Natalie Portman Overrated?

I'm sure I'll take some heat for this, but it's my opinion that Natalie Portman is way overrated and I'm just wondering who would agree? Yes, she's a cute little hottie, and she went or goes to Harvard, but her performances aren't that good. What's all the fuss about V for Vendetta? Oh wow she shaved her head, big whoop! What about that performance in Garden State, adorable, but playing a cute mildley retarded girl is a role she could have waltzed through with ease. All due respect Natalie.
Guys just love her image....it's the image! Frankly I don't know what girls think about her, but I doubt it's the same blind devotion that most of my male freinds have.

She wasn't retarded in any way in Garden State. She was just a little kooky. Nevertheless, she added some flare to the movie and gave the movie one of the many interesting characters throughout. And I want to throw in her debut performance in The Professional. She was awesome in that movie, and since she was like 12 at the time, I don't think male audiences fell in love with her appearance (just the pedophiles). I gotta disagree with you; I think she improves any movie she's in . . . and yes, she is a hottie.

(And I don't see what her going to Harvard has to do with anything movie-related.)

While I think she is talented and very beautifull I still feel that she is over rated in both camps a little.

She was sensational in Leon. I doubt she will reach those levels again. She was very good in V. Apart from that I haven't seen anything mind blowing from her in terms of acting. I'm not saying she's not good either. She gave a decent performance in Closer but that was over rated because of what she had to do in some of her scenes. But I still feel on times people are just a little to quick with the praise.

Good actress? Definitley.

Brilliant? Not for me.

She simply has more class than most of the actresses in Hollywood today. She is also very intelligent, usually picks her roles well, and, yes, she is breathtakingly gorgeous. In my opinion, these are facts that cannot even be argued!

BTW, I think SJ (as hot as she is) is overrated as an actress and would fail in her limited range in a challenging role like Red Eye. Rachel has got WAY more range. SJ was horrible in The Island and sounded like Tara Reid on crack. Checkmate. :p

I think you just lowered yourself by basing an opinion on the number of times he's posted a comment and whether or not he can spell or type. At least he gave opinions on Portman's movies and performances. Right now, his argument is stronger than yours.

Ok I'll argue it then, as prementioned Leon is one of the more fantastic performances of any actors career. Its a powerful performance by a then very young Portman, Throw out the star wars movies which are hard to act in because of the really bad dialogue (legenday actor Alec Guiness always lamented over this when he played Kenobi) and her career is littered with really good to great roles.

Beautiful Girls, Closer, Where the Heart is, Heat and even Garden State while not a oscar worthy type of performance is the reason why fanboys love her. She pulled off the kooky, cute girl next door kind of performance to perfection. And then is able to switch to more pofound movies like Closer.

I think it's funny when people say that her best performance was in the Professional, a time when she didn't have nearly the experience she has now. I'm sorry powersauce but I just don't see it. As well, the fact that Diane Keaton said she was great means nothing to me since I think Diane is one of the most overrated actresses of all-time. Maybe if she'd take off her friggin' sunglasses and take on an original role, maybe I'd have more respect for her.

Don't get me wrong, I like Rachel a lot and she does have talent. However, there is no way that she's the next Meryl Streep, no way! I'd say that she is on the same level for acting talent as Scarlett. I don't think Scarlett is a good actress either.

She is one of the top young American actresses out there. More so because of the roles that are offered to her first. Is she as good as Kate Winslet? No. Does she have as much range as a young Angelica Huston, Toni Collette, Meryl Streep... not yet at least.

She's a great actress, it's such a pity most people think of her and star wars...any other work she's done shows how great she can be. But as for her looks, i think i'm one of the few who find her very, very average (not a bad thing, but people rave on about her looks so much, i just don't see what's so special).

I agree with you on her looks. People always say celebrities are so hot. If they were never celebrities and were seen on the street they would just be considered just ok looking. Being a celebrity changes peoples opinions on them and they are considered very pretty when they aren't at all.

I think her performances speak for themselves. Garden State she was brilliant opposite Zac Braff. Then her performances in V for Vendetta and Closer were also very good roles portrayed by Natalie. Finally in my opinion her acting in The Other Bolelyn Girl was brilliant.

She is a terrible actress. I don't care what anyone thinks of me for saying so. Shes flat on every delivery and when she isn't it's painfully over reactive.

The younglings line in Episode 3 was the worst acting out of any Star Wars film, bar none. Worse than anything Hayden or Jake Loyyd ever did. I don't care if the its bad writing, Carrie Fischer acted her way out of terrible writing.

As a person, shes also comes off as a bit vain too. I just never liker her...

I think it's safe to say Natalie had her greatest performance in Black Swan, she was brilliant. I actually re watched Leon last night, and she was amazing at 12 in that...I think as long as she takes some serious roles, not the cheesy comedic romances we will see her true talent

In 2007 she was overrated. Black Swan is her best performance. Before that it was Leon.

She's classically beautiful, fiercely intelligent, seemingly very grounded and comes across as genuine, warm, opinionated and sharp in interviews.

She's also a gifted actess...granted she hasn't always chosen the 'right' projects.

I think she's a fantastic young girl and a great role model too.

Bland is what comes to mind when i think of Portman. I haven't seen BS yet so that may change but nothing i have seen her in so far makes me believe she's brilliant.

I don't know, i personally don't think she has that aura, that gravitas, most of the time she's just serviceable as if she can be easily replaced with any other cute actress in any role she has done without a drop in quality.

I did think she was effective in Leon and Closer ( most people do look good playing off of Reno or Owen ) but once again, i feel you could have replaced her with anyone else and it wouldn't have made a difference.

I don't think she elevates the material, she gets the job done as you would expect any competent actor .

I don't know how you cannot like her. She comes off as someone who doesn't take herself seriously, seems grounded and does her job without tabloid incident. Along with this she can do drama and comedy, indie and big budget yet can still maintain integrity few actors can get away with that nowadays. Can she still be like that having 4 movies in a span of 5 months, and not reach overkill? That remains to be seen. As for overrated, nonsense.

I can see where you are coming from. She hasn't done anything WOW, but I did see Black Swan and that, imo, is her WOW movie. She is really good in it.

But I'd like to see her in something where she is a bad guy, or a bitch, or just not sweet as pie like she always is. I didn't see V, so she might of been in that, but I don't plan on seeing it. So something new where she is a little bit devilish and not so likeable might be a good change for her.
