And boy did both bands blow me away. The Black Angels hit the stage at the ABC in Glasgow about 8pm and tore through half a dozen songs from their brilliant debut album Passover. They overcame an unfortunate lack of charisma and some technical gremlins that had them soldiering on through their penultimate number despite no sound eminating from the speakers and still managed to impress. The lead singer looks like a redneck Liam Gallagher with his checked shirt and baseball cap pulled down so far that the top half of his face is in shadow for the majority of their performance. The tambourine in his hand only enfoced the resemblence to Noel's younger brother. All in all they provided a great start to the evening.

An evening that only got better as The Black Keys took to the stage and proceeded to unleash some of the filthiest blues riffs i've heard in quite some time (or at least since I discovered Seasick Steve). I'm not terribly familiar with The Black Keys. I've heard the albums a couple of times and noted their resemblence to early White Stripes but never really gave them more than a cursory listen. But their performance last night was blistering in it's intensity. The guitar howled and raged while the drums did their level best to level the house. The only slight complaint I have is that they didn't play for much more than an hour. But that's not really a complaint at all given how good a time I had and I feel a bit mean even mentioning it. I hope The Black Keys come back to Glasgow again soon. When they do i'll be there.
