Chris Cornell quits Audioslave amid conflicts By Dean Goodman
Thu Feb 15, 5:03 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Audioslave singer Chris Cornell has quit the short-lived "supergroup," citing "irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences," he said on Thursday.
Cornell, 42, who rose to fame with defunct Seattle rock group Soundgarden, will reignite his solo career with the May 1 release of "Carry On," his second solo album.

"Due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences, I am permanently leaving the band Audioslave. I wish the other three members nothing but the best in all of their future endeavors," the part-time Paris restaurateur said in a statement.

The Audioslave split was not unexpected. His colleagues, guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk, have reunited with singer Zack de la Rocha to resurrect their former band Rage Against the Machine, which will play its first show in seven years at California's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 29. Rage's plans beyond this show are unknown.

Audioslave formed in 2001, a year after Rage broke up, and recorded three studio albums. In May 2005, it became the first American band to play an outdoor show in Cuba.

Its most recent album, "Revelations," has sold a disappointing 409,000 copies in the United States since its September 2006 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its self-titled 2002 debut sold 3.1 million copies, and the 2005 follow-up "Out of Exile" 1.1 million.

Amid rumors last August that Audioslave had broken up, Cornell told Reuters that the band was like a sociology experiment because of the various members' complex relationships with each other. He indicated that a solo existence could be a less stressful option.

"I think the biggest problem with people surviving in a band and getting along and appreciating each other is just the fact that for the most part musicians aren't the kind of people who concentrate or worry about what the other guy thinks," he said.

"Carry On," produced by Steve Lillywhite (U2, Rolling Stones), marks Cornell's first solo release since 1999's "Euphoria Morning," which came out two years after Soundgarden broke up.

The Interscope Records release will include "You Know My Name," Cornell's main title song for the latest James Bond film "Casino Royale," as well as a cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." Among the brand new tunes are "No Such Thing" and "Poison Eye," both described in the statement as having a "harder edge," and the "redemptive" song "Your Soul Today."

The statement also described Cornell as "acrimonious," which a publicist said was the intended term.

Sad news, there goes my chance of seeing Audioslave in concert

:(

I was just about to start the topic but you beat me by a few seconds.

Coincidentally, I actually listened to Revelations today before I heard the news. The whole RATM Coachella reunion is starting to make sense now. Hopefully, if it's just a one concert reunion, that the remaining three don't pull a Gary Cherone on this one should they search for a new vocalist. ;)

I'm looking forward to his solo album, though. Euphoria Morning is so underrated.

Good. Other than 3 or 4 songs, they sucked ass.

Thank you, Mr. Cornell. I've liked everything you've done up until the last two Audioslave albums. Looking forward to his next album.

Sounds good. I'll take a solo album.

If his solo album is anything like his song for the James Bond movie we're in trouble.

Well, Im one of the few who enjoyed Euphoria Morning. So lets hope its like that.

Soundgarden is one of my favorite bands, and I just want to see Cornell make music. I love the man.

Damn it! I should have seen Audioslave in concert when I had a chance. And here I thought they would last for years.

Although this news isn't surprising, it sure is disappointing. I thought Audioslave's first two albums rocked. Revelations, on the other hand, is a forgettable album, in my opinion.

Seeing as I'm a fan of Chris Cornell, I'm also looking forward to his next solo album. If "You Know My Name" is any indication of what the album will be like, then it should be a solid piece of work.

As for Morello, Commerford, and Wilk, I pray they and Zack de la Rocha decide to continue making music as Rage Against the Machine once again after the Coachella concert. The chances of this happening seem slim, but it would be so awesome if it happened.

I keep hearing people bashing that song, but I love it.

As much as I agree with your comment, I'm still glad they used the song because it was during ROYALE's opening credits that I really started to get pumped for the film.

I only ever liked Audioslaves first few singles. As a matter of fact I don't think I ever heard anything from their 2nd and 3rd album on the radio.

I love Chris Cornell and this is sad news. If it means that Rage is getting back together and Cornell is happier with his solo gig, I guess I am all for it.

This was pretty disappointing to me. And I'm not a Rage fan at all. But whatever makes them all happy.

Wow, this has to be the first thing you've posted on these boards that I've agreed with you on.

GREAT NEWS.

Their first album was good (but not great), second had a few good songs and a bunch of "meh" songs, and I haven`t even bothered with the third.

Maybe the two old bands will get back together now.

If this means Rage is already kind of back together then I hope to God that there's a possibility Cornell somehow gets Soundgarden back together.

That would be all kinds of awesome.

Shouldn't you research things before you post them? I've met him and he's actually one of the nicest people in the biz, which is even more surprising, because he could be an asshole with all the fame he's worked for. And the only reason Cornell would quit a band (Soundgarden, Audioslave) is if he thought there was nothing else worth doing. He shares my mindset in that yes, you can put out more records and coast along on a band's name value, because they used to write good records, but what's the point?

I personally thought he gave a very decent reply, stating his own opinion. I'm fairly sure he meant no harm. Now, lets just leave it.

....

I actually didn't mind the song he did for Casino Royale. I'm interested in hearing more of his solo stuff.

This shit really fuckin' pissed me off when I first heard about it... Just really fucking disappointing, as Audioslave was one of my favourite bands! I liked Soundgarden and I thought RAGE was alright... But both bands sucked shit when compared to the awesomeness that was Audioslave....

I honestly could care less about Cornell's solo albums/work/future projects, or about RAGE's reformation... They're just not the same seperated, as they were when they were together....

I loved all 3 Audioslave albums, and it sucks cuz I never got to see them live either... I guess my Audioslave in Cuba DVD will be the next best thing. Ah well. :o

*ppssstttt. I think he's the only one.*

I think Soundgarden was the best out of the three. I like the way they progressed through their albums. RAGE would be next, but they got progressively worse with each album with their last kinda sucking hard. Audioslave brings up the rear. Decent singles and that's about it.
