near my location. It's a shame that The Weinstein Company is just throwing this movie in the garbage. I bet it could make a decent amount of money if it had a wide release. The concept of the movie is cool and it's got some recognizable actors.
Ron Perlman and John Hurt are in it, so I'm interested in seeing it solely because of their involvement. The trailers look good. It had a 50 million dollar budget, so the special effects can't be too bad.
Caviezel describes it as Braveheart meets Highlander, but on a bigger scale.
Here's the newest trailer: Link. (http://www.firstshowing.net/2009/01/17/must-watch-awesome-trailer-for-viking-sci-fi-film-outlander/)

Anyone else think the alien in here looks like it came from The Relic?
I've been looking forward to this for awhile. It's sad that it's getting dumped. Although it does have a Sci-Fi channel vibe, it looks like cool, stupid fun. It's got some of my favorite actors-- John Hurt, Ron Pearlman, and the highly underrated Jim Caviezel-- and Vikings, and aliens. I'll definitely hit this up on DVD, but would have loved to have seen it in theaters. L

Yes, I do. I captured a few shots for a closer look. Very similar, especially in the way it moves at times.

Ah, an "Equilibrium Special."
The Weinsteins are known for this. They probably made back all the money it cost to make by selling off the foreign rights to the point where the movie turned a profit before it was ever released. Then fearing a money maker would become a money loser, they opt to skip a wide release (read: expensive), and only chuck it out in a few screens before its DVD release.

What the fuck is up with the Weintseins? Really. This looks so much better than 10,000bc, which got a wide release internationaly, and yet this doesn't? Can anyone even explain this?

Word from a couple of circles is that it's being dumped because it's bad. The concept was original enough and interesting but the execution misses the mark by a wide margin. Reminds me of The Mutant Chronicles, which I was unfortunate enough to look forward to and come upon and be disappointed by.

I've just seen it. It's an entertaining flick. It draws elements from many other movies: "The 13th Viking", the "Alien" movies, "Predator", "Brotherhood Of The Wolf", "Pitch Black", "Lord Of The Rings" (there's one character named Boromir, hehehe), even "The Matrix" to name a few. If you're a fan of these films, you will probably enjoy it.
7.5/10.

I actually found this film to be really entertaining. The effects were much better than they appear to be in previews, and come on people who doesn't enjoy watching scrawny ass vikings trying to kill the brotherhood of the wolf werewolf crossbreeded with michael rooker from slither??
seriously though, it was good.
